Where is the 10 Star button!? I had an idea I wanted to try and pull off during this self Quarantine that we are all dealing with. We usually do a happy hour once a month with some industry professionals and since we can't be together was looking to do something different. I started researching sommeliers as I was wondering if there was a way we could pull off a winetasting event with everyone in their own homes. I ran across Patrick Ney and gave him a call and he was all about the idea and wanted to jump on board and make it happen. He put it all together including finding the two wines and where to get them at the best price. We are both in different parts of California and he actually sent me to the store that was literally 2 miles from my house making it so easy. Once we had the wine he walked us through all the steps and all we did was provide the wine, invite the people, provide a zoom link, and prepare everyone for a great time! We did our part and on the night of the event Patrick took over and it was an awesome event!! Everyone loved it and not only did he pick out two excellent wines, but he walked us through each one giving us so much history (even maps on where the wines are from) and appreciation of what it was all about. I have a whole new outlook and this is all thanks to Patrick and he and I figuring out how to pull this off! I highly recommend this experience! My friends and I purchased a LivingSocial deal, and it turned out to be even better than I had anticipated. The LS deal was labeled as "wine and comedy" so I was thinking it was like a typical wine tasting with a comedy show. I wasn't exactly sure how that would work out. When we arrived, however, I was pleasantly surprised. Little round tables were set up in a semi-circle for 2 people each. We were given ice water, sheets of paper to take tasting notes, and there was fruit and cheese as well. We tried 5 different wines, but this was not your typical wine tasting. Pat is very knowledgeable and the tastings were all blind tastings. I LOVED this. He provided us with tons of information and was happy to answer questions. He was funny and easy going. I had only done regular wine tastings, where they tell you what you're going to try and what it's going to taste like. In this scenario, however, we were asked what we smelled and what we tasted. We learned the different wine regions of the world and then were able to make educated guesses about what it was we were trying. In total, it was about an hour and a half long. We went on a Saturday, so there was tons of traffic for the Santa Monica Farmer's Market. I recommend garage parking, because the 1-hour meter spots won't be long enough. Now let me tell you this; this is such a great fun way to learn about wine! Classes in general can be quite boring, but not how Patrick teaches them. With his winning combination of being a comedian and a sommelier, there's no way that you can't have a great time while learning. As others have stated, it's a great introductory class, but anyone at any level can truly benefit from the class. My favorite part was actually at the end of the class, where we were all asking him questions. He gave his opinion and experiences on where to buy wine, wine tastings, storing and serving wine etc... This was fun. Patrick is knowledgeable about wines and is very engaging in front of a group. He teaches a beginners level approach to wine evaluation which is a good place to start for anyone who drinks the stuff. The one hour class was too short, and I would have liked it to be longer in order to learn more. If you attend the event in Santa Monica, give yourself time for traffic and parking. Both suck. The five wine sampler helps ease that pain though. This is a fun event to do with friends. read more

I hosted a party at my house and decided to have The California Wine Guy be the entertainment. Amazing night! Everybody was included in a really funny and surprisingly informative presentation on wine. We all got to do blind tastings and learned about wine without all the pretentiousness that usually accompanies such events. It was so easy. He brought the wine and set the whole thing up.
