My friends and I were looking for rooftop bars in London and this spot popped up on a list. While it's just a one story rooftop bar, so it' doesn't have much of a view, it is some decent outside space above a very large bar. Still, since it was during a London heatwave and the world cup, we opted to sit in the main bar area. Also, like most London bars, there's no service upstairs on the roof...so you still have to order at the downstairs bar anyway. We got some beers and ordered the chicken tenders which were so good. The bar was comfortable, though loud (even though it wasn't too crowded), with lots of screens for watching the world cup. The bathrooms were also pretty good with lots of stalls. Wow. What a great little (actually big) spot! My friend Lauren had told me about this place 2 years ago and we decided to settle on it for our joint birthday party (yey). I email in and was easily able to reserve an area for 30 people. On arrival we were given the large area with a low ceiling to the right of the bar. It was perfect. The winning points to this place are it's large wrap around bar, huge dance floor, a decent amount of seating across three levels AND a mah-ussive beer garden. The beer garden will be awesome in summer and they do take reservations for it. NOTED. We grabbed a quick bite before everyone arrived. I opted for the £5 hot dog and some fries. For £5 the hot dog was good - a lovely, large bratwurst with plenty of ketchup and mustard and a soft bun. Bingo. The chips were good too - hot and perfectly salted. Quick, easy and cheap. I was happy. Then the night really commenced! Our guests began to arrive and everyone was happy with the area. The music was great, the only downside was that he kept mixing the songs. Sometimes we want to listen to a song all the way through you know. Never cut Bieber short! Lastly, the drink costs. £7.50 for a double absolute vodka and blackcurrent - I won't lie, it hurt every time I pulled our my cash card but that's me being Northern, and I guess these are London prices. We had a great night! We stayed until 3am and even that was too early. One last note, the bouncer on the door was lovely. We had a few really good chats. A-OK! This place got a lovely roof to chill at in a nice warm sunny day, or night. Also quite spacious in general. Been here for breakfast and happy hour. The breakfast food I've/ and my friends, have tried here are greek yogurt with granolas and berries- not exactly worth it, full english breakfast- which is quite big, some pastries- croissants and muffins, and continental style- which isn't worth it either. Nothing special really, although they do provide wifi here. Happy hour is good for shots and other kinds of cocktails. PS! Their sweet potato fries are yummy for the tummy! read more

The Big Chill House gets all the stars from me because it is where I host the monthly event London Vegan Drinks. Oh yes. Come upstairs at 257-259 Pentonville Road on the third Thursday of any month and you will find over 100 vegans and their friends drinking, eating and meeting without meat. The venue is full of character and the staff members are courteous and accommodating. Lovely range of bottled beers and ciders. *UPDATE* London Vegan Drinks doesn't take place here any longer. Decent bar- located in a cool area near Kings Cross. We walked by and saw the big screen for the rugby but this is anything but a Sports bar. I think the best description is trendy hipster?! It's a good size with a lot of standing room and some table options. They do serve food which looked better than the normal pub food you might get elsewhere. Staff were friendly. The draft beers were pretty limited which was annoying but hey what can you do. Once the game was over... loud music came on and made it quit hard to have a conversation. Like everything else associated with Big Chill, The Big Chill House aims to provide relaxation musically, physically and spiritually. Located only a short walk away from King's Cross tube station The Big Chill House isn't as large as you might expect but, depending on when you go, this can make the place feel nice and intimate. Soothing lighting and uber comfy sofas really help you to unwind. The drinks unsurprisingly are a little expensive but are of good quality and good variety. The best aspect of this club is undoubtedly the music. Every night you are pretty much guaranteed to here something a little different and I have never been dissapointed by what was on offer. Unlike other music venues I feel as if I could come here regardless of my mood. read more

The Big Chill House is the mother bar of the Big Chill label. Although I have found myself to be more than intrigued by the interior decoration of the bar, I have always felt a little uneasy about this place every time I have ventured here. It is perhaps because I am still a bit young for it? I have always felt that 'chill out' music is usually loved by the over-30s, but do correct me if I am wrong! It is located right next to King's Cross station which is very handy and easy to get to. It has 3 floors, of which its best highlights include: the amazing south-facing roof terrace, the bean bags, a carbon fibre bar-top, vintage fold-out cinema chairs and a cosy Norwegian-themed room downstairs with a fake fire, a log cabin and seats that resemble beds more than anything else. It is clear that a lot of time and money has been spent on the interior of this bar. Other than that, it often organizes gig nights - usually not to my taste - and special Djs are often invited in to play. The food looks good, but is overpriced just as the drinks are. I guess it is worth a look, but I would not willingly spend a whole evening here. read more

