I think this is a great local butcher. The quality and selection of meats far surpasses what you would find at a local grocery store. So far, we have tried to ground meat (beef and turkey), chicken legs, sausage, and bacon. Everything has been full of flavor and super easy to cook. The ground beef we made into this delicious meat sauce that barely needed any spices. The butcher is in a decent sized shop and has all of your major cuts of meat. There is limited seafood as the bread and butter seems to be the pork/beef. There is a good selection of chicken and turkey products as well as some cornish game hens and some duck. The sausages are made in-house with a good variety - italian to maple/blueberry to breakfast to turkey. There is also a good selection of bacon, prosciutto, and other cured meats. Any other speciality meats or cuts should be order 48 hours in advance. The only reason that I hesitate to give this place five stars is because the meat is purchased from larger Alberta distributors. It's hard to verify if the meat is free range/hormone free/etc because they purchase from multiple distributors. When I asked one of the employees where the meat was from, I also got a very curt answer. There didn't seem to be a willingness to go into detail about each specific cut and where it was from. So the moral of my story is that if you are looking for good quality, delicious meat at a reasonable price then the Better Butcher is a far superior option to Safeway, Co-op, etc. If you want to know where all of your meat is coming from and how it lived/died then maybe you should try somewhere else. Or perhaps, you should go in the middle of the day, when they're not super busy and you have the ability to have a more extended conversation regarding the origin of the meat. read more

Up to now this is the only Butcher I go to when I need something special, they have a good selection of fresh and frozen meat related foods and friendly helpful staff. Also if you ask they will try and get any cut of meat you want, I've had Pigs Trotters, Pigs Ears and Pigs Cheeks from these for next to nothing extra in price, although you have to order and wait a few days they still will try and get what you want. To me a good butcher is a place where you walk in, ask for a cut of meat, and he goes into the cold storage brings out a chunk and cuts off a piece of the cut you want. This place doesn't seem to work this way. I wanted beef short ribs cut flanken style. Well he had cut up all the ribs English style and packaged them and put them in a cooler for self serve. I would need to give him 2 days notice to get the cut I wanted. To me that is chain store mentality, not a butcher. The meat seems to be all cut and out. That's a supermarket. Now people seem to like it because all the meat is antibiotic free. But he no longer carries grass finished beef, he said. I have never tried the meat so I cannot comment on it. He says it is aged 30 days on site but he can't cut me my ribs without 2 days notice. Why? He doesn't want to give me 29 day aged meat? I've been there 3 times and each time failed to get the meat I wanted. No this is not a Better Butcher, it is a supermarket and I'm sorry we don't have the cut of meat you want today. read more

I loooove this place. Not only because they use hormone free meats, but it is way cheaper than other butcher/grocery stores with organic meat Ive been to. Its a tiny store, but they have all the basics ( chicken, beef and pork) along with some fish, and game meats, perogie. They have amazing sausages...which come in smaller prepacked quantities, which I like because I typically cook for one. They even have beef bacon. Its a little chewier and saltier than the average stuff, but for those who dont want to eat pork its delicious. This is definately my new go to for meat. read more

When I heard that the supposed-trustworthy chain supermarkets are pumping saline solution into chicken and other meat products to add plumpness and retain shelf freshness, I decided on a little inconvenience and start buying most meat products only from highly-reputable real butcher shops in the city. Hence, as I know M&M as a former employee, and Urban Butcher to be of the same stamp, who build in shortcuts and don't have an active qualified butcher onsite, I found The Better Butcher. After pointedly talking to the Randy (owner) and his staff, I decided to order 30 bone-in chicken thighs for a big pot of specialty Indian curry, and didn't regret it. Curious thing, as I de-skinned them, I thought, 'how small these thighs are.' But when organic chickens are free range and not pumped with chemicals and salt, little wonder. A few months later I did it again, and same results. We thoroughly enjoyed those thighs for flavour and texture, as we no longer had a hard time cutting into stiff bloated meat. Along the way, we've purchased hand-made sausages, beef and pork cuts, and all were great. And more recently (June 2018), I bought a 1.5" thick T-bone bordering on porterhouse with a large chunk of tenderloin, and ensuring that it was seared properly on all sides in butter to a great-looking medium rare, with fried onions, mushrooms and whole garlic cloves on the side, yummy! Tender, delicious, amazing! Next time some buttered fried zucchini will join the chorus... Have since returned for many more thick steaks: their rib eye and prime rib are on a par with the best but, if marbled enough, I think their large porterhouse is the best! And I think the bone-in adds flavour. And what else is cool about a local butcher shop is that when we want to special-order anything, all you gotta do is ask. It's a bad thing when we no longer can trust the grocery giants, but it's the truth. Pays to have a friend who works in the meat department of one of them who over time has led me to very few better buys: overall, I am somewhat spooked because the tricks they play on the public are nothing new, and likely getting worse. Oh sure, they will label things with the latest fad, but I think that their big injections of dishonesty is deplorable! Are we headed toward what the 3rd world does with meat in their grocery chains??? But ... What I consider a serious downside happened 2x at TBB: some months ago one batch of skin-on chicken came with an overlarge amount of thick fatty skin tucked under the meaty part of the thighs. Of course this adds to the overall weight, and if enough, will possibly cost consumers up to $10 or more on just one order (for 20-30 pieces, $35-45). I talked to them about it and the next couple of 20-25 piece orders were okay, but on the latest they did it again. In fact, as I was de-skinning one piece, there was easily as much tucked-under skin and fat as meat! I don't know about you, but one request for less weighty waste - another form of cheating - should be enough: in all fairness to readers, I've downgraded TBB from 5 stars to 4 (fall 2018). As well, they vaguely told me that their supplier is doing this or that, but TBB shrink-wraps and seals their own branded packages! Hmmm... As so far they seem pretty good also, I'll check Calgary Meats and Deli on Edmonton Trail south of the TransCanada again soon, and see what they do with large chicken orders... Nonetheless, for smaller orders check out the committed friendly staff at The Better Butcher, and mostly be pleasantly rewarded...? read more

I get frustrated fast with inconsistent meat at butcher shops, but these guys ALWAYS have beautiful meat at great prices. However if I ask or order in advance they have never failed to find what I need (though I have not asked for goat yet) from meat for the smoker to beautiful cuts for a dinner party. This is the best butcher shop I've ever been to. The selection is huge and everything is fresh. I like my beef rare, almost blue so I can't afford to take a chance on meat that may not be the best in its class. If they don't have it, they will bring it in for you. The free range turkeys that are brought in for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter are always excellent. Everybody leaves our home raving about the meat. read more

I have been going to this butcher shop off and on for 5 years as it is the closes one to me. The products are good and place is clean. Every time i ask about hormone free and no anti biotics they tell me all there meats are fee from those. That means chicken , pork , lamb and beef. When I ask them where , what farm , they never say directly or give some vague answer like from a number of different suppliers. That is not what I want to here as second to none meats tells me what farms for poultry, pork. They tell me how long beef is on grass and on grain (last 4 weeks) . They answer exactly the question i want. My latest Better Butcher bad experience was I bought three pounds of lean beef fresh from counter cooler. It was individually wrapped in brown paper oh how convenient I thought till I got it home and opened it next day. It did not have any blood (juice) in it as it was white and grey in some spots. I have had hamburger for 40 years and it smelled fine and I used it . It was the look of it.There are a number of reasons this happens but easiest is the ground stay in grinding container to long till wrapped and juices drains to bottom leaving meat the way I got it. I perfer my beef with normal amount of juice and was not happy with tactic. I will give them another chance just not soon. read more
