In town for our son's military graduation and we found this little gem! Originally, I wanted to get the fish & chips, but ended up getting the ribs and I'm SO happy I did!! Their meats are slow cooked for 16 hours and the meat literally slipped right off the bone! They offer different sauces, but I ended up going with the Tavern Classic, which is the typical Sweet Baby Ray's (which I like). The beer battered fries were deliciously crispy! Daughter got a BYOB burger and onion rings and was very happy! The onion rings had the right amount of batter and super crunchy! Husband got the steak sandwich, which is more or less a Philly cheesesteak, and sweet potato tots. Enjoyed every last bite of the sandwich and the tots were also nice and crispy. Inside this grungy rough around the edges looking bar is some real incredible Carolina BBQ! Let's start with the ambiance. It wasn't too loud when we went but I imagine once it fills up and the arcade games get going it can get very loud. There are a lot of TV screens all around and tables of varying heights. There is also a nice fish tank Service was fast and excellent. We went around 130pm on a Saturday so there wasn't too many people inside. We were able to talk and have a discussion without having to talk loudly or shout. The food was top tier. Wife got the ribs and wings. She was literally pulling the bones right out of the ribs, that's how tender they were. The wings were fried and had a nice sticky sweet sauce which was a great contrast to the crunchy salty texture of the wings. I got the big pig sandwich, which was also amazing. Pulled pork on top of a piece of fried ham and topped with bacon and cheese. It was great. We will definitly be putting this restaurant into our usually rotation, especially when we want some great BBQ. read more

Quiet enough to talk but not dead to what's going on - food was decent - would recommend to travelers

So we've been here four times now and it's time to review Carolina Tavern! So off the rip I'll say I think this is our home base in our new neighborhood. The menu, anchored by barbecue items, is wide and the prices somehow seem to have escaped inflation that we've seen over the past few years. I feel like sometimes they make up for it with smaller portions, but seriously, how much bar food do we all really need to be eating? Anyways, the sandwiches and burgers are pretty good, but tonight I found out that wings are why I'm gonna be coming here from now on. They remind me of the wings from Three Dollar Cafe in Atlanta, and that is definitely a good thing. All told, Carolina Tavern is a good local place to grab lunch, dinner or a couple of beers and we'll definitely be back frequently. read more

After basically getting kicked out of Buffalo Wild Wings because of a "kitchen issue", we came to the Carolina Tavern & I'm glad we did! They were busy but the waitress came over right away to greet us. The menu is huge & there's something for everyone. I got the fish & chips & they were delicious! I did not have a good experience. The bartender had an attitude problem. She was rude and inattentive. The beer was served at slightly below room temp. Floors were sticky and the entire establishment had an stale/unclean smell. I would not recommend this establishment there are much better restaurants/bars in the area. We ordered takeout from here for lunch and the sandwiches were really good, so I decided to try dine in. We were here on a Friday night and it was busy and very loud (may not want to go when it's busy, if you have hearing problems.) We ordered a Barrel burger, cheese burger with bacon and 2 chicken fingers covered with wing sauce and a Tavern burger, cheese burger with BBQ sauce, bacon and onion rings. Our order came out in about 15 minutes. Both burgers were tasty and cooked to medium. The fries were crispy and the sweet tea was good. My wife had a mixed drink with pineapple and rum (I don't recall the name of it) but she said it was very good and not overly strong. I don't usually read the reviews until after I post mine, but these reviews seemed to be one extreme or the other, so I did read some of them before this posting. Both my experiences here have been positive and the food is what I would expect from a beer and sandwich bar. It's casual dining, casual food and really good prices. The food even smelled old so being the person I am I decided to let the waitress know we'd like to send it all back and we'd pay for our drinks. She then went on to say she had to call her manager. After 10 minutes of waiting the manager finally arrived... she told us they couldn't take the food off the tab after it comes to the table lol!!! She offered to REMAKE the food instead!! I have been here two times while visiting my brother who lives in area. First time was terrific. I have their onion rings and fish and chips. Both were fantastic. Second time was absolutely gross. I order same thing and both were nothing but mushy food due to grease. My wife threw up later that night from the food. The service on last visit was slow and horrible. We had to find waitress to request check. Slow service with an attitude. My brother said last few times food and their service has been horrible and they won't go back. Food was filling and great. They have a little something for everyone . I ordered the fish and chips which came out piping hot and my husband had the chili cheese fries. The wait to get the food was a bit excessive . It took over 45 mins for our food to come to our table. The second time we went I ordered the mushrooms and zucchini appetizer. They came out looking great but we're very greasy when we bit into them. We also ordered the garlic parm fries which are meant to be eaten there as they get soggy in the to go container. My go to place for wings & cold beer. Big selection of sauces and you get to split the flavors. Always get seated quick & the service is pretty good. TV's everywhere so there's always a game to watch while you enjoy your meal. There's a bar area that's sufficiently far enough from the table seating that the kids can't hear adults talk, and there's games for the kids to play. Prices are very reasonable. Negative was no toilet paper in the stall of the women's bathroom. More concerning was the woman bartender who was not wearing a mask. She's working a bar with about 8-10 people around it. Think the establishment is just asking for trouble. read more

