Though the guide's knowledge was great, the house itself... Meh. Age and apathy seem to have settled the house down into a state not quite approaching disrepair but not far off either. What once may have been grandiose is now just old, jaded, faded, and big, but not fancy, while the conservation service running the show seems disinclined to keep up with the grounds on any level other than blowing leaves away from the walkways. Even the cars in the museum have half flat tires. Waste of time and money.

Great experience at the Kykuit Highlights Tour…read more This tour is about 1.5 hours and covers the first floor of the estate and outside. There are other (longer) tours that include more of the estate if you like. All tours leave from the Visitor's Center. There is a large parking lot there...but there is also some overflow parking around the corner ii needed. The overflow lot is a short walk to the Visitor's Center. The center has a large shop with lots of gifts and souvenirs. There are also some snacks and bakery-items (coffee, tea, pastries) available for purchase. There are bathrooms and the ticketing area. You check in at the ticketing area and are given a hand band. A bus (very nice and comfy) will take the tour guests from the visitor's center to the estate...the ride is about 10 minutes. The tour guide will also be on the bus offering some information throughout the ride, including information on the structures and facilities within the larger estate as you pass those by. The tour itself was great...but I can see some may want to visit the other floors of the estate, which is only included in the longer tours. Lots of information throughout the tour. They do keep the schedule pretty tight though as I noticed our tour guide checking the schedule regularly to determine how much time to spend at each room. I understand this is crucial in order to accommodate the various timed tours but it does leave little room for asking questions and some of it felt a little rushed. Photography is ONLY permitted outside of the estate. You cannot take photos inside the estate. You are taken back to the visitor's center when the tour it completed. Overall I had a great visit. I would love to return to view some of the other offerings...such as the Philipsburg Manor. All staff I encountered were friendly and helpful.

The River walk behind it is nice but there's a TON of construction going on around it that maybe is timed for end of 2024 as well. One can hope!

6/7/26: The Edward Hopper House is located at 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, New York. He grew up in this…read moresmall home. We were greeted by a very nice young lady named Sierra upon entering. She gave us a brief description of the home. There was an older woman speaking with Sierra. Overhearing their discussion, this woman appeared to some connections with the museum. However, she couldn't even bother to smile or say hello to us. I could on..... We then went into an adjoining room and saw a video about the artist's life. Edward sketched and painted maritime and industrial aged scenes. Also, he sketched pictures of his "relationship" with his wife. Edward's wife Josephine was his muse. She was an artist in her own right. During our visit, Artist Thomas Prose had his nature art on display. Please see attached photos of Prose's works. In the backyard, there are several benches. It appears that the museum has outdoor events. All in all, this small home museum is set up very nicely. Upon entry, there's a cute gift shop of Edward Hopper's books, sketches and more. Street parking is available.

This house isn't very big or have any of Edward Hopper's paintings, but it is an interesting…read moreglimpse into his youth that you can see how the quiet suburbs spoke to his figurative works. There is a short video and some of his early possessions and photographs, then a contemporary art exhibit, and upstairs there's one room decorated for how it would have been during Hopper's lifetime. The artist Tomokazu Matsuyama reinterpreted Hopper's work which was an interesting visual experience. There was no tour, but the employee did give us some additional information in between other people coming in to pay. She seemed very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about Hopper and explained the house was in disrepair after Hopper's death and restored by a nonprofit. It's a pretty cheap self-guided experience but cool information to gather. The gift shop is minimal and parking is paid on street, but it's a cute street, so you might as well walk around a little after. For art lovers, it's a neat little spot to visit, and I'm glad it has been preserved. It's worth stopping by if you're a fan of Hopper's.

I was able to find a spot to stop my car that was probably not a legal space. The marker reads, "Rockland Brink's Robbery. On October 20, 1981, a three-year crime spree in the New York Metropolitan area came to an end at this site. Members of the Weather Underground, a radical domestic terrorist group, robbed a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall. Using high-powered weapons, they stole 1.6 million dollars, and shot and killed security guard Peter Paige. At this entrance to the New York State Thruway, the Nyack Police Department set up a roadblock and was ambushed by the assailants. A fierce shootout ensued. As a reult, Sergeant Edward J. O'Grady Jr and Police Officer Waverly "Chipper" Brown were shot and killed. All the suspects were apprehended. Subsequent trials held in Goshen and White Plains led to their convictions." The 1981 Brink's robbery was an armed robbery and three related murders committed on October 20, 1981, which were carried out by six Black Liberation Army members: Mutulu Shakur, Kuwasi Balagoon, Solomon Bouines (Samuel Brown), Mtayari Shabaka Sundiata, Edward Joseph, and Cecilio "Chui" Ferguson; and four former members of the Weather Underground, now belonging to the May 19th Communist Organization, consisting of David Gilbert, Judith Alice Clark, Kathy Boudin, and Marilyn Buck. They stole $1.6 million in cash from a Brink's armored car at the Nanuet Mall, in Nanuet, New York (about six miles west), killing a Brink's guard, Peter Paige, seriously wounding Brink's guard Joseph Trombino, slightly wounding Brink's truck driver guard, James Kelly, subsequently killing two Nyack police officers, Edward O'Grady and Waverly Brown, and seriously wounding Police Detective Artie Keenan.
