Terrible accessibility . No accessible parking. Stairs to get in, and their accessible side entrance stays locked. They had no keys so we had to wait outside in the heat, with the temp being over 100, for 15 minutes until someone could come unlock it. Attended a corporate dinner event. Chef Janos was very knowledgeable about local/native foods and the history of them. The servers were excellent and very attentive to our large group. They were not aware that I would require a vegetarian meal, and even though I told them I would be fine with what was already out, they assured me they would serve me. They delivered on that promise. Went there a month or so ago for their cooking class for Valentine's Day. It was really cool watching them prepare everything. It was Janos, his sous chef, and the pastry chef. They were really receptive to questioning all throughout the prep, even if it had nothing to do with the ingredients they prepped. The four stars come from the fact that I wasn't a huge fan of the final meal we got served. But I would definitely go to a cooking class again. One warning - if you're used to eating dinner between 5:30 and 6 like me eat a snack before going! We didn't get served until about 8 and I was so hungry! read more

I attended the first cooking class on 2/27 with Chef Janos himself. The focus was on a locally sourced menu, noting Tucson's new City of Gastronomy designation. The first item prepared was corn off the cob in a fried tortilla and samples were passed after. Then, he demonstrated chorizo chiliquilles, a tepary bean and cholla bud salad (currently on the menu at DC&K) and a chile relleno. After the demonstration, we were seated and served a sample of each of the items with a pour of wine. The space is beautiful, and available for private events as well. We came here a couple of months ago for the "dim sum and then some". We liked it enough to come back yesterday with other friends. Although the dishes all sounded great, none were memorable and the dim sum wasn't at all tasty or memorable. The special drinks were watery and the service was hurried even though the restaurant was only a little more than half full for the hour that we were there. I think Janos had a great idea, but it is not working. We will not be back. read more

The Carriage House - Cooking Schools Near Me - Tucson, Arizona

I've been there twice, both for dinner, once in 2018 (there are no other 2018 reviews) and once in 2019. The first was a charity dinner with many people paying over $100, some of which went to charity. The second was a corporate function with each head costing $75 or so. You should know that Carriage House has a banquet kitchen that can keep things cold, hot, or reheat them. It is not a full restaurant kitchen! The food is prepared next door at chef Wilder's real restaurant. At the first event the air-conditioning was undersized or some units were not on. The staff kept lowering the thermostat setting, unaware that when the unit can't 'satisfy' the requested temperature, lowering it more does nothing other than annoy those of us who see you doing nothing useful. At the second event the room was still a bit warm but the staff did not turn the air-conditioning units on at all. The tables had been arranged in a pattern I can't really describe... it's like they threw out frisbees into this large room (and it IS a large room) and there they landed they put out an eight-top. The dishes were brought out by banquet servers, not professional restaurant servers. ONE dish per hand, usually on both hands. That's right, no stacking of dishes, only serving two customers per trip back to the banquet (think "keeping warm and reheating") kitchen. The service order was random. At one point the ladies were served first -- this is correct. At another point the dishes were brought out and one side of the table was served first, ladies and gentlemen, and at another all but one of us were served and then the server went off to other tables. Neither the plates (nor the table) had any form of sauce, dressing, or condiment. The meat was free from sauce, etc. There were two different fish dishes but not more than a dab of sauce underneath. There was no bread nor was there butter. We can all avoid the carbs, but that should be our choice. The food, being reheated was lukewarm, prepared all to the same temperature ("medium+"), and of no significant quality that stood out. The fish appeared to have come from a frozen batch, evident since all the orders were the same size, shape, and consistency. Unless you're running your own fish processing plant you'd never get this uniformity... unless... you bought frozen. Now with all that over two dinners you might ask well why did we come back a second time, and why not leave. The servers. Their attitude was remarkably cool, calm, and professional. While they only carried two plates at a time, they didn't drop them. They delivered the right food to the right people. They kept waters filled (chef Wilder doesn't provide bussers at these events) and plates cleared and were as prompt as they could be given the two-plate at a time constraint. They smiled, they engaged in conversation, and when one of our guests said she couldn't eat the [I forget what] they found her a substitute asap. My recommendations: 1. Don't go in the heat of summer. The cooling system is inadequate and cannot keep up. 2. When you preorder your food or order your food remember it's not "made on site" so use the same criteria as if you'd order something delivered from a restaurant with a 40 minute delivery time. Fried foods will be soggy. Saucy foods may have the sauce separate or get sopped up by other foods. 3. Expect to wait a long time. Be patient. If that's not what you're thinking that night, don't go. I love dim sum and I love how restaurants are trying to take a modern spin on traditional foods. With that said, despite my desire to want to love this place, I was very disappointed. I love the concept of the dim sum and the description on the website described it as having dishes from everywhere. However, the execution was poor... Traditionally, dim sum is comprised of smaller dishes that are about $2 to $4 each. It makes it really awesome to be able try a bunch of things. As a result, I was disappointed to find that Carriage House's non-traditional approach wasn't just different styles of food, but a drastic increase in price. The cheapest dish was $5, then increasingly went to $7, $9, $12, and $16. As you can imagine, it was incredibly easy to rack up a huge bill without realizing it. This is in part because they present the dishes without telling you anything about the price. I personally have a problem with this only because the prices are so high...It just seems misleading to me. We didn't even get that much and racked up $60 without alcohol, dessert, or tip. In addition, the types of foods presented were not representative of the description their website posted. All of the dishes were mostly Asian inspired. I think the only thing that I saw that wasn't was a Jamaican banana dessert. Also, there were only 4 carts going around with different things, but they didn't come around very often. We often had to ask yo see the carts. They were also only replenishing the carts all at the same time...So, it wasn't uncommon for all the carts, except the alcohol one, to be off the floor at the same time. It's hard for me to judge this because logistically, I understand the shortcomings from a business perspective. You don't want to make a lot of a $12 or $16 dish only to not sell it. But some of these foods were not good for sitting around until someone wants it. It made the food, hot or lukewarm, not taste or look worth the price you Overall, the cooking was good. The flavors are good. The food choices are just not optimal for a dim sum style food. I would go back to eat, but not for dim sum. A regular sit down meal with a menu would be good here, so you can get good, hot food and know what you're paying. read more

