The 2014 season started today, and there were about two dozen interesting, local vendors out in force. We picked up some vibrant, organic veggies and fruits from the two crop farms represented there, but there were all other kinds of other interesting tents, too: herbal soaps, local honey, maple syrup, etc.! It's a little pricey, yes, but you're supporting local businesses, and most of the stuff is good for Mother Earth. We arrived about 20 minutes to close, and people were already closing up shop.

I was excited to know that if I miss that one during the week many of the same venders come here with a few other exciting venders too. They make great use of the fairgrounds for the winter market. When you come you can check out a lot of antique tools and machinery used back in the gold ol days. All the venders are happy to educate you on their products and how to use them. You can't beat the ease of ordering online earlier in the week and picking up on Saturday. All of the people working there are so friendly and helpful. The vegies are organic, incredibly fresh, and beautiful! When lettuce was in season I often took a photo of the heads because they were so huge! I also adore the baked goods from the gluten and dairy free bakery. I can't make it out of the parking lot without trying their treats! They're amazing. We are so lucky to have this available to us on the south shore. Give it a try to support our local farmers and businesses.

Tomatoes as red as they were are generally very easy to cut and very juicy. They were good but not the way that summer tomatoes usually are; not really sweet or very juicy. They were more like tomatoes that are shipped where they can't be soft or they'll be damaged. I definitely recommend purchase of his vegetables, though! Everything else was great!! I'll definitely be back even though it's about a 20 minute ride.

Of course, we made it on the last night...Labor Day weekend (Friday), we were able to make it part of a trip to Marshfield so it was great. We made the trip....traffic was not to bad, which was a huge bonus. Upon arrival, we noticed that it was a very busy night at Langwater...tons of cars parked in the front of the farm in an orderly fashion. We were lucky enough to get a spot near the entry and make our way to the Farm. Immediately, we saw two lines....one for pizza and one for drinks (at the bar). The lines moved quickly. The stafff at Langwater has a real great process of getting each order in and moving on to the next customer. Obviously, they have done this before! The pizza that we ordered as "excellent". The wood-fired ovens were roaring and pumping pizza's out quickly! The bartenders at the bar were just as quick. Plenty of help and everyone moving through the drink line was awesome to see. Music was being played with hundreds of families and friends laying around on their blankets and beach chairs, which made everyone happy and the vibe relaxed! I would love to come back here when the farmstand is open and to try some chicken wings and ice cream....which I decided not to try this visit. The Saturday before Thanksgiving was the last day of the outdoor market. It will be closed for a few weeks before the indoor market opens in the Wompatuck State Park Visitors' Center. The winter farmers market runs from January through March and then we look forward to the outdoor market reopening in April. Given our beloved 4-season climate here which is not always conducive to a year-round outdoor market, I feel lucky and pleased to have the indoor winter market solution. Our farmers market has gotten more well-known since I last reviewed it so it tends to be busier and more crowded. It can be annoying to wait in line for things but I am pleased it is thriving, and serving more people with quality produce and other products. Each year seems to bring more offerings of not just local food and food products but some lovely handmade crafts.

There is always some great local musicians playing, and a friendly feel to the crowd. So many great vendors, who have become friends over the years! We especially love the sea salt, the honey, the fresh citrus coolers (half an orange, lemon and lime juices) and all the great produce & flowers. They used to allow dogs, but unfortunately they no longer do. Health reasons, I guess. There are some ready to eat foods, and a few food trucks. But we go for the produce, the community and the knowledge that it's summer on the Vineyard!

The location is convenient and there are restrooms in the Agriculture Hall in case you need to go. I like to wear sneakers because of the grass. You can find it on the corner of Main and High School Road on the lawn of the First Baptist Church. It has maybe a dozen tents, close together so you can visit all of the vendors in a reasonable time. The market is only held on Wednesdays between 2:00 and 6:00. A really nice variety of friendly vendors sell local produce, specialty items, meats, breads and bakery goodies, honey, handmade soaps, etc. We picked up three amazing looking macaroons and a nice gift-pack of cookies.
