Went in for some fries (and a whole lot more). And asked for some loaded stadium like fries. They were absolutely amazing. We probably didn't even need to get anything else. Made our day.

Tritip beef and potatoes with pickled onions

First and foremost, The food is fantastic! We dined on the patio and it was a great experience. We had our dog with us (chocolate lab) and the staff provided a big bowl of water. They also mentioned the availability of dog burgers -- well done beef patty with NO seasoning cut into chewable bites. There is a classic wood pool table on the patio ( with a great weathered patina!) and plenty of seating. But it comes down to the food. The smoked tri-tip was spectacular. Great smoke ring on perfectly done, moist beef. And the seasoned potatoes were crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. The Frenchie sandwich was hands down THE BEST FRENCH DIP anyone at our table ever tasted. The addition on sautéed onions, Swiss cheese, and a sublime au jus earned 5 stars. And the sides? The Mac and cheese was creamy and perfectly seasoned with a hint of ... something. I'm guessing truffle oil. But I'm not sure.

We were in Walla Walla for lunch, looking for an interesting meal and came across The Bonfire. After reading a couple of reviews that stated they were featured on a TV show, America's Best Restaurants, I thought it would make for a nice meal. I haven't watched that show before, but hey, it can't go wrong right? We arrived a bit before 1PM, sat on the patio outside due to the nice weather, and waited for our food. The Tmak Burger ($17) - Starting with the patty - The Bonfire includes a generous ground beef patty, but they cook it well done, making the meat quite dry on the interior. Luckily, there's enough moisture coming from the other elements in the burger. Firstly a melted slice of havarti that acts as kind of a glue/binder to stick the egg (complete with runny yolk) and bacon to the patty, resulting in a sandwich where the non-liquid ingredients manage to avoid spilling out of the bun. The patty sits on a bed of arugula and pickles, adding some bitter and tangy notes. This is all contained within a somewhat dense bun. They then spread peanut butter (which I found to be a bit softer and runnier than normal peanut butter) on the bottom bun, and blackberry jam on the top bun, making this into essentially a PB&J. Since the peanut butter is on the bottom, the predominant taste is peanut, followed by sweet jam. The rest of the ingredients inside kind of sit in the background. (4/5) The Philthy Cheesesteak, Smoked Provolone ($21) - The smoked chuck included in this sandwich is pulled into uneven shreds. It's quite smoky and tastes nicely seasoned, but is a bit dry - think pot roast type of texture. Luckily there's enough fat and moisture inside the sandwich to counteract the dryness of the meat. There's smoked provolone that creates a nice cheese pull. There are caramelized onions to add a bit of sweetness. There are red bell peppers and house sauce that's a little sweet and tangy. I especially love how they crisp up cheese on the flat top and then invert the bun over it, making a fantastic crispy cheese skirt. (4/5) Most entrees come with a side of fries. The waitress will ask if you want fries, onion rings, or salad, but the latter two will result in a $2 upcharge, which is not displayed anywhere on the menu. You can also order any other small side and subtract the cost of the fries ($5) to get the upcharge amount. For the Tmak, we got the Crispy Onion Rings ($2 Upcharge) - I absolutely love these onion rings. They are breaded well with a good crisp on the exterior. The onion does not fall apart at all. It's firmly set inside the breading and doesn't slide out while eating. The onion is quite sweet, like it's been cooked enough for the sugars to caramelize a bit, but does not create any sogginess - in fact, the onion still has a good snap. (5/5) For the Philthy Cheesesteak, we got the Bonfire Mac N Cheese ($5 Upcharge) - The cavatappi is cooked a bit over al dente, with some pieces being a bit softer than others. It's tossed in a very unctuous, rich cheese sauce that kind of tempers out some of the flavors of the herbs. Enhancing the dish are small rectangles of smoked and charred cheese melted on top, which adds a very nice kind of burnt/charred taste to the dish. (4/5) Overall the food at The Bonfire is pretty good even though the meat in both sandwiches were a bit dry. It's a definite recommend if you're ever in Walla Walla. Smokestack Burger. It is gigantic and the tick cut fries great.