Go on line and try the new takeaway dinner menu. We've had meals 2 weekends in a row. We love the nontraditional salads (no lettuce). Last week the catfish and the pork sugo were great. This week the Persian eggplant and jerked pork were great. The Persian eggplant was an awesome mix of spices and even a touch of heat from the cinnamon. Great balance! The dark chocolate and jalapeno ice cream last week was a real hit too. We're not ready to dine at restaurants yet, so this is a fantastic option for superb dining at home. read more

Do not come here if you're familiar with the flavors of traditional dim sum. The staple dish of dim sum is shu mai and they some how managed to get it so wrong! There was SO much ginger in the ground pork that it tasted like a gyoza and the wrappers were watery and thin unlike the thicker yellow wrappers that Chinese restaurants use. The har gow (shrimp dumplings) were okay but the shrimp was ground too finely so the texture was weird compared to traditional har gow made with chopped shrimp. The rest of the dim sum dishes that were offered seemed like fusion dishes, which was not what I want for dim sum. Why is someone going to order delicate dumplings and then ruin their palette with a heavy Mexican dish like chilaquiles? I was very turned off by the fact that there was too many extra dishes and not enough authentic Chinese food offered. Don't even get me started on the service. Horrible. My boyfriend and I waited so long to even get the first cart to come over. We then had to wait longer for each cart, which seemed to always be out of dishes by the time they got to us. It seemed like they were catering to the older clientele that ordered mimosas and ignored the tables on the side. We had to wait another 15 minutes for our check while servers cleared tables around us (with no one waiting to sit at those tables) or they all disappeared to the back. We finally flagged down the lady that seemed to be the manager and she didn't even ask us how our first experience was. She rushed to get us to pay and then hurried over to the table that was on their 3rd order of mimosas. We attended the Chinese New Year dinner at the Carriage House on Feb 3, 2017. Janos Wilder graciously opened the doors for those of us waiting outside and welcomed us in. I whispered to BF that I hoped we would be sitting family-style; and we were. There were about 12 tables with 8 people at each. The festivities began with students banging on the large drum and the entrance of the Chinese Lion doing its traditional dance. The lion had us each involved by placing, a red money envelope, in its mouth. This is for good luck and to bring fortune; also it is considered as a donation to the students for their performance. The show so lively and wonderful to watch. The next few hours were the start of an eight course sampling of delicious Chinese dishes that were symbolic for the New Year such as, good luck, good fortune, good health, long life. Dishes included pork/shrimp potstickers, fried radish cakes, steamed sea bass with scallion/ginger and soy, three varieties of duck, winter melon soup, Ma Pao Tofu with rice noodles and the dessert was a tangerine panna cota with an orange/ five spice creme anglaise & ginger/ lychee foam . Everything was delicious and we were so full towards the end of the meal. I'm so happy that we attended this event. I hope there will be other themed dinners in the future. We would definitely attend. read more

