I visited Brixton Farmer's Market on a Saturday during a leisure trip to London. I live in Harlem, New York and was wondering about what seemed to be the London equivalent. The market was a very eclectic place to visit with loads of African and Caribbean vendors selling an assortment of jewelry, art and home goods. I'm a big fan of Brixton Market - particularly the covered area known as the Granville Arcade and its indoor maze of fruit and vegetable stalls, butchers, candy shops, vintage clothing stores, hat emporiums, coffee & cake cafes, and more. In my two visits to Brixton Market so far, I drank incredible spicy ginger juice, ate a fried potato-covered chicken drumstick from the Islander Kitchen, purchased a bottle of Brixton Pound sauce with local Brixton currency, watched a bumblebee paint a little girl's face, helped a friend make a finger puppet, observed a bear pushing a blindfolded man on a wheeled wooden contraption, explored a cool store of cardboard, drooled over pizza fresh from the oven, contemplated the purchase of decadent looking cupcakes and homemade Italian dishes, inhaled the enticing smoky scents from a massive blackened oil drum grill lined with jerk chicken, and vowed to return with an empty stomach. Brixton Market is incredibly vibrant and gives you a nice feeling when you walk through it. The place is buzzing, probably due to the reggae music that is pumping out of the stereos from various stalls. Basically, if you want meat or fish, then you should definitely go to Brixton Market. There is such a huge selection provided by an abundance of shops and stalls. The market also offers a good range of fresh fruit and vegetables. The most attractive thing about has to be the selection of African and Caribbean food. For a very reasonably price, you can try some exotic food that you don't see everyday. This is definitely a market that has a lot of urban grit and lacks pretension, something I find really refreshing. read more

I first started shopping at Brixton Market in the mid 1990's when I lived here for a couple of years. I went through a period in the mid Noughties when I was a very infrequent visitor. However, I found that towards the middle of last year, as I realised a significant and what appears to be a sympathetic regeneration was underway, I was being drawn back here whenever I had a free weekend in town. As with all things in Brixton, the scope, location and name of the market is open to all manner of debate, argument and conjecture. In this simple fella's mind, and for the purpose of this short review, I'm talking about the indoor market which is also referred to as the Granville Arcade or more recently Brixton Village. Many of the stalls that I used to frequent over 10 years ago, particularly those selling quality meat and fish, are still here and are as busy as ever. Fresh fruit and vegetables from around the world are still stacked high on many a stall at prices which put the likes of Borough Market to shame. Wild looking folk, and other more sad heart rending people, still wander through the many walkways; muttering dark thoughts and strange prophesies so in many ways it's just like old times and all the better for it. Good food from the yard can still be had from a number of small outlets and my favourite vendor of salt fish patties looks to be doing good business. What has changed in the last couple of years is that a number of new independent ventures have started up. These guys are bringing a more modern; some might say a Shoreditch, artisan vibe to the market. Whatever, I'm loving this attempt to incorporate some new life into this wonderful market and to my old jaded eyes it seems to be bearing fruit. For the urban foodie this is fast becoming the place to go to, with a great selection of small sit down places selling top quality food from around the world. I wandered up the 3 or so miles from Nunhead the other Sunday to catch a movie at the Ritzy to find that not only were a number of stalls on the market open but they were busy, in fact the Federation coffee shop was rammed. To the best of my knowledge the market only ever opened before Monday to Friday and in the day. Sunday opening and in the evening .change soon come? So apart from all the good old school stuff what's new and getting my Brixton Pound: well the amazing Franco Manca pizza joint needs no more publicity, Rosie and her wonderful deli café is already a local legend, and the Federation coffee shop has already had a four star review from me. If truth be told I would just make a visit and see where your mood and senses lead you; plenty of good places for your lunch or dinner which are still to be splashed across the internet!! My ideal thing is to start with a browse around the collectable stalls, check out the tailoring, upgrade the tuneage, grab a coffee, buy some bread and then agonise over where to have lunch before buying some real meat and veg to see me through the week. By then the sun may be setting and who knows what might happen when you stumble out into Electric Avenue or Coldharbour Lane Anyway, I generally walk thorough Borough Market on my way to and from work every day and I like it a lot, but it's not the real deal. If you want an evolving, authentic experience of what's happening in London in terms of music, culture and food I would recommend you jump on the Victoria Line and get yourself to Brixton Market. Some might say it's not for the faint hearted but perhaps that's why we love it .. P.S. When I mention stalls I mean small self-contained spaces which are like a baby shop. We are looking forward to coming to this market. I'd read that it had a lot of different types of food and food vendors. What we found was a lot of the same. A lot of the same type of meat markets, same type of fruit and veg shops. There were a ton of venders selling stuff you'd find at a flea market, designer knock off sunglasses, luggage. We walked the streets of Brixton Market for about 30 minutes and then decided to leave. It was a little bit of a bust because it took about 30 minutes via tube each way from our airbnb. I've fallen for Brixton Market. I'm all gooey eyed. I think it's the best market in London. This has been a strange and slow process. When I first met Brixton Market, I thought "hmm down at heel". I felt uncomfortable. Where are my well painted signs? My comforting downlighters? What IS this thing that they're selling me? But in the two years I lived here I've seen Brixton market's true charms. I want a market where I can get all the worlds vegetables for a pound. Where my lunch can be organic or Columbian, Maderian, bajan, and not aimed a easily seduced tourists. Where a nice man will sell my homemade pickles and I can become an expert on Jamacian Patties. Where I can buy a plastic sock dryer and sourdough bread. Where London's best pizza is next to a chinese supermarket. I want my easy cultural bounderies expanded. Yup, I'm turning down the overblown charms of Borough, and crazy bed eyes of Camden. These were the easy choices of my youth, when all I wanted was style and a cheap good time. I'm sticking with Brixton, a real reflection of life in London. Soon it'll be the last true market left. Best get there quick. read more