Summer = rooftop, but London also equals Rain. But that did not dampen Isabel and I's spirit. Also, maybe I'm so used to city types because I work there, this place is not city at all, it's buzzing with media and fashion types which isn't a surprising as its so close to Shoreditch and Islington. I felt a bit out of place in my city girl heels and pencil skirt because everyone is super casual. Anyways, the bar itself on the rooftop is super tiny and seems to run out of supplies pretty fast and only one person is serving so if you can, you should get drinks downstairs first. Downstairs is massive, but I assume it doesn't really get lively til late and we were there for after work rooftop drinks- it's a bit sticky, and it's cheap, and a bit student so go with an open mind. I did walk past their drawing room and that looks super cosy but again, it was pretty empty when we went. You have to try their coconut and lime cider, it's like a lighter Malibu cocktail! The views: uh, not the best views in the city for sure, but you're there for cheap drinks and a makeshift rooftop tiki bar. Solid 3 stars. read more

For a group of students living in the Kings Cross area, the Big Chill House has become the perfect bar and our backup plan if everything else fails. The crowd is pretty laid back and full of people of all age groups and ethnicities which always ensures an interesting night. On Thursdays through Saturdays there is a dj playing a good mix of music and the dance floor is always full. It was a tad chilly when I was there but it was worth toughing it out. Downstairs met most items on my checklist for an unpleasant experiences. Ears bleeding? Check. Can't move? Check. Wallet empty after a couple of drinks? Check. I guess some people might suggest that it's because of my age that I can no longer enjoy umph umph umph umph music and shouting at my friends to make myself heard but I never really enjoyed this kind of place. The Big Chill is an amazing laid-back friendly festival,and I was delighted when I heard it was opening a bar and club in London. I'm not sure what i imagined but it certainly wasn't this. It's a strange mish-mash of themes - there's a log-cabin-themed area downstairs complete with fake fires on screen, a Love Inn upstairs with leather pods to lounge in, and a roof terrace up top. The latter has a few great areas for groups, but is ruined by some incredibly uncomfortable benches and badly thought-out arrangement. I've been here for a couple of nights out and neither was amazing - the strange mix of styles leaves you feeling a bit lost and uncomfortable, and I wasn't a fan of the music either. If a funk/chill-out is your style though you might be onto a winner. My best visit was during the day, when the downstairs is more like a pub and does much better for it. The food is also terribly over-priced and you don't get much for your money. However, I did order an Irish Coffee here once, and the effort and time that went into it was amazing, and the taste matched, so I'd recommend the place for cocktails. read more

Some friends and I stumbled across The Big Chill House when wandering around Kings Cross looking for a bar before a gig and we were pleasantly surprised. The drinks were your average London prices, around £5 for a pint, but i a cool venue like this I didn't mind so much! We headed up to the roof terrace which was packed, so we wandered back inside and found the games room which was empty! Yes, it was totally epic, and I suck a table football! The decor was awesome and for being a warm day was very well air conditioned! We spent a good hour playing games and drinking before we had to leave, I'd of willing spent all night there! I wish I could give this place 2.5 stars, because there's nothing exactly wrong with it, but "Meh. I've experienced better" pretty accurately sums up my sentiments towards this place. First, I should mention that I came here strictly for food on a Sunday evening, so my review may not speak to what you're looking for. I often pass the Big Chill on the way to school and wanted to give it a try. It's a roomy place, well-decorated, and a nice place to chat with your friends. The bartender (you have to walk up to the bar to order your food) was very sweet. The food, however, was very...meh. My friend and I shared the crab burger and the broccoli. The presentation of the food was great, and I really liked their fries, but the burger itself was lackluster, and the broccoli was nothing to squack about. In short, I think this place would be great if it had better food. As things stand, I don't think I would come back to eat here. read more

The sun was out on the vertical seedling roof garden and only a smattering of pollution and fags clouding my view between me and the flock of ripe young hot stuff trotting about in canvas espadrilles, I was reassured I'd have a chill time. I feel like I shouldn't like this place, but I really do. Why shouldn't I like it? The name, truly a terrible name, and the exterior of the building makes it look like it's a hostel for Australians. But inside it's quite nice, roomy for friends to meet and the very best part is the roof terrace. We popped up to watch a film in their rooftop cinema and stopped off to have a drink at the bar. It's not a huge space but there's plenty of seating and they serve food and drink to your table. Pretty handy if you're kinda lazy, which I'm not, of course. Check out their weekly rooftop screenings of classic movies, it cost £3 and included the movie, a cocktail and some popcorn. They'll also deliver food and drinks to you during the movie. read more

