Easily the best book store in Madison. No contest. The Book Deal is in an unassuming, sort of odd location, but it all adds to the character of the place. There is plenty of signage and the folks who run it will walk you around if you're a first time visitor. Extremely friendly people who really care about books and spreading the joy of reading to everyone. The collection and variety is pretty incredible. I go there with my fiancé at least once a month, usually twice, and we always leave with an incredible haul between the two of us. The majority of the stock is $3.99-4.99 and the books are in great condition! There's a range in price depending on what you're interested in (collectibles, new releases, etc.) but there's something for everyone. Dedicated rooms for different genres make it easy to find something you'll like. As much as I'd love to keep this gem to myself, the Book Deal deserves all the support that book lovers of Madison have to offer! Worth the trip out of downtown. See you next time! read more

A great locally-owned, ultra friendly bookstore that specializes in a well-organized, incredibly reasonably priced inventory of hardcovers, paperbacks, dvds, cds, comics, graphic novels and vintage publications. I make it a point to stop in every week or so because the inventory turns over fast, with new arrivals all the time. Can't say enough about the MOOD of the place...it's just great. It's everything it says it is. It's books! It's a deal! Everything is the same price, i.e. paperbacks are a set price and hard covers are a set price. I can't remember if it was.99cents and 1.99 or 1.99 and 2.99. Either way I got a ton of stuff for like $30.00 It's in a clean but inexpensive office space(it's a deal, remember). So you have to walk down the hallway a bit. Plenty of parking. I found out about it old school style on a bulletin board in a cafe. Posted the tear off tag for posterity. Anybody who rates this anything other than a 5 Star is very confused. I don't think one could do better for such a concept/ price point. read more

I saw that The Book Deal was having a $1 paperback book sale yesterday and decided to visit. Much like the parable, don't judge a book by it's cover. Similarly, don't judge The Book Deal by it's outward appearance or location. It is in an obscure office building, with signs pointing you down a twisting hallway. The journey is worth it. The employees were very helpful and welcoming, explaining the paperback book deal. The Book Deal is overwhelming at times with the number of rooms packed with books but, book yourself an hour or so to dig through all of the literary treasures you can find there. The variety of book genres are similar to what you can find at any other used book store. The rooms are a bit cramped but, everyone is polite in exploring for that perfect read. The book prices were amazing. As I said, I was there for the $1 paperback sale but, a hardcover book will run you about $3, which is a steal. They have anything from vinyl records, to classics, to an entire room of kids books. Stop by The Book Deal, spend some quality book searching time, and spend not too much money on literary treasures! read more

I stopped in due to the good reviews and I wasn't disappointed! The long hallway to the store can be a bit off putting, but it's definitely worth the adventure. The staff was very friendly, helpful, and informative and didn't hesitate to show me around. We found plenty of treasures and will be coming back again soon! read more

Update! I've been back a couple of times now. They have signage up everywhere and it's so so nice! They're super helpful when you walk in, always let you know what deals they have going on. Their FB page is extremely active and awesome (you can dibs books)! Just be ready to spend some time digging through everything. I think it's fun but if you're looking for something specific it'll take you some time. read more

The Book Deal is a great spot! Once you navigate the hallways to get to the store (it is there, I promise), it's a super cozy space packed with books. My husband and I picked up a ton of books, including a couple cookbooks and coffee table books for about $20--a great deal! The staff was helpful but not overbearing. There's also a great children's book room, and as a bonus, I just learned they donate a book to the schools for every book you buy. read more