It's not fair-- I live here. But it's got everything, and it's brilliant. Client work slow? I'm surrounded with 4/£1 plantains and £3 halal chickens. Feeling adventurous? Leg of goat. Need cheap kitchen (kitschen-- haha, get it?) stuff? This is your place. Grumpy old school sarf london greengrocers, trad-style fishmongers, Premiere League towels, dashikis, you name it... Plus, on Station Road on Sundays there's an organic market. Hint: for cheap organic lamb, come between 12 and 2. I've gotten an £16 leg for a tenner. Just don't tell them I sent you. Funnily enough as busy, and as extensive as this market is, there really isn't that much to say. If you're a market snob, then you will more than likely struggle with it. It's very ethnic, grassroots and feels how I imagine a local community owned market should feel. Personally I think it caters for all needs, you may just have to think a little more creatively about what you really need! However, if perchance you happen to be throwing an emergency Christmas dinner or find yourself hosting an impromptu supper club, you'll find everything you need from the food you will cook, to the utensils that you will use to serve. Not only does the market offer food and larder provisions, you will also find specialist hair accessories (notable for Afro Caribbean), including wigs, extensions and professional sized daily hair care products. In addition to this, there is music, clothing and household staples to be found, all for more than reasonable prices. A word to the wise, don't be afraid to barter. It is a market after all and if you don't ask you don't get. As a first generation Brit, I grew up watching my Africain Mum displaying the art of bartering. As a teenager of course I was mortified, but as an adult, I realise the invaluable skill that have been passed on, a legacy that I too hope to pass on. Plus it's fun! Even if you're no good at it, give it a go anyway, that's what markets are all about. So roll up roll up, there is much to see, play and do! There's not enough words to describe how much I LOVE LOVE LOVE Brixton Market! It's changed sooo much in the 3 years I've lived darn sarf and every time I go back I find a new little coffee shop or restaurant in the village. In the main market the veggies are an absolute STEAL - £1 for 6 peppers, get in! (they're 3 for nearly £2 at the Sainsburys round the corner) Indian, Caribbean, Thai, Chinese etc etc - every time I wander round I get new inspiration for my culinary skills. If you like things on the edgy and urban side then this is the best place to go to in London. Forget the polished terraces of Borough market, this is downright raw, rough, (slightly getto at times) London. Hipsters are taking over and the new wave of restaurants makes it less scary to go there and gives a very interesting array of new things to try. But being a local I'd choose this over any other, much prettier market of London. read more

