I remind them they have choices and can go to any school yet they insist on staying at museum until they graduate. We have seen many staff changes over the years but the core values seem to carry on. During my search, I stumbled across the Museum School, and it looked a little too good to be true. I also noted that they historically had a waitlist, so I was pretty sure it was going to be a no-go. I called anyway, and as it turns out, they had an opening in my child's grade level. I made an appointment for a tour. Every staff member I met, from the director to the office admin to each instructor, was friendly and welcoming. The kids looked and sounded happy. It was reassuring that my bright, school-loving child would be having fun, engaging in activities like fitness and art and music, but also be appropriately challenged with a good curriculum. This is not a self-led program, it isn't play-only--it's actual instruction with plenty of room to enjoy learning and discovery. To me, having come from a family of educators at the grade and high school levels, this marries the best of both worlds. It is both academic and hands-on, and my young child even has homework, but it isn't excessive. The kids actually get outside in the fresh air to play, and I have been welcoming the dirt on my little one's socks as a sign of a day well spent. I took time to actually read through the parent handbook, which I have done for each school we've been part of. Nowhere have I seen as thorough a section on what constitutes appropriate behavior between staff and students, and how both should feel empowered to address situations that feel inappropriate--I was absolutely floored, and my inner teen had a moment of healing and validation reading through the text. It brought an additional sense of peace around the decision we made to enroll here. This is a diverse staff and campus, with a diverse representation of humans who trust them with their children. I look forward to seeing how this school will positively impact mine.

In our 2 years there, we watched our son grow immensely in his confidence, relationships, and overall love of learning. He was sad to leave school every day and excited to wake up and start the day with his amazing friends and teachers. The approach and philosophy that Fleur de Lis takes truly allows each child to blossom in their own unique and beautiful way and we not only got to experience this with our son, but saw it with his classmates as well. We saw our son make presentations to his class about a science or art project he did with us at home or proudly present his show and tell Spider-man toy to his classmates - we are so grateful to the entire Fleur de Lis community for encouraging this level of self-esteem and individuality.  The staff at Fleur de Lis is truly one of a kind -  the professional, yet individualized attention of Tina Smith and April Kozelh as directors is amazing. They know your child personally and do everything in their power to make your child's experience at Fleur de Lis enriching and creative. Our son still talks about Ms. Tina coming into their classroom and reading them special books (his favorite was about an owl in NYC) and Tina consistently shared specific memories of our son's social and emotional growth during his time there. The teachers we had at Fleur de Lis (Ms. Sandy, Ms. Chelsea, Ms. Amber, Ms. Kiara and Ms. Diana for Spanish) were incredible in every way - we appreciated the attention to the holistic needs of each child - the cognitive, physical, and emotional were all given attention and we saw our son blossom in each area. The day our son "graduated" Fleur de Lis School was a bittersweet one - we were thrilled to know he was ready for kindergarten, but also so sad to say goodbye to the daily moments of this special community. Our son couldn't stop hugging his amazing teacher Ms. Sandy at the singing show - clearly showing the same emotions we felt as parents.

I remember my son, Julian, sobbing when I left him on his first day as a two year old, and my heart was breaking. In less than a week, he was all smiles at drop off, excited to see his teachers and friends. Since then, he's thrived at this school, both emotionally and educationally. Now, two years later, he's heading to Francis Parker, and looking back on his time at FDL, I can't express how grateful I am to the amazing team there. There are a few specifics that make FDL special: The community -- everyone at FDL knows Julian's name, even teachers who aren't assigned to his class. Pre-Covid, when I would pick him up from his classroom, his daily departure was like a little parade, with waves and goodbyes to friends, teachers, directors, everyone. You really feel like part of a family here. Kira, Bev, April, Julie, Julia, Diana, Iris, Nina, Autumn, and many others...each has been a unique and positive impact on Julian and our family over the past two years. The safety -- speaking of Covid, I don't think I appreciated how nice it is to have total confidence in the efforts of the FDL team to keep my child safe at all costs until this pandemic. When they reopened under new safety guidelines, I never once worried they would slack or not keep the sanitation and safety bar high. In fact, Julian now inspects my hand washing and admonishes me if I have not made enough soap bubbles or washed long enough . They always ran a tight ship, but it's exceptional now. The positive reinforcement of high expectations -- on my visit prior to enrolling at FDL, I saw all the kids eating lunch as they chattered politely and consistently used manners. On the playground, no one pushed. They all took turns. What's more, they were still incredibly joyous little kids, giggling and delighting in silly play. I was in awe. And yet, now Julian models those same behaviors. FDL teachers are kind and warm, but firm. They set a high bar, and the kids rise to meet it. At the same time, there is tremendous fun had on the daily at this school. Julian greets me at pick up with a big smile and a hug, his cheeks flushed from play and sand in his shoes. He excitedly shows me his projects and tells me funny stories and things he learned from the day. FDL is exceptional. If you have the chance to send your child there, take it. You would be hard pressed to find a more loving and capable setting. We will miss it terribly!

