The courtyard was adorable but a little too chilly for us, so we sat inside the cafe which is only a few tables but provides a cozy and fun place for lunch or tea. We shared the chicken sandwich that was made on their homemade bread - yumm. Then we shared their cake bites - an assortment of treats that come with either tea or coffee. All the staff here are super friendly and happy which for me is the most important thing... Their cakes all look great and really homemadey - today I had chocolate biscuit cake - it was yummmm. Its a great place to drink all types of tea. All their teapots are unique and interesting to look at which adds a new dimension to drinking tea. On the third attempt I managed to experience the famous Cake Cafe. Previous attempts ended in disappointment as there was no free tables. Sitting outside, I met a friend for lunch and we both opted for the BLT. I asked for mine toasted. I also went for a home-made lemonade. The BLT was fine, if a bit small, but the lemonade was really excellent. By the time we were finished the place was full up and really really busy, so I opted to go directly to the till to pay to save time. It's cramped inside, I was constantly moving this way and that to let people by as I waited to pay. It is a nice place, especially outside area. But so cramped inside, and I really don't like places that fit in too much into a small space. I would avoid The Cake Cafe when its busy and there are only tables inside. There are other options in the area that are less cramped and serve excellent lunches. Coffee Together springs to mind. I'll be back to try some cake sometime I hear its good. This place has the best location - tucked away in a secret garden behind a stationary/paper store! There are bike racks and tables in the garden so it's easy to access and enjoy. The food is pretty simple and fresh. Their bread is soft and grainy, and absolutely perfect. I had their chicken sandwich- and the bread was the true winner. They also make their own desserts, which are fruity and chocolatey, and all around wholesome! Highly recommend them- I received one for my bday and it had flower petals on top, so hip. The menu is pretty small, but you know when you're eating there, that if its not homemade it's very fresh. It is a GREAT lunchtime spot! read more

Cake café is an unfortunate victim of its own success. Pitching itself as a secret hideaway, it's now permanently busy and it seems the staff cannot cope. It's difficult to get a seat and the service is painfully slow. But the guys are so lovely, you don't mind. Just make sure you don't go here on your lunch break - it's a place to be savoured with friends. I tried going alone with a book once but the customers waiting for tables were a little hostile - I wouldn't recommend trying it! Though I have seen couples reading newspapers on a weekend; that was deigned more acceptable, somehow. Now, I've not got a sweet tooth, but that's not all the cake café has to offer. This is a brunch lover's haven. The home made beans and sausages are divine and the chai latte is a little warm hug in a mug. For a zesty boost, indulge in the fresh mint lemonade. The toast of the day is inspired - I've tried the mushrooms with anchovy butter and the fried banana with bacon concoctions. Both were delicious. It's kitsch, it's a mish-mash and it's fun. The first time I heard about this place was from my sister, and I thought she was lying. The idea that I would go into a paper shop and demand a cake is the sort of thing she would find hilarious, so I was a little dubious coming in here for the first time this weekend. I was hungover, roasting and dying for something tasty to eat, luckily the cafe was not a figment of my sister imagination and I toddled into this little gem. It is a really stunningly beautiful little area, fantastic outside seating area in a quirky raggle-taggle style, and staff were particularly lovely. I got baked eggs and soldiers, which was very tasty, and a very generous pot of tea. The eggs were approximately the temperature of the earths core though, and I'm afraid I docked a star for my burnt mouth! Cute little place tucked down a small otherwise innocuous street. It's definitely cute: there's garden-style seating outdoor, complete with mismatched chairs, dishes and linens. Some of the tables are out in the open, and others tucked under small wooden overhangs. The waiter was friendly and welcoming. Menu is definitely on the small side, but the food was tasty. Not overwhelmingly sweet. We had the cream cheese pancakes (not traditional American-style pancakes, more like what would be called a crepe back home) and they were quite delightful. I'm used to things like that being sweeter... but I enjoyed nonetheless. Cupcake was good too, vanilla. Coffee was