I would have to say that the food was excellant. I could only eat 1/2 my philly cheesesteak. My sister had at least 1/2 of her prime rib left over. My brother ate all his burger and fries. The fries were think cut and perfectly cooked and salted. We will definately be going back with the rest of the fam.. my only complaints is that it is a very small place with not many tables. We were there at 5:30 on a Saturday and it was pretty full but there wasn't hardly a wait. Also I'm getting older and don't really like tall stools, there were just a few tables with normal size chairs. Well done!

Look at this mac, absolutely piled on and so damn good.

Everything tasted rushed and overpriced, making the experience disappointing overall.

Kind of pricey for what you get. Meat is good, pasta is gross, not much ambiance to speak of.

If you're starting to hear the murmurs about Zavrozita in the Valley, you've got your ear to the…read morepavement. This local food truck is really starting to pick up some steam in the word-of-mouth department. Walla Walla has it's share of REALLY good Mexican food (I'm looking at you, Agapes, Happy Wanderer and La Monarcha), but Zavrozita might be ready to contend for a heavyweight title holding. Starting off in the Whitman area food truck lot (where most trucks go to die), Zavrozita IMMEDIATELY sent a message to the competition in town. We do authentic food, we do it for the right price, and HEY...dare you to come down and check us out because we do it really, really well. I was dazzled alone by the social media pictures of the food before I even tried it. Following their presence in town for the last 4 months, I was also immediately impressed by their fearless move to embrace the late-night bar & college crowd- something I have rarely seen attempted and certainly not by a food truck. This may or may not be successful in the off months, but it certainly is refreshing seeing someone go for it. I digress.... Other than some questionable exterior design & signage, these guys are busting the doors open on social media and people are responding. Word is starting to spread and if you're like me, you're waiting for those first rounds of feedback to reach your ear-holes. Flashback to last night: Zavrozita's FIRST night at Burwood Brewery. Potentially the first night away from the mellow blips of the food truck dock and the occasional wandering college kid or drunken tourist that wandered off too far. This seemed to be the trial-run according to Burwood's website. You just got called up to the "Bigs", Zavrozita! I was excited, as were many others I knew in town. I know how these first nights can go if you're not properly experienced with volume, though; we went for it for it with LOTS of trepidation and a little hope. What we experienced was absolutely a lack of foresight on the part of the truck and certainly a telegraph that this was an inexperienced and overwhelmed crew. Waits were excruciating. Had the folks around us warned us, we would have moved on (as we had brought our hungry kids) and tried them another time. It would have even been nice for the owner to let us know average wait times and concede that they were a bit over their heads. I would have understood completely. Instead, we paid up front, and began our obscenely ridiculous hour-and-a-half wait for 2 tacos, a side of "mexicorn" and a Cuban sandwich. One we sat down, the grumbles from hungry patrons around us finally piped up all about. The people across from us were at 45 minutes and the other table was an hour. Yikes. This was going to be a LONG night. We checked in with her at the hour and 20 mark and they seemed to be confused at first, but then promised we would be expedited. Was our order lost? Who knows. I think the real frustration was the blahzay attitude of the staff. They could see customers losing patience and ticket times were abysmal, but it didn't seem to get them moving any faster or acknowledge the mess. Yes, "keep your cool" when the ship is sinking, but don't leave your clientele in the dark. Acknowledge a wait-time when it gets past 30 minutes. Send out some free chips or something. Give them a 10% off coupon on next visit. Gauge them. (Sigh) Again, I digress.... Why is this review a 3-star? Because, well, the food ended up being just what it looked to be: insanely delicious & creative Mexican cuisine coming out of a food truck that seemed to be barely doggy-paddling the whole time we were there. This food has heart. Creativity. Perfect balance. Flavor profiles that will dazzle. This food SINGS. SERIOUSLY. I left that night like I can imagine most people did: sort of shaking off and forgetting how damn long it took to get that first bite. Here's the deal: at the end of the day, the ONLY thing that will save you from poor execution and a disaster of a wait-time, is really, really damn good food. Zavrozita: you ran the gauntlet and survived. AND HOW! I will be back for more. I'll just keep it to the weeknight, off-dinner times for now. ;)