Brixton market is a maze of little stalls tucked anywhere space will permit throughout the main market street and the nearby surroundings. The market has one main area, but seller's tents spill out like champagne into the nearby sidewalks and streets. The market sells an odd conglomerate of goods from food and batteries to fashion items and music. There's a few stalls that hawk home made goods.. One stand sold Afro-Carribean foods. My sister and I bought a cassava cake from the gentleman running the stand who was as pleasant as a cup of warm tea. The cake was different - something I'd hoped for - and good despite its mush-like consistency. It was fresh and one could taste the sweet oozing with cassava, honey and nuts. The best thing about this market is that it's a "real place". Perhaps this means that, unlike most places, this is not a figment of my imagination. Or, it might mean that this is an unpretentious, comfortable place. Although the produce is not as cheap as my local East Street market, it's still a great place to pick up food goods. read more

You won't be in love with this place instantly. You just won't. If you come here especially for the market, you'll likely be disappointed. Brixton Market grows on you. You'll find that it has everything you need, and everything you don't. The food is incredible too. From jerk chicken stalls to the much loved Franco Manca inside. That's half the charm too - it's got the outside stalls and the inside section. Be sure to explore both. You wont recognise half the vegetables on the West Indian stalls. Ask them what they are. Go home and try them. That's the Brixton Market experience. A true local gem. read more

I've only raced through here while on route to Brixton Academy - heading for the pizza place only to discover lines a mile long (always a good sign, though not so much when you're already cutting it fine for a gig). The market looks amazing, with everything you could want (or imagine). Plus, so far, it seems to have avoided a certain extent of the gentrification you see at Broadway or Borough. Don't get me wrong - I love both of those markets, but it's definitely nice to have the variety. Watch this space for a more complete review when I next get down there. read more

One of the best things about living in London is that you discover something new all the time. Brixton Market is a typical example it must be a good few years since I last wandered down Electric Avenue on market day. It has always been a great place for exotic fruit and veg, but now it has undergone a transformation into something even more special. The covered parts of Market Row and Brixton Village remind me similarly strongly of both Nairobi and Seattle, with their currently very well balanced mix between long-standing food stall holders selling fruit and veg from around the globe (mainly Caribbean), and trendy cafes and eateries. Everyone seems happy, pigs heads and chicken feet sit comfortably next to newly opened artisan delicatessen and gift shops. I love being a tourist without having to board a plane, and there is so much to explore here. And noone seems to mind yet another person pointing a camera during the afternoon I spent here, I spotted two film camera crews, one following us around and listening to us gushing about how beautiful it all is. The market halls have always been here, and I like the fact that they have not been renovated to death. The charme of the new places is that they make do with the space available; exposed pipes and brickwork, flaking paint and faded flags galore. Everything just looks and smells beautifully (well, apart from the fish ), and the prices are very reasonable considering the high quality and trendiness of what's on offer. Most of the bar spaces are tiny and very intimiate and spill out into the avenues al fresco dining even when it's pouring down with rain! Some true streetfood, too, and I loved my mini taco for just £1! I was almost hesitant to write this review as there has been a bit of a hype already fingers crossed, time will now stand still for a while and the magic not be spoilt by overdevelopment. read more

Really cool buzzling area of great little restaurants and cafés mixed in with handicrafts, and world wide goods and groceries. Be sure to check out the surrounding area too. For years I had heard about Brixton being a cool place, but I also used to hear negative things too. Obviously I did not let it stop me from seeing it for myself. A part of London with a strong Afro-Caribbean presence, I enjoyed myself strolling around the market and streets of Brixton. Personally I was expecting to see a hive of Black businesses, but there are not much in comparison to Asian and White owned businesses. I got talking to a man who set up a stall selling organic food and he told me that due to soaring prices, many Black owned businesses that were once there before had been priced out and it's led to a subtle form of gentrification now. Sad really, anyway I bought a bottle of ginger and cucumber juice from him which was amazing. On the way back to the underground station I had two young men calling out to me, but as you brits would say, they were not my cup of tea lol! I also came across some lady preaching in Spanish outside of the underground station and a couple of guys playing steel pans. Brixton is a very lively place with all sorts of characters and I will go back there again upon my next trip to the UK. read more