The students who I've met here are some of the most intelligent, friendly, and resilient high schoolers I know, and everyone on staff is wonderful. Over the years, Reality Changers has proven that it is much more than a non-profit program. I have volunteered as a tutor and mentor since Spring of 2008 (back when I was still a student at UCSD) and it has been extremely rewarding seeing the students grow and mature into responsible citizens and adults. The weekly program consists of S.A.T. test preparation, an insightful lesson, a delicious homemade dinner (which is five stars for sure! not every volunteer gig you do feeds you!), and then 1.5 hours of study time. During this time, you are paired up with a small group of students which makes it easier to connect with the students. Reality Changers has even had inspiring guest speakers such as politicians, leaders in the San Diego community, and university officials. With the help of the supportive and encouraging staff and volunteers, these inner-city youth from San Diego become the first in their families to attend a four-year university.. and not only do they defy all statistics against them to get ACCEPTED, these students earn scholarships to go to schools such as Duke, Harvard, Dartmouth, USC, UCLA, and more. This truly shows how Reality Changers is more than just a program that helps high school students. It gives teens who never might have had the chance an opportunity of a lifetime and I am happy and blessed to be a part of it. It is amazing what a few hours a week can do to transform a student's life. This organization is unlike place I've ever volunteered at because they really make everyone who is a part of the program - whether you're a tutor, a parent, a volunteer, or a student feel like part of the RC Family. Also, tutors come from very diverse backgrounds - there are many college students (from UCSD, SDSU, PLNU, etc), professionals from the community, retired adults, and more who are all invested in helping inner city students from San Diego be the first in their families to go to college.

Our…read morechild attended for almost a full school year, but we were dis-invited to re-enroll for the summer or next year. I really appreciated how careful this school is about the kids health, and how steamlined their check-in, check-out process was. I think it avoids a lot of potential pitfalls of drop-off. Their space is amazing, and they have a ton of enriching and vigorous play options. From what I heard from my child, I think circle time was great too. So many of the teachers are extremely warm and caring. However, the school was very poor about communicating with us. After a couple of months of attendance, we got a phone call where the director suggested our child might need a one-on-one aid for emotional-behavior issues. We were extremely surprised, caught off guard, and devastated. We took the phone call to heart and worked extra hard with our child. The same issues came up during the parent teacher conference a little while later, and we worked with the staff to implement some of their suggestions. After this, we attempted to communicate much more frequently with the school to make sure we were on the same page about our methods, our progress, etc. Many of our emails were ignored entirely, even as we were trying to schedule a meeting to check in. When we were finally able to scheduled a meeting, it was to tell us that we were not invited to re-enroll. I think it is fairly common for preschools have more formal processes for working with parents to identify strengths and challenges, share strategies for working on challenges, and provide progress reports. That was not our experience here. What is even more perplexing is that according to several professional medical and behavioral health opinions we have gotten, in part due to this feedback from the school, our child is pretty normal for her age. What's more concerning is that we were not the only family expelled during our time there, and we were not the only family to whom diagnosis and intervention was flippantly suggested (that is, without any kind of formal or licensed assessment). And to our knowledge these other children were also very much in the normal range of behavior and development. To their credit, they waved our obligation to complete our payments for the year and refunded our deposit, though not the $600 yearly materials fee. And as I mentioned above, there are numerous positive aspects to the school. We've been at another preschool now for six months and our child has been thriving. No complaints from the staff, who have been extremely communicative. It's hard to know, in the end, what went wrong. It could have been a developmental mismatch (perhaps our child should have been in the younger class), or a mismatch between teacher/child personalities. In the end, what is very clear is that the communication was lacking. Other notable aspects of this school are that it is half-day with hours between 8a-12pm (optional additional lunch time on a few days from 12-1p), and with a low child / teacher ratio.

The whole staff is very sweet, every (T/Th) morning Stacey, Lynn, and Emily greet the kids and engage them in whatever new craft or science experiment is out (unless the kid isn't ready in which case, they hold them or give them just enough space, no pressure to conform). Every week has a very thoughtful theme, including books, music, toys, and hands-on activity like hatching chicks or planting a garden. This is not daycare, this is intentional nurturing and development. All of the teachers are very well versed in positive discipline and what is age-appropriate. I felt like I was leaving my child with family, not strangers and not folks who are just performing a job. The teachers really love kids, and celebrate the differences that make each kid unique. I never saw even a hint of fatigue or grumpiness. The space is clean and safe, the snacks are healthy. We feel very lucky that we got to spend time here.

Take these reviews with a grain of salt... I attended TJSL from 2016-2019 and graduated cum laude. My experience was positive overall. Many of my professors were quite good. Individuals with impressive resumes and skill at teaching complex legal doctrines. The problem with TJSL is its admissions standards (or lack there of). However, while that is TJSL's biggest problem, it is also something I respect. I decided to go to law school on a whim and took the LSAT with little preparation. Unsurprisingly, I did not score high. But, I decided to apply for TJSL anyways because I had a friend who was already a student. I was admitted. From that point, everything was very positive with my experience. TJSL gave me a shot and I seized upon the opportunity. I learned a great deal and was given the tools I needed to pass the bar exam on my first try with flying colors. The only reason I did not give TJSL a 5 star review is due to the campus. The problem with TJSL is not the staff nor the curriculum. The problem is the lazy and incompetent student body. If you want to succeed in law school and in the practice of law, you must actually MAKE AN EFFORT to do so... So many of my fellow TJSL students treated law school as an extension of college, where you can simply go through the motions and still manage to pass your classes. This is not how it works in law school, and those who do this are in for a rude awakening with the bar exam. You must attend your classes. You must complete the reading assignments. You must engage in thoughtful discussion during class. You must study diligently for exams. IF you do these things, you will find success. If you skip class and put forth a half-assed effort, you will only find disappointment. It is apparent from many of these reviews that a lot of my fellow students did not make the necessary efforts to succeed and are now looking to point the finger elsewhere. I would not say TJSL is a "great" school, but it is most certainly a fair and adequate school where anyone can find success if they actually utilize the tools provided to them. I am sorry to see what has become of TJSL and its relationship with the ABA, but I wish all the best to the staff and students.
