My first visit here was for a class on photographing the illuminated Downrigging tall ships at…read morenight. The staff members were all extremely warm and friendly, and the building is lovely and welcoming. After the class I spent at least half an hour looking at the small collection of wonderful local art. Great place to shop for work featuring the schooner Sultana or local wildlife, as well as beautiful jewelry and fine woodworking.

You would never know it was there--I passed by it the first time and didn't notice it. Then on my way back, I saw it, but it looked closed. I just tried the door and it was open so I went in. I found some awesome historical and picturesque postcards for $0.50! They also have a museum of Baltimore in the back that is entry by donation.

The jewelry center offers classes, workshops and studio space to both new and established designers. As you walked into the center's gallery, you could admire the creative work of some of the jewelers. The work was intricate and lovely. They were having a class when we were there, so we only peeked into that room. They do offer space for anyone who wants to create beautiful jewelry. It was an interesting stop on Doors Open Baltimore.

I can't believe it but I've taken four classes here, three weekend workshops and then a longer…read moremulti-week intensive. I had heard about this place on WYPR and thought it might be interesting. The most I'd ever done regarding jewelry is stringing beads - really creatively, mind you! But what they're teaching here is well beyond that and geared to getting you to a much more professional level of craft. I had never worked at such a mini scale. When I signed up for the first class, a weekend workshop with a guest teacher from out of town, I thought it was a bit pricey. But the amount I learned, and the new challenges I faced and overcame with the help of the teacher, was really amazing. The second weekend workshop was more theory and discussion than hands-on, so I wasn't as jazzed, and in reality, I didn't learn as much. The third class I took was the 12-week Intro to Metals and Jewelry with teacher Jenn Parnell. It also was amazing! She is patient, organized, and thorough! The three projects were challenging but engaging. I watched all the students, including myself, become frustrated (during the soldering phase) but then make the leap into the ease of having somewhat-mastered a new skill. My fourth class was a weekend workshop on stone setting with Erica Bello. We learned four setting techniques and I was surprised that we were able to get to each one - and produce samples of each technique. It was very cool! The studio is professionally equipped, well maintained, and safe. The environment is mostly adult - though a couple times when I went in outside of class time, there were students who were behaving like high schoolers... Luckily, the space is large enough that you can just move to a bench further away. The two studio managers, April and Erica, are helpful and professional. Instructors are both well informed and inspiring. A couple things I think they should do are have a quick orientation of the space and point out what is where, explain studio rules, and perhaps have all these things on handouts. My first class, I was the only newbie, and everyone else had their own tools and was very familiar with the BJC - I felt VERY much like an outsider with an unfair disadvantage. Another thing, it would be great if we students could work with unlimited time for the very last class day - a win-win for all. Students get their projects (closer to) finished and the BJC gets happy students. A great resource for Baltimore - more people should be taking advantage of this local gem!

Shelves organized well and filled with books keep going, pouring into other rooms filled with treasures. There are nooks to sit and read. To test the quality of sections, I found the travel section and discovered the best variety of guide books anywhere. They even had a book to explore Kazakhstan!

Needed a solution for my mother who is 80 y/o, 5ft nothing with an injured knee. Her bed was too…read morehigh for her to get in to. Went in looking for a low profile mattress but his suggestion worked so much better and way less expensive. He suggested getting rid of box spring and put the mattress on a bunky board. There weren't any in stock at the Kohl Ave store so he called around to find me one. Wow!! Thanks to him my mom can now comfortably get in & out of bed.

I had my wife join me on Good Friday, which also happened to be 1st Friday as well. We headed downtown and parked early and decided to grab a bite to eat at the Old Mill Market & Cafe prior to the event starting. After that we wandered from shop to shop, art gallery to art gallery, and Realtor to Realtors office. As we enjoyed a very pleasant evening perusing arts, crafts, souvenirs, and ogled at ads for properties far above and beyond our financial grasp. Most of the shops offered free (yup you heard right.... FREE) wine and appetizers to those that came to visit. On 1st Fridays you are allowed to wander with glass in hand from shop to shop sipping and enjoying your beverage of choice (wine, beer, or sodas). Even the local Rita's Italian Ice place gets in on the action and set up a stand on High Street downtown to hand out free ices. Now we both had a blast, and we were told that this Friday was a more subdued event because it was Easter Weekend, but that the next month there would be a lot more to see and do. The town goes all out and puts together a great event. This is a great date night event for you and that special someone!!! Leave the kids home, enjoy a nice dinner here in town, wander around and relax in the quiet & quaint atmosphere of this historic town. Take a stroll by the river, enjoy a bottle of wine at Play it Again Sams, or a drink at the Fish Whistle. You might even find Andy somewhere here in Mayberry too...LOL!!!
