Looking for an unusual get-away, we found it with your Boat and Breakfast, complete with a sail on your beautiful classic wooden boat. Moored on the quiet side of Eagle Bay Harbor, it was so peaceful and restful to watch the boats and ferries pass in the distance, the full moon rise over the water, and we could even see the Space Needle from our deck! The boat was our hide-away and so comfortable to return to after exploring Bainbridge Island, the lovely town of Winslow, and walking in the magnificent Grand Forest. Thankfully, our pilot, James, was a jovial fellow with a good command of his craft. A short three minutes later I felt my pucker give way to a state of enrapturement at the Seattle skyline from several hundred feet in the air. There is a certain giddiness that comes from laughing in the face of your own mortality, especially with James on the mike. The time will fly by and before you know it, you'll be descending back to Boeing Field. It's so surprising to realize how little runway this plane needs in order to land. I spent last weekend (10/23/15 - 10/25/15) at Pilgrim Firs. This is such a pretty oasis for a…read moreweekend trip focused on advocacy, leadership, nonprofits, and spirituality. It definitely fits right into the scenic area of the light mountains just west of Seattle. Surrounded by tall fir trees and crisp air, with no reception, it's truly a wonderful escape. I was there with an advocacy group, called RESULTS, and there was a Men's Church Group there on a retreat, as well. This beautiful site includes 120 wooded acres of which 40 have been developed with cabins, lodges and outdoor recreation areas for guest use. The log cabins are designed to hold 10 people. Each cabin is assigned a name (Mathers for example) and number (1-11). There's a little porch on the front. Enter the cabin and there's a medium sized common room with benches, a small table, and a tall shelf. The shelf in our cabin held extra blankets and below it were baskets for laundry upon departure. Each side of the cabin has 3 single beds and a bunk bed, so 10 total beds, and then its own bathroom. Each bathroom has two sinks, a good sized private shower, a toilet, and plenty of space to walk around. Behind the sink are nice wood window sills, with windows that could be wound open, and then a soap dispenser to the side. Each cabin side also has plenty of towels for each person and the beds have clean sheets, blankets, and a pillow on them. The towels could certainly be softer; they're pretty rough, but the blankets and sheets were very soft and comfortable. The bed was surprisingly comfortable! What a quality mattress for a cabin. My only other complaint about the cabins is that the lighting is too rough. It's very bright fluorescent lights on the ceiling. Incorporate some lamps and maybe even softer towels and the cabins would be perfect. There are nice hiking trails all around the cabin and you can hear the sounds of birds rustling through the trees. It's just beautiful. The Madison Lodge is right on Lake Flora. You can rent canoes or kayaks to go explore the lake. We didn't have time for that, but it was so nice to see. During the days, we spent time at the lodge. Breakfast was served from 8am to 9am. Really good breakfast! On the first day it was eggs, pancakes, sausage, and then there was cereal and oatmeal daily. The next day had delicious crispy bacon instead. Lunch was very good: sandwiches one day and burgers the next. Lunch and dinner always had salad and each meal also included a vegetarian option. Quite impressive! Marc managed the front lodge, Madison I believe, and the cooking crews. Really friendly guy and all very nice staff. During the course of the three days we were there, I was without any personal belongings since United had lost all of my stuff. Marc was incredibly kind and accommodating to ensure I had options for communication and brightened our long days with his friendly demeanor and good quality care. In the evening, we enjoyed exploring a little. It's a United Church of Christ location. So, there was a small chapel, but the chapel was more a room of expression with tiles and even chairs decorated to reflect causes, social justice, support of LGBT, inspirational quotes, and more. Next to the little Chapel room there was a phone room with an old red square phone with a long windy cord. Off of the main room there was also an Art/Game room and a Rec room with a ping ping table. We just borrowed some card games from the Art room and really enjoyed those. Great space. I was so glad that RESULTS took advantage of such a fantastic location to remove us from all chaos and just get down to talking about our issues: health, education, and alleviating poverty.