decent, nothing to write home about, but satisfying. It was a sunny autumn day so we decided to pay the highly recommended cake cafe a visit. Although kind of hidden it was very busy when we arrived but got served quickly. I had the lemon yogurt cake, which was nice could have been a little more moist. The tea was okay, a clean cup would have made it nicer. We couldn't avail a table outside since it was raining but I'd say it will enhance the experience... Tip: pay a visit to the toilet, it's a whole experience on its own. The decor is the most unique. The selfish, spluttering, miser that I was in the past, had previously besmirched this café's good name because his own bad habit. To quote myself for possibly the first time ever, 'I have to remove one star for the outdoor seating area being a bit too higgledy-piggledy and awkwardly arranged. However, if, unlike me, you're free from filthy habits then this shouldn't be a problem.' If I'd reviewed The Cake Cafe, say, 2 years ago I would've given it a whopping 5 star rating, but recently I've not been too impressed. The food is still delicious, but the service lately has just been incredibly slow. I feel like this wee beaut of a place that I'd become a regular at, has somehow lost it's spark. I live for places with cake as beautiful as this. It's indescribable, it really is. I'll try my utmost best though. The scones are a wonder. They serve them properly with cream and jam (as all scones should be served). The cream is fresh and the jam is delicious. They are a treat for the palate. The brownies are gorgeous; soft and gooey with the right amount of crunch from the nuts in them. They are also served with fresh cream. Any other cakes I've tried there have also been a marvel but it's these two things that stand out for me from their dessert section. I'm unadventurous and generally order the beans on toast when I'm here. They're hearty and they fill the soul up with love for good, solid food. I would recommend them to anyone who likes solid, warming and tasty food. The tea comes in a motley crew of lovely teapots. I don't think I've ever had the same teapot twice. The teacups are darling as well. The place itself is a little cramped if anything but it is very charming with its funky selection of tablecloths. The service is very good too. If you want the best selection of cakes, it's wise to come early in the day. They're so scrumptious that they fly away. This really is a great place and I would recommend to anyone. read more

The staff in this restaurant is extremely rude. They act as if the guests are imposing on them by being there. Our waitress was constantly taking personal calls instead of ordering our food. The coffee tasted bad and the lavender lemonade tasted horrible. Our order came out wrong and the food didn't taste very good. I've only ever tried the lemon and vanilla cupcakes I ordered for a friend's birthday and they were truly scrumptious. This hole in the wall cafe is one of the most interesting and fun places we went to in Dublin. We spent a week in the heart of Dublin, and took the time to walk about 30 minutes to this little hole in the wall cafe, and it was well worth the time and energy. We order cake and tea and it was honestly some of the most delicious tea/cake I've had. Let me also say this place is not a tourist attraction. It's almost 100% locals. I busted out my city map and felt like I was the first tourist to ever go into this place. But the staff and guests were all super nice. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. A lovely spot! I have been meaning to come here for long, but they don't open on Sundays (a very strange tradition that most Dublin cafes follow), and they used to close earlier in the week. Finally came today and was delighted: friendly staff, quiet place, great outdoor seating with bike railings and many plants, nice coffee and a very tasty chocolate and Guinness cake. Great place! A colleague and I went to Cake Cafe to have a ladies lunch. I hadn't been to Cake Cafe in about 6+ months so it was nice to go back there. We arrived early, beating the lunchtime rush and got a table inside. I was tempted by the special hotpot, but when I asked the waitress about salads, she replied that they would be happy to make one up. So the two of us had a mixed leaf salad with chorizo, goat's cheese, sundried tomatoes and grapes. A slice of chocolate cake, a brownie, and two huge pots of moroccan mint and camomile tea brought the bill to a reasonable €25. A lovely lunch! read more