A very large and lively general market with a focus on Afro-Caribbean goods- the biggest choice of African and Caribbean food in Europe. From goat meat and dried fish to mango, okra and yams. Saturday morning is the best day to go- from 8.30am onwards- when music reverberates around the arches of the railway and the smell of incense fills the air. read more

Love, love, love the store, stalls, and hawkers of Brixton Market. It's the only 6 blocks in London where I don't constently feel like I am getting ripped off. Great place for fresh meat, fish, and veg. You'll be hard pressed to spend more than 20$ for a week's worth of grocery. read more

Brixton market offers great afro-caribbean food, crafts, art etc. I also love going there for lunch where you can get great cuban, nigerian, mexican or carribean food. I love Brixton market. You can walk round and see old people, young people, and every colour, nationality and language under the sun. You can grab a quiet coffee at Rosie's, eat some food at Franco Manca or one of the delis, shop at Secondo. I always admire the fish stalls, but not sure I'd buy anything there! The farmer's market on a Sunday is fantastic too - nice cheese, delicious fresh meat and veggies. Brixton market is just awesome. A great way to spend a few hours on a lazy Saturday, just wandering around and looking at all the weird and wonderful stuff on offer. And everything is dirt cheap (damn it, I really need to get organised and buy my fruit and veg here and not in Tesco!). Not sure I'd have the meat, but everything else looks great. You can get anything from plain haddock to tuna to flying fish in the various fish markets, and of course the fruit and vegetable selection is just fantastic. There's also loads of little shops where you can get everything you need in terms of spices and other exotic goods. I'm bringing my suitcase with wheels next time. read more

Took my mother to Brixton market on Saturday as we both hadn't been there before. I'm with mixed feeling about the place, though. Yes, it has all the stuff you can imagine like fruits, veggies, flowers and even household items, but it was way overcrowded. I bought tomatoes, they were fresh and delicious, and price was cheap, but I'm not too sure it is worth it if you're not from around. read more

It is obvious that this market is for the locals, as there were many grocery stalls; however, the meat and fish did not look fresh and smelled even worse. The graffiti made this area look run-down. Not very lively compared to other London markets. read more

If you don't mind some crowd it is a lively place worth visiting a few times a week to stock your fruit and veg. I prefer the market as the items here seem to be more real and really touched by the sun unlike the ones from supermarket that seem to be picked way before their time and never actually get to ripe. I'm an East London girl (now living In West London) so I don't really have any real reason to venture south of the river. I used to go a hairdressers in Brixton but that was because I would probably go to Mars in search of a decent hairdresser. The hairdressers was located in the middle of Brixton market- a lively place full of 'interesting' characters and stalls selling an eclectic mix of fruit and veg, mobile phones, cheap looking designer knock off clothes, 'bling' jewellery and West Indian food stalls. There are also some interesting shops including quite a few hair shops selling cosmetics, wigs and extensions which hair extensions to create the WAG look- if that's your thing. It reminds me a lot of Dalston's Ridley market. read more

I hate to say this, but all I smelled is fish. Yes, there are funky shops and funky people so it's an interesting place to walk through. But all I smelled was fish! Brixton Market is good for fish. Actually, it's good for everything. I really enjoy getting fresh food from here, but you can also buy items for your home, hair care products, mobile phones, clothes - anything you can imagine I'm sure someone sells it in here. Brixton Market is really magical. It has a lot of energy. It is constantly buzzing and the shops on the back roads connected to random shopping centres then back out to Coldharbour Lane are like little realms to magical places. Brixton Market is great for fresh food supplies, fish fruit meat all available and fantastic. The only problem I have is getting it all home, once the wife has packed out the car there is only room left for the driver so I have to hot foot it home on the bus LOL :) read more

Brixton Market is a revelation, a fantastic place to go for a stroll and pick out a bargain or two. Hundreds of stalls, selling all sorts, from clothes and shoes at knockdown prices, budget cleaning products, arts and crafts, carpets, flowers, the lot. The best part of it for me is the food stalls. I haven't had the guts to opt for some of the more extreme cuisine, such as the saltfish, but the vegetable shops of which there are many, keep our house stocked with cheap vegetables, masses of peppers or aubergines or whatever for a pound. Never will I buy veg from sainsburys again. read more
