To sum up my review below: Sammye is a lifesaver…read more When I first got my puppy, I thought I was doing all the things right, playing crate games, working on obedience, etc, but still wound up with a pup with horrible separation anxiety. I tried every online tutorial and blog, working for months on my own trying to gradually desensitize my dog to being alone. After months of little to no progress, I was starting to worry I'd have a dog with life long panic attacks who I could never leave alone. I tried several private trainers, who more or less parroted the same things I was reading online and had already tried on my own. Anytime I left the house I either had to take my pup with me or pay someone from rover if I couldn't find an available friend to watch her. I had several months off before starting a new job, and I treated training my dog like a full time job yet still wasn't making progress. Sammye's reverse board and train changed everything. After a few weeks of reverse board and train days (The trainer comes to your house for several hours to work on a problem in the dogs home environment), I now have a dog who I can leave at home without a second thought. No crying, no whining, and certainly no more panic attacks! Sammye was always very respectful of my home and I always felt comfortable leaving her with my pup and a house key. As a bonus, my pup was always exhausted after a full day of working with Sammye, which meant I got to enjoy a tired out, snuggly pup when I got home. Sammye was incredibly patient with her, and used positive reinforcement methods that aligned with my own philosophy (I can't say the same of the other trainers I tried). Sammye was so professional and clearly very knowledgeable in her field, and I cannot recommend her enough. If I could give her 10 stars I would. As my pup grows more I'm sure we will run into other problems, and I fully intend on reaching out to Sammye when the time comes. Thank you Sammye for all your hard work!

Decided upon a little girl I had my eye on. She was still available so we (husband and I proceeded forward with Ms. E.; who's the owner of YofH.) The process was detailed, professional, caring, and I felt comfortable proceeding with our adoption of little Miss Lemon Drop. She's a little party animal and a sweet baby. We had the online meeting and then decided to drive to pick her up. I love that she's already on a schedule. She sleeps through the night; greets us in the morning and we hang out all day. She has already been to her new vet and has a clean checkup. He was pleased with her. She's been a delight.

After reading the numerous 1-star reviews, I see why…read moreand it's because almost all of them are missing the point and judging it based on some preconceived idea or notion that isn't remotely applicable. To operate at such a large scale with incredibly thorough medical care imposes a high financial risk for any business let alone one that is focused on pets found in horrendous conditions all across the state. I cannot believe there is 1-star review for someone saying, "you should just go get a bred dog for these prices." That's a different can of worms which is incredibly unfortunate to even read as that completely defeats the purpose shelters work so hard for. Needless to say, I'd much rather pay more $$ for a rescue than a bred animal so someone can make a pretty penny forcing animals to give birth for their pocketbook's sake. Now, why this shelter is actually amazing and does not deserve anything less than 5 stars (other than strikes for employee customer service experiences as of course those are more than valid): The state of Texas is so behind when it comes to managing strays and animals in general across the state. There are so many shelters that resort to putting down animals as there is such a massive volume of pets abused, isolated, abandoned, etc. I won't get into that, but suffice to say, the state/conditions a lot of these animals come in with are less than stellar. This shelter goes above and beyond for Texas' animals' wellbeing and ensures they are healthy and well looked after, not stuck in cages all day long. Moreover, they reach out to other states who are much more kind to pets and bring literal truckloads of animals up interstates to deliver to folks who will love and care for them. I think that's fantastic as it helps provide a need in other areas while also lessening the incredible burden Texas has put on itself with its mediocre pet laws and prosecution efforts. TL;DR - I received the most amazing 1-year old "aggressive breed" from this shelter who is an absolute angel and fixture in our family. The amount of care and trust they put in has absolutely wowed me and I am sure to attend their fundraisers and help in other ways I can. If you are looking for a life partner, please go here and help support the tremendous things they do for Houston and the state as a whole. Know that your money will be much better served here than elsewhere and while you may have bad customer service experiences, just know that the people that work here are more animal people than people people lol and that's a good thing!

Very responsive and helpful…read more That being said, this dog has issues that I have never encountered as well as countless families close to my Basset and I. The amount of money this dog costs and the amount of issues it has physically and behaviorally is absurd. Permanent ligament damage due to deformed bones. Can't even take this dog on a walk without him collapsing, then can't walk for a day or two after. He been to two trainers, one of which is a hound dog trainer, and both apologized to me due to the fact that he couldn't grasp anything and was mentally "different" than the others and had physical limitations even as a puppy that aren't normal. He has three testicles and the most respected vet in town said "I have been doing this for 30 years and this is the most amazing perplexing dog I've ever seen, I'm so sorry". Even other Basset Hound owners in a club I am apart of have said I have been sold an overbred dog. Not sure if that's the case however I've been skeptical since seeing him and a two vets opinions. Not to mention seeing other bassets which showed me how the Basset I have is not normal or healthy. Again, the breeder was very kind and I'm sure others who have gotten his dogs have got very good and healthy Bassets, but I have not. He does not even look like those put in these reviews. This has been a very rough experience, this being my third puppy, very disappointed.

We have tried on several occasions to visit in person over a 2-year time period to view animals and no one is around during posted hours. Today, a miracle! We talked to a lady exiting the gate who rudely said you must set an appointment. She did not know I was calling the number while my husband was talking to her. He noticed she looked at the phone ringing. She ignored the calls. It is our belief this "adoption center" is not amiable to adopting out the captured pets. We hope they are not unnecessarily euthanizing animals.

We cannot say enough about how happy we are with the results we have attained thus far while working with Cathy.