Love the decor and the whole story behind it. However I didn't love my dish the day I went, had mushrooms on toast, which tasted very average. Also had the beetroot and blue cheese tart which was terrible. The blue cheese was far too overpowering for the rest of the flavours. We came across the Cake Cafe after visiting a few different places to have our Wedding Cake made. James was generally quite helpful and we agreed on a multi-tiered cake consisting of different fillings. On this topic we exchanged a few kindly emails just to finalise and confirm details. Between our initial meeting and up to one week before our wedding everything seemed to be going very well. We had agreed on the cake, style, fillings, and the total price. To our surprise, on the week before our wedding James emailed to say that he had increase to total bill by 95 euro. When we queried this we received the following response: Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Apologies for this, your reluctance is understandable however the idea of the set up fee is to cover the baker's wages. I apologise for the over sight on my behalf, I recall discussing the price but obviously overlooked these 2 options. The set up fee is €70.00 as it is a premium service. I hope you can understand our point of view and again my sincere apologies for this oversight. I can offer you the delivery and set up for €40.00 to cover the baker's wages. If you are free I can give you quick call. All the best, James :) Surely the price of a cake should include the cost of the baker otherwise you are just buying ingredients. The whole thing was completely bizarre and was unneeded stress right before the wedding. If we are being cynical, perhaps it was only at that point that they realised the cake was for a wedding...'premium service'...and could charge a bit more. It certainly wasn't for the 'baker's wages'. After a couple of emails we agreed to pay €25 extra for delivery and setup. All settled? At this point there was no ill-will, had been no cross words exchanged between us and everything was settled. Sadly, it seems that they had different feelings. On the day of our wedding the first thing we were told by the wedding coordinator when we arrived at the hotel (Killashee House, BTW, amazing service!!) is that the Cake Cafe had simply dropped the cake off and had refused to setup the cake. Needless to say, this was unbelievably upsetting and distressing. If not for the remarkable help and planning from the staff at Killashee House this could have been a disaster. Thankfully they had come up with a solution and setup the cake themselves. It was not how we wanted it but there was no alternative. The Cake Cafe had let us down tremendously and put the staff at Killashee House in a really rubbish and awkward situation. Once again, sadly, the bad news was not over. When we actually saw the cake it was not as we had agreed or as advertised on their website, Summer berry cake a naked cake with no icing. It had instead a smear of icing on it (I believe to cover up the fact it was slightly burnt). In addition, we had agreed that one of the cakes would be filled with jam and creme patisserie and the other simply creme patisserie. Neither of these were correct - the filling was very poorly done in one (in fact there was barely any filling at all) and the second was just sponge. Both cakes where dense and very mediocre (not what we had tasted previously). It was a complete embarrassment. Even the cooking was uneven as some parts were barely cooked through whereas others were burnt. We ended up throwing out more than half the cake as a result. It was an absolute disaster after paying more than the initially agreed amount. The Cake Cafe should be thoroughly embarrassed at their actions. We had done nothing wrong but question them for adding a significant additional sum onto an already agreed price one week before our wedding. We even agreed to pay more money but apparently this was not sufficient - they also needed to exact some bizarre revenge for questioning their mistake. Honestly, you don't want to do business with people like this. They were nice and friendly to our faces and then did their best to ruin a part of the best day of our lives. First, they increased the price unexpectedly, second they did not setup the cake as agreed, third they did not give us the cake that we had agreed upon, fourth they did not even properly cook they cake that they did deliver, most of which ended up in the bin. Buyers beware! If you think you're about to get a good deal make sure to add on an extra €95. And make sure that you have a wedding coordinator who is quick on their feet and can come up with a good solution when the Cake Cafe plops a pile of sponge down for them to deal with. Most disappointing service we have ever received. We rarely review anyone but felt that this was such a remarkably rude and hateful act that it was important to warn others of our experience. Surely, no one would want anyone to have this happen to them on their wedding day. read more
