As a recent transplant down 52 to Lexington from Winston, of course, one of the first places you will go in a new town is the grocery store! Unfortunately, that has been one of the low points of the area. As far as groceries go, there are really two name brand chain grocery stores, and while they have about everything you could need, both are seriously lacking in the fresh produce and meat departments. Luckily, that is right where The Butcher's Block comes in! I saw an ad for them on a local downtown Lexington map and went to check it out the next day. Upon walking in I was relieved to have found my place to pick up meat, fish, some seasonal produce, and some semi local packaged good/gifts as well! So far I have been a few times and gotten steaks, shrimp, a few vegetables, and even a sample of an Oyster, and everything has tasted very fresh and certainly been worth the trip. They have had a decent selection of all of your normal cuts of beef and seafood each time I have been in, and the staff have been very helpful. It also sounds like with a little lead time they could probably get just about anything you were looking for that they did not have in stock for you. Beyond the produce they have a decent little selection of packaged items from around the state. just of the top of my head I noticed Richard's Seasoning (Browns Summit), Ashe County Cheese(Jefferson), Giacomo's Salami(Greensboro/Elon), Cape Fear Rum Cakes (Wilmington), and probably a dozen more I did not notice or remember. It is always nice to be able to find things like this when in need of a gift, or just to treat yourself sometimes! It seems as if The Butcher's Block has been around for a little while, and I hope they continue to do well! I've purchased meat here 3-4 times now and twice I've been disappointed. This last time was the worse because I paid $80 for 10 pounds of beef and at least 1/3 of the meat was pure fat and I'm being generous. It was probably closer to 40 or 50% of the meat was edible because it was pure fat. Because it was cut and wrapped in 1 pound portions in butcher paper, I couldn't examine the meat before I purchased it, and this store is 30" out of my way to start with. Needless to say, I can't afford to throw away 4 or 5 pounds purchased that I can't eat. read more
