I've been here about six times over the last ten years with friends. It's a nice place to come to relax for the weekend and have some spa treatments (there is a spa onsite). Your meals are included and they are good. There is a dance on Saturday nights with DJ Dave spinning the tunes. DJ Dave is an old dude and has been here for years. When I'm here, it's mostly women so he should be playing lots and lots of fun songs. He kind of does this but then will play a bunch of slow songs in a row for the handful of couples which brings down the energy of the place. The nature walk with Diana Rowney is interesting as you'll learn a lot about the property, the area and the owners. The top of the tower is my favourite spot on the property ... check it out!

I'd stay in the historic section if I were you.

Decided to take a break from the city, and head north to stay at this Lake Simcoe resort for a couple nights. I recommend booking a room in their historic Manor House, as this is the best part of the rambling hotel (the new additions do not look that nice). Each morning, it was lovely to get up early, stroll around their lovely gardens, and then go for nice long walks along the lake shore on Hedge Road. There are many historic homes to admire, and the road leads to the charming St. George's Anglican Church. Just beyond the church lies Sibbald Point Provincial Park, another beautiful spot to walk around the get some fresh air, before walking back to the inn. As a day trip from the inn, we decided to visited friends at the magical Tinkl Gallery, located just outside the town of Uxbridge. (Depending on the season, one can join the Uxbridge Studio Tour.) On the way back home, we took a bit of a detour to Sharon, Ontario, in order to visit the impressive Sharon Temple, an architectural masterpiece, and a National Historic Site of Canada. All in all, this was a wonderful road trip. I recommend using The Briars as your base to explore more of Lake Simcoe, and the surrounding region.

There are reunions, and there are family reunions. We had family members that were planning to gather from the America's -- yes, North America, and selected beautiful Ontario, CA (not Cali). Let me start by saying the resort and their people are wonderful. This is a rustic little city with a quaint atmosphere with serene views as far as the eye can see. The cottages and boathouse are nested away a beautiful shoreline that incases Lake Simcoe. Here's where we met Andrew; an amazing chef at the Briars that would give Emerald and Bobby Flay a run for the money. Andrew created a fabulous dinner with an amazing presentation, phenomenal service; enough to challenge the best NY restaurants! Pay homage to a great chef, before he is sought out by the big restaurant owners of Ontario, New York or abroad, and disappears from this little non descript hideaway. Cheers to the Briars for holding on to this amazing talent.

I drove over here and parked at Newmarket Riverwalk Commons. It's the closest parking lot. It was busy, but I managed to nab a parking spot and walk over to this building. I didn't find Ghost Taco. The bottom level had Ground Burger Bar and the main entrance to Eventmrkt. I decided to walk up a couple of ramps to the second floor. It looked like office space and was locked. Although the sandwich board said that Eventmrkt was closed for a private eveent and there was no entry, I did the opposite. I was a tourist in this area with inaccurate information. I walked in. Eventmrkt is an event space. It looked like a wedding reception was about to happen. Two women were there. I started off apologizing. I said that I was looking for Ghost Taco and couldn't find it. One of the women who came over was extremely helpful and nice. She pointed at the bridge that you could easily see from this venue's window. She let me know that I could walk across the bridge and hang a right. The business is there. She also gave me some inside history. She said that Ghost Taco used to be where we were standing. However, the business found a new location on Main Street, so it's there now. I thanked her for steering me in the right direction and wished her a good evening. She reciprocated. So, I kind of crashed a wedding that hadn't started. I am glad that the woman was understanding about my dropping by when the sign clearly said that it was a private event. Yes, I made it to Ghost Taco. Unless I'm here for a private event in the future, I'll stay away from Eventmrkt. (197)

Their new space is stunning, both indoors and out and would be the perfect spot to hold a shower or intimate event. We enjoyed their afternoon tea which included a selection of sandwiches, scones, baked goods and tea for $19.95 per person, an excellent price! Their teas, scones and sandwiches are delightful. The reason for the 4 stars is that I think the petit fours/pastry/cookie tier of their tray could use a bit of improvement. Although it's beautiful to look at, they're not as yummy as the other items. They also offering "high tea" on Fridays between 4-6 which includes a choice of soup or salad; followed by the entree of the day (Sheppard's pie, Meat Pie with mashed potatoes, Irish Stew with Dumplings or sausage rolls with mashed potatoes and gravy), dessert, tea and a cold beverage, all for $29.95. Reservarions are required and can be made online. Before you leave, don't forget to pop upstairs and visit the vendors located on the upper floor of the building that sell a little bit of everything, including great gifts from local makers.