I can say with absolute certainty that if you leave Seattle at 8 AM, you can easily drive to Seal…read moreRock AND BACK, TWICE, before 5 PM! Another pro tip: never forget your tent at home. Even after getting back around 4:30 PM (after we forgot the tent, went home and got back), our awesome site was still there, as were 90 percent of the 41 other campsites. There were a few picnic-ers on the beach, and the tide had just started to come in, but there were plenty of delicious oysters around! This site is relatively close to the highway, so if you're looking for the perfect "middle of nowhere", this isn't it. You can also hear seals splashing around and making noises at night, although I sadly didn't see any during the day. Some other pointers that I had been wondering about but couldn't find any information on anywhere else: - This site is inside the Olympic National Forest, but not inside the Park itself, so you don't have to pay the park entrance fee. - The bathroom nearest the picnic area (and beach-front campsites) is a tiny (and dirty) pit toilet, but there is a really nice (flush-toilet) facility on the campground trail up the hill. - The beach-front campsites don't have a view of the beach, they're just closer to it; there's a path that leads down to the beach access area. - It's $18 per night, per site, and you pay at a small pay area near the beach/picnic area by putting your cash into an envelope and into the mail slot. - NOAA says there are baby seals around (at some point?! summertime??) and to stay away from them! - The fire pits do have attached grills with hinges that can be placed over the fire (but be careful when they're down, they're easy to trip on!). - Most of the sites have a slightly raised platform to place your tent, but it's covered in gravel and stones, so it *hurts* to kneel or lie on so bring sleeping pads! Overall, this campground is awesome! I wish it was quieter and further from Highway 101, but otherwise it's a great site for a short camping trip!

We had a very disappointing experience at Seal Rock Campground…read more Our group of seven arrived around 1:50 p.m. and selected Sites 16 and 17, which appeared unoccupied. There was no reservation ticket or other indication that Site 16 was reserved, so we paid the fees for both sites within 30 minutes of arriving and set up camp. Around 5:30 p.m., another camper arrived and said she had paid for Site 16. She was polite and understood that the situation appeared to be a misunderstanding. Unfortunately, the campground host handled the situation very differently. Despite our explanation that there was no reservation ticket on the site when we arrived, he repeatedly suggested that we had removed the ticket and threatened that we could be banned from Olympic National Forest, despite having no evidence that we had done anything wrong. He also claimed to have been checking the campground and had seen the ticket still on the site, which made us question why he did not address the situation earlier. Rather than objectively investigating the misunderstanding, he appeared determined to assume we were at fault and dismissed our explanation. We felt unfairly judged, disrespected, and treated as dishonest without evidence. I cannot know his intentions, but the interaction left us feeling that we were not treated fairly or with basic respect. Campsite misunderstandings can happen, but they should be handled professionally. The problem was not simply that there was a dispute over the site. It was the host's accusatory, dismissive, and threatening behavior toward our group. Future campers should be aware of this experience and should consider taking photos of their campsite and any reservation or payment notices immediately upon arrival.

Mary and Pete, the hosts, were incredibly sweet and welcoming. Our one-night stay at this beautiful Olympic-area campsite was peaceful, scenic, and well worth the visit. We loved the never-ending water faucet--supposedly the cleanest water around--paired with a gorgeous mountain view. The site came with camping chairs and a fire pit (though we couldn't use the fire pit due to seasonal burn restrictions). We especially enjoyed watching the friendly chickens roam around. Mary mentioned they're about 4 years old and still laying 6-7 eggs per 15 chickens--very impressive! Their eggs ($6/dozen) had deep yellow, vibrant yolks that were clearly organic and fresh. Yes, the chickens can be a little chatty in the morning, but it added to the charm for us. The port-a-potty was far nicer than average thanks to the scents and care Mary and Pete put into maintaining it--truly appreciated! It came stocked with toilet paper, and the water faucet (with a blue handle) was easy enough to operate once you got the hang of it. Just remember to bring your own soap or dish soap, as those aren't provided. We stayed at Campsite One, which was spacious enough for 6-8 people and offered a fantastic value. Between the friendly hosts, fresh eggs, mountain views, and peaceful farm atmosphere, this was one of the best campsites we've enjoyed--and we'd happily return.