Wow! The menu is extensive with plenty of options to choose from. This is definitely a tavern/bar feel but there is plenty of seating for those just looking for a good meal. Highly recommend the chips and beer cheese, ribs, and the flatbreads. First time coming here, and upon first impression, I had high hopes. The appetizers our group of 5 had were great and came out quickly. It was not a busy evening, even for a Saturday evening. We then placed our dinner orders, which consisted of two burgers, two wing orders and a wrap. After an hour, though probably more like an hour and a half, we still had not received our dinners. Eventually, our server came back. I inquired about our food order, as we had watched other tables arrive after us and receive their orders. Some had already left. The response I received was simply that the kitchen was just slammed with orders, including takeout. Normally, I could probably understand this. But our server never informed us of any delays, and the appetizers had come out quickly. Coincidentally, a few minutes later our food arrived. The burgers were lukewarm and were most certainly not fresh off the grill. The chicken wrap was noticeably not fresh, as the inside of the wrap (visible from where it was cut) was dry. Like, leave a wrap out for the last hour dry. The wings. I have never had wings I didn't like. These were dry and chewy. Most of us who tried them couldn't finish them. I typically will not judge any business on a few faults. I focus on how you fix or adapt to the faults. One thing I can not get past is excuses. Excuses is what we were fed tonight, along with dry, cold food. I really wanted to enjoy this restaurant, and maybe other days it exceeds expectations, but I for one cannot day that I will be returning. read more

We kept seeing Carolina Tavern as we drove out Ribaut Rd. and always said we should try it out. So, when there was a "dealsaver" coupon available, we bought one and went to see how good they are. We were very pleasantly surprised to find a nice, clean joint. My wife had a blue Burger and I went with a pulled pork sandwich. I got the salad bar because I love all the makin's put out for you to use. Both Sandwiches were wonderful and the salad bar was perfect (see photo) except no garbanzo beans. My wife said the fries aren't as good as some other places in town, but were OK. If you are a wine drinker. This is your place! a nice pour of house chardonnay is $2.50! This is not a miss print. We liked it enough that my wife got a dealsaver as well and we went back for some ribs. They were as good as any I've had. we shared a full slab and added a second salad bar & ended up taking a little less then half of the ribs home. They are also good left over. ***One of the go-to places in Beaufort *** The location is such a unique area being across from the fire station and Port Royal sign. The atmosphere, to me, seems low key. I'm sure it gets mad during the evenings with all the sports stations on TV. I've only had their wings, and Ale grave fries. They were fantastic. The soup and salad bar is good. But, nothing too entirely special. But, who cares? It's a friggin' soup and salad bar. The staff, here, is pretty friendly. They seem like the people who you'd get to know on a regular basis just like Cheers. My only beef is how slow the service is. I've come here twice in a week (one being a luncheon for a fellow Shipmate's going-away, and the next on a lunch date). Both times I came here, it was not busy at all. As a matter of fact, we were the only group in. But, our food took almost an hour to come out (and most of us ordered wings). This happened twice in a week. Decent bar food, despite poor service. The Carolina Tavern has lots of TVs, good for watching sports. I ordered the fried pickle burger. I like fried pickles. I expected fried pickle slices but I got deep fried pickle spears. Kinda hard on a round burger. The burger itself was of decent size. My spouse ordered the pulled pork barbecue sandwich. It was very tasty. All in all the food was good. The service mid day, on the other hand, was poor. It wasn't that crowded but our server struggled. He forgot to bring us utensils. Instead of French fries, which I ordered, I got mashed potatoes. My spouse was supposed to get coleslaw. We had to ask for it. Either the young man was new or just confused. I ordered from them through DoorDash this evening. Steak and Cheese Sub and a Burger. In the instructions box I put no onions or peppers. Steak, cheese and mayo only. I had to throw my sub away. It was loaded with onions, peppers and no mayo. The burger was missing it's side. Thankfully, DoorDash issued a partial refund.
