I first took my old Trek to a pro bike shop to try to get it back on the road (it had 2 flat tires & had been sitting covered on an outdoor patio for 2 years or so). The pro shop quoted $600-$700 which was more than I originally paid for the bike & basically said it wasn't worth it to repair... like, what?!?! Thankfully, I discovered The Bikery. Super knowledgeable & friendly staff who got my old bike ready to ride again (basic tune-up, straightened back tire, replaced inner tube with one that I already had, new chain & brakes) for ~$176. I went to Cycles of Change for a broken spoke. There was a bit of a wait because they were understaffed at the time. And the initial person I spoke with was not very knowledgeable. She initially told me they did not have a new wheel that would fit my bike, but in the end I was able to speak to the mechanic who set her straight and showed me a bunch of workable wheels. The mechanic knew her stuff. And did the wheel change in approximately 30 minutes while I waited. She had told me the cost prior to the repair to get approval. When I was run up, the cost was exactly $10 higher. I just let it go. Parking was obtainable within 1 block. Its a little bit of dicey area, so I wouldn't walk around too much or leave your car for too long. Overall, a decent small repair shop. read more

Love San, Carolina and Mario! They were so welcoming and easy to talk to. I felt safe and comfortable in their presence and loved that they didn't judge me for my lack of knowledge on bikes. Before coming into the shop I called and San was informative and patient with all the questions that I asked. Upon arrival, they made sure that only a limited amount of customers could be inside so that we could take pandemic precautions. Both Carolina and San took their time to ensure that I was getting the supplies I needed and gave my bike the love it deserved. During maintenance it felt like I was just talking to friends! Oh my goodness, what a hidden gem. I was looking for a front wheel for my kid's bike (he left it locked poorly overnight). This was the only place that carefully looked at photos of the bike, looked to see if they had a tire (bike is vintage) and they quoted a fair price. I came is with my full suspension Ripmo AF. I wanted to swap seat post droppers. It was a trial and error masterpiece, but Dart was able to figure it out and same me home the same day. Other shops refused to work on it, while Dart said let's take a look. This is easily my favorite bike shop ever. Great prices, great, quick service. Great neighborhood spot with good, quick service, reasonable prices. Took my bike in on Friday for a tune up and to help secure the back rack and basket on my road bike. They asked to make sure it was okay if they just did what they thought the bike needed. I told em it was cool as long as they stayed close to my budget. Told me they could probably have it done Tuesday. Got a call it was done on Monday. Did a bunch of great work. Replaced cables, brake pads, detailer, chain. I rode the bike away and felt very solid and smooth. Definitely recommend this place and will be returning for sure. read more

These guys were leading a bicycling education event for a middle school (Bret Harte) on my street today: three adults leading an orderly line of about thirty middle schoolers biking around local streets (I talked to one of the leaders briefly, which is how I knew it was Cycles of Change). It was an impressive sight, and also got me wondering why I've never seen kids being taught bike skills before. I mean, everyone does drivers' ed, but nobody ever taught me biker's ed; I had to figure that all out on my own. Anyway, respect to Cycles of Change for teaching bike skills to kids and introducing the next generation of cyclists. It's a hard task in a city with limited bike infrastructure like Oakland, but they seemed to be doing a good job of it from what I could see. read more

I'm so thrilled about the bike I recently purchased at The Bikery. I certainly got lucky w/ this one. Once i picked out the bike i wanted from their entirely donated selection, it received meticulous care and fine tuning from a few different skilled staff members. The price I paid was exceptionally reasonable, if not downright low for the quality machine I obtained. Everyone at this excellent community resource is warm and friendly from the staff to the interns. You definitely won't get the hasty sales push that you will get at many bike shops. I know a couple of the staff personally and greatly admire their convictions about what they are trying to creating with the Bikery. I rolled in here on a Thursday after riding right past it (bit hard to notice) to volunteer my services as a mechanic. The staffed volunteers there were SO friendly and so happy that I was there to help. Genuinely good people with good hearts; people who want to see change in their community and the world. The shop is not very stocked though: they don't have all the tools you'd need or the parts but if you come in there they will absolutely try their best and do whatever they can to help you. i had a great experience here! i recently purchased a used bike and brought it here for a tune up. one cool thing they do is allow you to authorize repairs under a certain amount. in my case i asked for a tune up, flat repair, and anything else that needed to be done under $200. i'm really pleased with the repairs, but even more happy with how i was treated. when i picked up the bike i needed to fit it in the back of my trunk, and one of the folks from the bikery spent about 15 minutes showing me how to take off the front wheel and put it back on in order to fit it in my car. they took the time to speak with me, educate me, and made sure i was confident with how to put the wheel back on before sending me off. lovely people!! read more

Very limited selection, but I was nonetheless offered to test ride and choose from two different bikes that fit my needs and stature. Lent me a helmet to test ride, watched my bag... attached a kickstand and rack while I waited and noshed on some yummy veggie lasagna made by an intern. So I went to the bikery again today to get my tire tubes fixed because I ran over a pothole and they popped :/ But when I got there I was greeted with the same professionalism as I had experienced on my first visit. I'm new to bikes - well, it's been a few years - and just bought one that was build out of box. I'm handy, so I did okay with it, but had no idea what to do with the brakes, and wanted someone to check my work and help me put on the headlight which I had no clear instructions for. I found The Bikery on yelp and realized it was only a few blocks away so I walked myself and my bike down and asked if they could help me out. San was *super* helpful, squared away my brakes and light, checked over my work and made a couple of adjustments, and got me set with the lock and helmet that I also needed. Both the service and goods were super affordable, the shop was a great atmosphere, and it was really great to hear about the community projects they run as well! I'll definitely come back when I need anything bike-related - they're so professional and friendly and I'm glad it was so easy to find someone nearby who could help me out! read more
