The Butcher Shoppe is a staple in Chambersburg, PA. I have been coming here since childhood and I never fail to marvel at everything that is available. Obviously, you can buy just about any kind of meat you're looking for: beef, chicken, veal, etc., but you can also buy super fresh seafood, deli items, bakery items, hoagies, salads, pre-made meals and much more. The Butcher Shoppe has a partnership with Falafel Shack, a popular restaurant in downtown Chambersburg, so you can find their heat-and-serve individual meals in the refrigerator case. Each and every staff member is helpful and greets you with a smile, from the butchers to the check-out associates and baggers. When asked what to get at The Butcher Shoppe, I often tell folks that everything is good, and it's true. I don't think I've encountered one item in my lifetime of visits that I didn't enjoy. Even though it's gone through a few upgrades over the years, there is always a great sense of nostalgia each and every time I step foot inside the store. The Big Oak Café is great because you can order a variety of drinks and also grab a quick snack or meal while on the go. I can't say enough good things about The Butcher Shoppe. It will forever be a favorite place of mine and a definite stop when I'm in the area.

Great small grocery store. They still bag everything in paper bags and prices are comparable to big box stores.

Update to my review more than a year ago. I've been here twice this year and there are reasons it's…read morenot more often. Both visits showed me business has slowed. I'm guessing some of what I experienced both times this year may be a factor for others as well. Overall this is a nice locally owned restaurant. I like to support local business when I can. But what I encounter here prevents me from doing so often. The big issues are the elderly woman who seems to be the primary server as she appears to be here all of the times I've been here. She's abrupt, seems passive aggressive. I'm afraid to ask for what I want, such as no oil on my perfectly good green beans that they screw up by putting oil all over, with garlic. I just wanted healthy green beans, not oiled up ones. She seemed to be very bothered or get mad. Then the passive side cones out when she says the worn out server talk of wishing me a nice day when I pay the bill. Ironically their vegetarian menu item is three sides (veggie choices that they already have oiled up or you get steamed. Don't ask for the green beans without the oil, the server told me she doesn't know how the cook makes them, he just does it the way he does. Not exactly what I'd expect or want to hear. I'd expect an answer that would be something along the lines of asking the cook not to do the oil, just steam or cook in water instead. Nope, not here. Not a vegetarian or vegan friendly place at all. Too bad, since it's in an area of farms and likely has people shopping at farm stands who might stop for a bite too. The "haddock" looked and tasted more like flounder or tilapia to me (see pic). But it was good and baked without oil or butter as I asked. I asked for lemon and got two small slices. Not enough for the fish let alone for the two veggies, and the unsweetened ice tea i ordered as well. This place has promise and the food is mostly good but some more customer friendly changes should be made, including not being so skimpy on the lemon. I gave just 3 stars this year because the other 2 were when I had a much younger more accommodating server who made my meal eating a good experience unlike this and my last visit.

I had…read moreunusual work travel north of Hancock, MD and was visiting my parents in Lancaster, PA that night. I made a gigantic sideways U on the map from my home in the Baltimore area to Needmore area to Chambersburg including Hoss's for dinner to my parents in Lancaster. I asked my friend, who went to college at Dickinson many years ago, if he had any recommendations in PA for dinner that I can't get in MD. He recommended Hoss's. I rarely do buffets as they are unhealthy, but when in Rome, Hoss's was nearby, and I was game to try them out. I asked if I could view the buffet before I decide to eat here. Price is a bit high, but nothing crazy. Upon viewing the buffet, I determined overall a good looking buffet with both salad/cold foods & the hot foods. It's not a huge buffet like a Golden Corral, but far superior to that weak place. So, you order a steak or whatever off their menu with options for the salad bar & hot buffet section. I got the "Hoss's Choice" , which was the Steak Tips. It was the cheapest option, and I didn't want a huge steak as I was more interested in the buffet. Staff & server was nice and prompt with water refills. Much of the buffet items were good including the salad, chili, mac n' cheese, & soup. My steak tips came with a side of my choice, which I got the baked sweet potato. I think the baked sweet potato was my favorite. But the steak tips were solid. I remember liking the chili. Mac n' cheese was kind of weak. Majority of the buffet items were good, but there were a couple of things that were weak, which is standard for any buffet, even a good one. As if all the buffet food plus my entree weren't enough, eventually it was time was dessert. I got a couple of desserts like a mousse & ice cream with various toppings I added including Oreo, a liberal amount of caramel, gummy bears, & more. My sweet tooth was running high, and it was delicious too. If ever in Chambersburg or one of their other 28 locations, I'd consider Hoss's as a reasonable option.
