Let me tell you upfront: There is no elevator. You will have to climb up all those stairs. I huffed and puffed my way up there and it was a mad house once I arrived. Seems to be a popular place. Several parties were going on, seemed like a bachelorette party, a birthday, a group of folks all dressed in pink and another group dressed like flappers. It was extremely loud and unfortunately I was not able to make my way to an area where I could have checked out the view. It is semi covered by a roof and then there is an open air area, but the are large umbrellas you can hide under. I had a nice little drink and enjoyed the people watching. They have quite a drink menu and also offer some food, but that is rather limited. Just come up here for the drinks and the party atmosphere. Had it not been for Yelp (thank you Yelp) and my own lust for BBQ, I would have never found this place since it really is up on top of a roof and when I went there had to navigate my way through a first floor restaurant, The Sugarmill, in order to find the staircase. The staircase had a few more steps than I had thought but since the walls were covered with a rather nifty form of graffiti art sort of fun. Overall I found the seating and general atmosphere of being up on the roof top extremely pleasant and sort of a welcome relief from being on street level. The general set up with bar and food service is really good, orderly, neat, clean, trendy and fun. For food, I went for the for their Wagyu flat iron steak. Though listed on their menu as barbecue it actually came grilled, but that might be because Australians, as is the much the same situation in the United States north of the Mason Dixon line, are oblivious to the differences between "barbecuing" and "grilling." Hence when Australians say they are going to "toss whatever on the barbie," they actually mean they are going to toss it upon an open grill. Nevertheless, the steak was really good, served with a nice side salad. My dining companion, Yelper Jim D., ordered the salmon skewers which were likewise perfectly grilled, served with a side of greens and topped with a sprig of fresh dill in what was not only delicious but eye appealing. Because of the good food, reasonable prices and nifty rooftop location, I haven't any hesitation in being a fan of Sweetheart's or of recommending it. read more

OK, if you could muster up an image of what "Sydney" would look like as a bar/restaurant/lounge - this place nails it (minus the foreign frangipani trees clearly borrowed from the Pacific Islands ... 'sup Tahiti). Imagine if you will, a set, nay, a flight of stairs upon entry leading you up to the rooftop where a "you've made it" sign greets you - it's to the point, it's tongue in cheek, as good Aussie humour is supposed to be - I like it. The rooftop is spacious enough, its quirky, casual, there are bright blue picnic tables, smaller tables for parties of 2, multi-coloured lights straight out of the 80s dangling above and a crew so relaxed, it feels more like a mates backyard barbie shindig. To order the food, you simply enter the number of each menu item you want on the slip provided in the clipboard. Its simple, the food is BBQ, the condiments aplenty - be sure to try them all (or not .. your loss). We ordered skewers and salads for the night, settling on pork, beef tritip and chicken skewers, a tomato heirloom salad, green beans and a ton of condiments. The chicken was okay - it had a 'not so friendly' spice rub on it which unfortunately had me manically dipping my knife into the trio of mustards, speaking of which, the Hot English Mustard (HEM) came with a warning from the waitress - A WARNING? What? Is this a throwdown? Bring it. Well, lets just say HEM - 1, me - 0. Disclaimer: I accept no liability for any damage arising from the misuse of this mustard and recommend a smear as opposed to the fairly significant dollop I placed on my chicken. Ohh .. almost forgot, the music was unreal - old school hip hop, straight to a little easy listening and right back into some classic Hall and Oates !! Why for has Melbourne more rooftop bars than Sydney? WHY FOR I ask you. Melbourne people can't even wear shorts properly, they don't deserve a raft of rooftops. One of the few bad boys we gots is Sweethearts, sitting atop Kit & Kaboodle on what used to be the main party street of the Cross, but which is now the ....idk.... cafe street? What do we call the Cross these days? Anyway, yadda yadda lots of stairs yadda yadda wooooorth it, plus you're getting free exercise, stop complaining. Great for a chilled quiety or a raging party, this open-air pen is even more enjoyable with Tommy's Margaritas, just $10 from 4-6pm daily. Ain't no after-work heart starter like anything with tequila. The food menu looks so good. Like, ribs with home-made BBQ sauce, and Andouille sausage good. Love this place! It is located right in the middle of the dirty and noisy part of Darlinghurst Road but you totally forget that you are in this area. After climbing a certain number of stairs (be prepared!), you discover this amazing rooftop with wooden tables surrounded by plants and bulb lights. The food is really good, we had 4 small dishes to share - the scallops were memorable. You can have jugs of Pimm's of Sangria. On top of that, waiters are nice and the vibe is really pleasant. It is just the perfect spot for a summerish evening. read more

I came here for dinner because my friend was craving bbq. I'm not a big bbq fan, so I got the garlic and herb salmon fillet. My friend's food came pretty fast, but mine took so long to come out! My salmon was perfectly done, but I could not taste the garlic or herbs at all. It was too bland. I had to put salt, pepper, and lemon on it. However, the side salad it came with was delicious. The acidity in the dressing balanced the whole dish out. Since it's a rooftop restaurant, the noise is very loud. It was a little difficult to have a conversation with my friend. read more

This place is absolutely delightful! I found the Sweethearts Rooftop September special on Facebook, where they play movies for free every Monday night. I recommended this to my professor instead of class and to my surprise she accepted it wholeheartedly! We had dinner prior to arriving so unfortunately we didn't get to try any of their food. However, my friend and I split a Jug of the Paradise something drink. It was blue/green and absolutely delicious. The vibes were awesome, relaxed and chill. It helped me forget it was Monday. They aired 10 Things I Hate About You, an American classic. I would definitely come back to this amazing rooftop gem. Loved how close it was to the train stop! However, the overall area it's located in is kind of sketch and plastered with strip clubs and adult shops. Don't worry you're going the right way. read more

