Any visit I have made have tended to be with family or friends and on all occasions the staff have been pleasent and welcoming when ordering food, which is done by noting your table number and placing your order at the bar. Although I have never been diasppointed there are only 2 complaints - the toilets are upstairs and the portions could be increased to match thoses when it first opened.

The problem was I felt anxious/intimidated about booking a table for one at a Michelin rated restaurant. Had I known how gracious the team here are, I would not have worried one bit. To point on it, everything was absolutely perfect from start to finish. From being greeted warmly in their beautiful location, to being sat in the perfectly set dining room, to being waited on... enough to feel special.... but not too much as to feel crowded, it was perfect. That's not even addressing the food which was creative, delicious, and artistically presented. I had the set 5 course lunch menu and it was brilliant! It was also an incredible value. I had an opportunity to meet the chef briefly after he meal and I was honest when I told him he provided me one of the top 3 meals of my life. A big claim, but true. (I can't rate him above my Grandmother for sentimental reasons, and he was on par with an amazing kitchen I experienced in a castle in Slovenia.) It's a very sophisticated ambiance with an open kitchen and bar. The staff are dressed in business attire. What's nice is that it's a totally casual restaurant, and the opposite of my initial impression. According to the website, they welcome "children of all ages" and "dogs of all sizes" to the restaurant. It's a great family atmosphere. Our server was Nahla. She was absolutely wonderful in offering suggestions on the Sunday menu. She also made us feel very welcomed. We decided to get the 2 course Sunday Roast instead of the 3 course. Although, the Haggis Bon Bons came highly recommended. I kind of wish I had tried them, but the Sunday Roast was plentiful. I mean, it had all the fancy trimmings like root vegetables, hispi cabbage, and the most amazing roasted potatoes and yorkshire pudding. There's definitely a technique that makes them special. The potatoes were roasted perfectly using some sort of fat (duck, goose, or beef) that completely coated this creamy & fluffy potato. It gave it such a nice crispy coating. I know... it's just a potato but it's not. I can't explain it. The same with that yorkshire pudding. Pure perfection! Seriously. I've never had one this crispy, big, and fluffy. The entire plate was beautiful. I loved the rare roast beef with the gravy. If I had to say anything negative, it would be that there just wasn't enough gravy. Is there ever enough? My only suggestion would be to add a pitcher of gravy for those who want to use it on the potatoes and pudding. My husband loved the roast chicken. He said it was seasoned perfectly with a nice crispy skin. We chose a dessert for our 2nd course. It was a choice between Sticky Toffee Pudding or Black Forest Cheesecake. We chose the latter. It was so well-presented with delicious whole cherries on top. The pistachio ice cream went very well with the cheesecake. It was light and delicious. I'd order the exact same thing again and again. Do yourself a favor and check it out. It's such a treat, and totally worth the price. It's also in a beautiful location on St. Andrew Square in Edinburgh's New Town. My only regret is that we didn't get to stay in Edinburgh long enough to visit a second time. I would have loved to try the famous Beef Wellington. Oh, and definitely ask for Nahla. She made this experience even more special.

I ordered a prawn salad to start, which was perfectly nice, then the fish special for my main. The fish special was salmon with spices - and was really really tasty! Portion sizes weren't too big and were perfect for a lunchtime meal. The only slight gripe that I had was the veg served alongside my salmon, which wasn't great - but a bit of sauce made up for it. The only problem with Irrocco was that we were the only people in the whole restaurant. It's quite a large place - so it felt very obvious that we were alone. They also put a service charge on to our bill - which we weren't told about before hand. Irrocco is nicely decorated though with smartly dressed staff and stylish service. Plus the lunch menu especially is really good value.

Working around one of our family members diet restrictions and allergies was surprisingly easy. On arrival, the ambience was classy and we felt instantly immersed. The wait staff and sommelier were great at describing each course and wine pairing. The canapés were each wonderfully tasty and uniquely presented. The Caesar salad looked like a tiny pastry with a splash of flavor tucked inside. The salted cod was flaky and delicious inside a crisp wafer. The salmon sushi was deconstructed and the soy sauce transformed in to small flavor packed cubes. This dish was a treat! My favorite came next which was an Orkney scallop perfectly seared with a curry sauce. Dessert was a raspberry parfait on a macaroon paired smartly with a pink moscato. Where the Kitchin focused on the sea, Castle Terrace is about the land. Outstanding sourcing of ingredients prepared with great respect to elevate their natural flavors. A charming ambiance and friendly, proper service round out a near perfect dining experience. The menu is seasonal. Two prestarters whet the palette. A trio of amuse deceptions (they look nothing like they are supposed to be). The best being a liquefied Caesar salad. Like the liquefied olive, this one filled with the essence of romaine, egg, anchovies, sitting atop a crouton of parmesan. Popped in the mouth the flavor of a true Caesar salad burst forth. The second prestarter, an intense, acidic roasted tomato soup with a crisp olive stick. A refreshing start to the meal to come. The starters; a stunning ravioli of partridge atop seared foie, caramelized pear, braised celery in a partridge consume. Mind blowing.. The distinct rich, mineral flavor of the foie brings out the game flavor of the partridge and harmonizes it perfectly with the sweetness of the tender pear. Balance beyond belief in a simple dish. Not to be out shown, a simple broccoli volute with goat cheese ravioli. The clean vegetal flavor punched up by tangy, creamy goat cheese pillows and walnuts. Perfect. For mains, the grouse with chanterelles, bread sauce and watercress puree, simply outstanding. Very gamy, lean, and fork tender grouse pairs perfectly with all accompaniments. The watercress puree adds a green vibrancy that brightens the palate between bites. The legs are plated separately. Cooked in the bird with the innards, it has a pronounced game flavor. Outstanding. The roasted north sea cod presented topped with finely diced mushrooms and basil atop root veg, mushrooms and a "pasta sheet" of broccoli stems a harmonious blend of texture and flavor. Perfectly cooked, the essence of cod elevated by the use of root veg once again. Finally, a barbecued and braised shoulder of Ayrshire pork. Barbecue equals Asian flavors. A crispy piece of belly, a playful interpretation of a pulled pork sandwich in a chickpea bun. All told, the deep, sweet porky flavor explodes in this dish. Dessert is not to be missed. The caramel soufflé with popcorn ice cream, decadently rich. Distinct caramel aroma. Caramel coated popcorn adds a good textural foil, the distinct popcorn flavored ice cream, the perfect foil to reduce the sweetness of the caramel.