I was expecting a lot more from The Big Chill House to be honest. It has some fantastic PR and when I pitched up here I really thought that I was going to have a good time.... Perhaps it was the time that my friends and I turned up - 2.30am on a weekend night. Now, I would have thought that this was a perfectly acceptable time to pitch up for a reasonably big club like this, but it felt like everyone was closing up and going home! I bet you all know this feeling, when the barmen look like they would rather be tucked up in bed (I can't blame them), and the comfy lounging sofas are doubling up as beds for all the tired customers. The place was also half empty, which didn't help the cause much. Our group decided to see if there was anywhere in the club which had more going on, but were slightly disappointed to find that it was also smaller then we expected. We stayed around on the dance floor for a bit before calling it a night. I think for the sake of fair and even journalism I should come back and give it a shot at a less ungodly hour. read more

I think Gry was overly harsh with her 3/5! I know the drinks selection isn't perfect, but the Aspinal's Suffolk cider is eminently drinkable on a summer's afternoon. It's like a maze in here. Lots of small balcony areas with cushions on the floor, big central dancefloor and bar, upstairs club and roof terrace too. The food isn't bad either. The best thing about the big chill house (showing its festival roots) though, is the music. I've been to an all day sunday band session, several great club nights and seen coldcut live - which was one of my best nights out ever! We had a very weird night here a few weeks ago, it was a Sunday night and the next day was a bank holiday so they had some kind of night on. We got there about 8 ish and were the only people in the place for about 2 hours but the music was still turned up full, so we needed to shout in each others ears even though we were sat next to each other on the sofa. Big Chill House is exactly what the name says it is. After coming here for the first time on a Thursday after work I found it to be the perfect sanctuary for meeting up with friends which was what most people seemed to be doing there. I found this place after searching on Google bars with free WiFi. So I called them to to enquire if this was really true and it was. The drinks are fairly cheap (for London), good vibes, decor a bit funky and the staff were quite friendly. I booked a table and turned up a little early but got my table pretty much straight away. Feeling a bit pecking I ordered a burger. It was a blue cheese, caramelised onion and button mushrooms beef burger in a brioche bun. It was alright, not quite a good as it sounded on paper though. Plus it took quite a while to arrive at my table at which point I was getting impatient and wasting away over there. I absolutely adore the Big Chill House in Kings Crossand not just because it's close by to where i live, though that helps. During the week and early weekends the main bar area is free. It is a wide a space with a mezzanine area whichcan be booked for parties. At weekends the rest of the venue opens up with an upstairs bar, a heated outdoor area and some seating sections downstairs in the basement. As the main area is already quite big it means that the place can really attract the crowds and have a good time. The bar area is large, the staff are excellent, as are their range of drinks and cocktails. Service is quite fast and entrance after 9pm at weekends is not too expensive. That the venue is situated right by the tube makes it a great place to have a party or meet a large crowd without worrying about travelling home. read more

Bouncers can be a bit full on too. Otherwise a great venue that's always been doing a really interesting mix of music (much more eclectic than most places) and arts with regular comedy nights. This is a sort of large pub vibe, but with a sort of dance floor. Felt a bit like a student's union, but not particulairly in a bad way. Music was not bad, and the drinks were standard. Good beer garden / smoking terrace on the roof. Free before 10pm, so get there early! One of the better bars in the Kings X area; id fully recommend it for all you students living around there. read more

To be fair I had a few too many drinks before I came here a couple of weeks ago on a Friday! There was a small queue of about 5 people to get in which didn't take long and your hand is stamped as you go in so you don't have to worry about not being able to get back in. I think it was £5.00 to get in and we got there at about 1 am so it's pretty cheap. Once we got in we only had to wait about 5 mins to get served, not too sure how much the drinks were though - I had gone past caring by that point. As I had never been there before myself and my boyfriend and I decided to go and explore! We walked around the different levels and rooms, unfortunately excluding the terrace as you can't take drinks there! It was a really nice place, we had a few drinks, did a bit of dancing, had a chat and met some great new people. The Big Chill House is a good place to meet in Kings Cross, as it is very close to the station. It is very spacious with three floors, and is always open late. It has got a bit of a reputation amongst people who like a quieter night as it can get extremely busy and rowdy on a weekend, especially later on, but in general the atmosphere is good. A redeeming feature is the first class music they put on, often for free on a sunday afternoon. Lots of the stars of the modern folk scene play sets, the DJs are fantastic and it can feel like a cool festival once you turn your back on the view of pentonville road! My preference is to check out the music, but if you like your night busy, loud and manic, then friday is for you! read more