Not so much a BBQ as a Mexican Bar but good none the less! All types of seating from high tops, to benches, to lounge chairs to a love seat, for whatever you're in need of. The lights are a nice touch to add color. The ground is uneven so be careful! I had the Rose, which was not what I expected as it was a bit sour, but it was in the fridge and she just opened it so I guess that was right! I have to take a star off because one of the bartenders reprimanded another while people were waiting for drinks. I couldn't hear 100% what it was about but the reprimand-er kept saying 'its not a big deal, just remember for the future'--so why could it not wait? Or not be in public? Or not be said in a more friendly way so the reprimand-ee did not look so scared? read more

Americana-themed rooftop BBQ that pumps out sweet jams from my high school dance days alongside ribs and sliders under fairy lights? Yes. Please. A high rating was practically in the bag after Blackstreet's 'No Diggity' evolved into Arrested Development's "Everyday People" only to then morph into Puff Daddy & Mase's 'Can't Nobody Hold Me Down." It was like they saw me walk in with my "play me 90s jams and I'll be yours forever" t-shirt that's anything but ironic. And I should have known. With previous successes like The Gazebo, Manly Wine and the Winery under their belt, these guys truly know how to provide patrons with a relaxed atmosphere to drink in both the booze and the ambiance. Hate to admit it but for awhile I've kind of disregarded the Sugar Mill building- thinking it was just another Cross bar filled with super young people. Take a trip up to the rooftop though and you'll find quite a sophisticated space, perfect for an afternoon beer or an evening outing. Plenty of seating up on the roof and a KILLER soundtrack to set the mood, too. It's not a massive space so you may wait in line if you come too late in the evening. My tip would be to come late afternoon and settle in. read more

Definitely a hike to get to but a great atmosphere once you get to the top. There were some great happy hour deals which our group took advantage of and plenty of heaters to keep us warm on that chilly evening. Pros: Fun and funky decor, good choice of happy hour drinks and I agree with Laura N- great music! I was seriously loving the music all night. I imagine I'd love this place even more on a sunny summer afternoon. Cons: Sorry but I just don't think the BBQ is as great as everyone else. It's good, but nothing special to me and it is seriously expensive for what you get in my opinion. Perhaps for one person the serving is big, but do you really JUST want a meat skewer? Probably not. You probably want side dishes so that means sharing with others. To get a few items just to share you're looking at a bigger bill. I also can't stand half indoor/half outdoor bars that have smoking. This is a funky little bar perched at the top of quite a number of stairs. But like Melbourne's Rooftop Bar, the reward is worth the workout; Sweetheart's is a great spot to kick back with some friends, some booze, and some old school hip hop. The set-up is super festive, with multi-coloured lights strung everywhere, and drinks served in bright tumblers. I didn't eat, but the food looked pretty ace; particularly the sliders, which were so inviting they bordered on smutty. Oh, yeah; and the place is overrun by babes. So, there's that. read more

Sweethearts is touted as Sydney's first rooftop BBQ. It is a bit of a hike upstairs to get there (4-5 stories from memory), but definitely worth the walk. While it's right in the middle of Kings Cross, being on the roof takes you far enough away from the street down below that you can really chill out. I went there for a friend's birthday last week...to be honest I was a little put-off by it before we went because it's a bit more expensive than what I would normally pay, and the dishes are all very basic so you don't really get a sense that it would be worth what you're paying for. I was singing a very different tune once we got our food though. There was a group of six of us, and all of us were way impressed with the quality of what we got. They don't skimp on the portion sizes either. We all shared bits and pieces (which I definitely recommend for the variety), and by the time we finished we were all happily stuffed and ready for a nice lie-down. The surprise winner for me was definitely their potato salad. I am not generally a fan of potato salad because while it CAN be great, I find it usually is really bland and smothered in creamy sauce...this definitely wasn't the case here, and I will probably get it myself next time. A couple of us also thought the QLD bug tails looked amazing, though we were way too full to think about eating anything else. I had to leave early, but I'm pretty sure they gave my friend a cake for her birthday after we left as well! Good service! All in all, a great experience and while it's a bit costly to make a regular thing, I can definitely see it being a great way to wind down on a Friday night after work every now and then, or for special occasions. read more

Amazing rooftop for a night out! Fun drinks available by the pitcher and they even have margaritas on draft! Food is decent, standard Mexican fare (tacos, nachos, burritos...). Actually the best thing we had was the grilled corn on the cob! Make sure you have ID upon entering, as they require it at all times to enter! This is not so much a review as a heads-up that this establishment as described on Yelp no longer exists. There is a business here, but it's not a Mexican restaurant. I couldn't tell exactly, but it seems to have the same menu as Potts Point Hotel, which is downstairs. We left after finding out that if you order a burger downstairs it costs $10 on Mondays, but if you order the exact same burger and eat it on the rooftop bar it costs $19. Once you recover from the bagillion stairs, the roof top is a very pleasant space to just chill with friends, I did think $17.50 for a pims and gin to be a bit exy but thats probably the cheapskate in me coming out but to counter balance that, the food was quite reasonably priced. I ordered the uncle sam burger and it came with a side of the best chips I think I have ever eaten. Service was fast and friendly and the whole atmosphere of sweethearts rooftop made it easy to sit and enjoy a sunday afternoon with a group of friends. read more
