This long overdue post is to sing the praises of the Oakland Bike Station. Aside from the obvious convenience and safety of having your bike serviced where it's parked (for free) all day, while you are at work - they do really great work! Perhaps because Bike Stations in the Bay Area are sponsored/subsidized by BART - it seems like it's about supporting a community, rather than making a bunch of $$, and it never feels like you are getting hustled, gouged or upsold. The people that work there seem to like the job and the customer service is excellent. I want to especially call out the amazing work that Bike Station mechanic Daniel did on my ride a couple of months ago. It's an early 80's Univega mountain bike that was Frankensteined into a city cruiser and I needed a complete overhaul from new handle bars and cork grips, to a complete drive train replacement (that found me at least two extra gears). I cannot thank him enough for extra effort he gave to the project, and how happy I am with the results. The great communication skills and excellent craftsmanship I experienced from Daniel was typical of other service work I have gotten in the past at Oakland Bike Station. It's important to note that this is a bike service center not a bike sales or bike part sales center. They usually have the basic parts on hand necessary to get the job done but you may need to source specialty, uncommon, or vintage parts yourself or wait for them to be ordered before certain projects can be done. I dropped my bike off in the morning for a full tune up, new brake pads, cables & housings, and it was ready by quitting time. They even fixed my rear derailleur which I had thought was beyond hope. Free valet bike parking! Yes, that's right, FREE. I have used this service for the past two years (but don't anymore because I don't have to commute to SF anymore) Bike station was one of the best parts of my day. Just the fact that I could leave my bike for safe keeping with a valet for free made my day. The people that work here are incredibly nice. They are super friendly, helpful if you have any bike questions, AND they remember everyone's bike. Seriously, they would see me coming from across the street and have my bike waiting for me. Wow! What amazing service. They are also a bike shop if you need a tune-up or any other work done. There is also a record shop and vintage clothing store attached. In the morning, there is the cutest little black dog too. I love this place so much. Note, it does tend to fill up by 9AM. The first time you go, you need to fill out a waiver. And if you leave your bike overnight, it will cost you $5. read more

Best Customer service and Bike Mechanics in town!! Not only that but they're location is great for customer who live in west Oakland and need a quick part fixed. Anyways let's get down to my service here, I came in early in the morning with a bad front drive train, frayed wires, wrong shifter and lastly alignments. When I entered there was a gentleman ready to greet me which then is when I told him my issues. Mechanic was only 30 minutes away from entering shift for the day, it was around 11PM, I did my daily routines and when they texted me back it was around 2PM when they've finished, so I call that amazing and fast service and same day, for less than $100 ?! I had gone to this bike shop to fix a broken spoke. The streets of Oakland are pretty brutal and I thought that they could do a good job. But after getting a second smoke replacement and having it snap a few weeks later I went to another bike shop and found out that they had installed the spokes in correctly. They were backwards and hanging over another spoke. After spending nearly $65 on repairs for a problem they created I no longer will be patronizing this establishment. So this is pretty much the coolest thing on the planet. FREE, yes, completely FREE bike parking. I rode my bike down the Oakland 19th Street area and wanted to do dinner. The big question was..... What do I do with my bike? Well, Oakland has solved this problem. Simply drop it off at the Bike Station. Step 1: Roll your bike up to the counter. Step 2: Grab a claim ticket and tear it in half. Step 3: Put your half of the claim ticket somewhere very safe on your person. Step 4: Sign into the parking using their form which just requires the model of your bike and your name. Step 5: Hand it to the guy or gal at the front desk. Step 6: Frolick bikeless in downtown Oakland! My chain was wearing, and it was time for a replacement. The friendly fellow at the desk said no problem - they'd do it while they had it there as well. The pricing was fair. Its this type of service that makes a downtown area of a city so convenient. Awesome place to get a flat tire changed! Got a flat during my morning commute to the ferry a couple months ago. All the other bike repair stores don't open until 10 or 11am!!! The Uptown Bike Station hours are from 7am to 9pm. The staff member working that morning was willing to change my flat on the spot and have the bike ready for me in 15-20 minutes. Since I'm a slacker and take the latest ferry to work, I decided to jump on BART and pick up my bike during my commute home. And the price of the repair was reasonable. I remember another commuting friend taking her bike to another repair shop and not getting it back for two days. Lame. I highly recommend the Uptown Bike Station! read more

What an amazing addition to the area! Free, secure bike parking to 9PM! The guys who work here are not only helpful but super nice. The shop has water in case you run out on your ride... and if any issues arise, they are happy to fix you up. I've been parking my bike here for a while and have had a few fixes as well. I'd like to preface this that I really support local businesses and especially free (tax/toll supported) bike parking. I really liked this place. I've continually had a really bad experience with the man that is there in the mornings. It always feels like any question is a complete inconvenience to him. He's very negative. When I first started going there staff would always give me a ticket. One day I brought in my bike and was waiting for him to give me a ticket as I thought I wasn't supposed to take my own. He just stared at me and said "You know, you can take your own ticket. This place is free, we can't do everything for you". It was really rude, and I genuinely didn't know I was allowed to take my own ticket. Anytime I've had questions he at first acts like he doesn't hear me, then when I ask again he will stare at me and repeat the question as if I've asked something incredibly stupid. It feels really demeaning and insulting. My last experience I had there is I arrived when bike parking was full. I walked in just to double check and he said "yes, that's why the sign is there". I left to go park my bike in a locker at BART and as I was walking back I saw another woman walk out who had just dropped off her bike. I asked her if the parking was full and she said "yeah, but I think he felt bad for me and took the bike". I walked back in to ask him why he took her bike, and his response was that it was "weird" that I would ask her. It seems he prefers to take certain peoples bikes over others. That was the last time I went in. I don't feel comfortable having to interact with him or leaving my bike there anymore. read more

When the uptown location opened in early 2015 it made my daily commute to SF so much better. I have a heavy old bike, so to be able to wheel it in the door on my way to 19th St. BART instead of lugging it down the stairs (or waiting for the slow elevator) into the station was a huge improvement. The staff is friendly, and if you come regularly they know which bike is yours and bring it out before you even give them your ticket. I've also had my bikes serviced here a bunch, and have found Brett and Thomas to be helpful, knowledgeable, and reliable. read more

The customer service is terrible, the guy that works there in the mornings is very rude and I would never reccomend this shop to anyone. He even had the nerve to make negative comments in front of my wife and I because some of the parts on my bike that were having trouble were made from China and he said "thats what you get when you buy cheap" We were shocked! BIKE PARKING: Free, indoor, valet bike parking weekdays from 7am - 9pm. Civilized. Incredible. I'm not the biggest fan of BART. While trains are usually pretty reliable/fast, the commutes are always overcrowded and steamy BUT, this bike station is HUGE in mitigating that! To park here you just roll into the store (no lugging gear up/down stairs in your work clothes). The efficient valets take it from there. BTW, they do run out of space around 9am so be warned! The location is very nice inside & they even have a 7 lbs mutt to help protect your ride. Finally, they sell basic bike supplies & perform maintenance. read more

I got a flat tire from broken glass on my morning commute (thanks to Trump). I was happy with the service I got here. A quick and easy repair, reasonably priced for the downtown location ($18 for tube plus labor). Was so glad to find a place near my work to do this before my ride back home. I was hoping to browse the cycling equipment while I waited but the place is surprisingly stark with a limited selection. The clothing, helmets, bike bags etc. that they did have were all very masculine and not my style. However, a great place to come for the bike valet and bike repair. They are busy during commute times due to the valet service and being right next to bart - for service come in the middle of the day if you can. read more