This place was not great at all! The service was less than average and the staff was not knowledgable with the food. They even seemed nervous. The carts took forever and the vegetarian options lacked. One server continuously told me hat things were about to be ready, yet never returned to our table. I came here wanting to like this place. Unfortunately for this restaurant I been through culinary school and my expectation for a fine dining experience is very high. First thing I notice was the glass and silverware were not polished. You can see the drying water marks everywhere. Then I noticed my dinner plate was dusty and had two very little hairs on them. Wasn't off to a good start. I enjoyed a mimosa and some food. The flavor were decent but you can definitely tell they're trying too hard to fuse things together. My pork sliders were on a biscuit that fell apart from soaking up all the juices. It also had pickles! Like from a can or something. The dim sum was very limited. The shrimp dumplings had grounded up shrimp, this gave me a texture I wasn't use to because of regular traditional dim sum. They usually use whole shrimp. The pork dumplings and pork buns were pretty good though, I'll give them that. I didn't try a desert but at that point I already knew I could make food better. The staff was friendly, even though they needed help from me explaining the difference between chile paste from chile oil I enjoyed the hospitality. Went today to the Dim Sum brunch.....really wanted to like it but that didn't happen. The flavor of the food was't bad but most everything we had reminded me of casserole leftovers that you heated up in the microwave the next day. Nothing was truly hot, food was dry and not one dish was memorable. We tried something from every cart but dessert. This place is wonderful for a Sunday Brunch. We had so many dishes that were delicious. We were so satisfied after we left. We plan to return with friends. If you're looking for a traditional dim sum experience, this is not your place. The only traditional dim sum dishes I saw was har gow (shrimp dumplings) and sticky rice in lotus leaf. Although not traditional, I thought the dishes they had were still pretty tasty. Our favorite was the ma po tofu, which is Chinese, although not traditional dim sum fare. They put their own twist on the dish by adding crawfish and nian gao. I thought the crawfish wasn't totally necessary but liked the change in texture the nian gao provided. The papaya salad was light and flavorful and the braised pork shoulder was very tender. We also had the braised pork belly buns, but I thought the meat was a bit dry. Overall, I liked how everything tasted. Everything was pretty hot when we got it, which is good, since nothing ruins dim sum like cold dishes. I thought the prices were a bit high for dim sum. But then again, this isn't a traditional place. We spent about $70 (pre-tip) for 2 people. read more

We had a lovely brunch in downtown Tucson. The location is right near Downtown Kitchen with easy parking. The building that houses the restaurant is most interesting. Janos Wilder, the owner, was present this afternoon and was very personable as he made his way around the restaurant mingling with customers. DIM SUM is not typically what I would seek out, but I enjoyed it. Many of the offerings, however, contained pork, something I do not eat. Janos brought over a vegetarian dish with green beans and mushrooms that was quite delicious as an alternative. It was very thoughtful of him to do this. There was a tofu dish too that we ordered and it was excellent. Janos was open to suggestions about increasing the number of food choices that exclude pork. I suspect he will follow through. Try this place it, it's not inexpensive, but well worth the cost. read more

Ok this is not dim sum or even anything close. You don't serve Mexican food or bagels and salmon at a dim sum place. Food like that has its place and should be served fresh not sitting on a cart for 1/2 an hour. The steam cart was an after thought as we didn't get to choose any traditional items until we had been there for over an hour. The selection was minimal. At that point I had given up on the idea that I was going to eat anything here. If I could give the Carriage House a 6th star, I would. I just attended my second cooking class and dinner at the Carriage House yesterday. The title "Around the Globe- Phuket, Thailand" was taught by Chef Janos who was wonderful, entertaining, organized in his teaching method and taught us to cook a great meal from start to finish. So, not what we were expecting for "dim sum." Yes, they bring out food on carts, and they do serve quite tasty har gow (steamed shrimp dumplings) but that was pretty much the end of the resemblance to dim sum. I mean bagels and lox are being served for crying out loud. The siu mai were strange and included too many chopped vegetables which made them fall apart. Most food was served room temperature to luke warm. The "steam cart" was not steaming in the least. As soon as the waitress put down those steamers, I could touch them to move them without any worry. Each steamed bun dish was one bun which had way too much bun and little to no filling. Now, if I take out any expectation of dim sum, the food was overall tasty. They have a duck dish with flat rice noodles (wrongly advertised as Korean rice cakes) that was very tasty. Pork belly buns and interesting salads. A spicy eggplant and gai lan (Chinese broccoli) stir fry was the highlight dish. One thing all my friends commented on was the service. They are very attentive and had excellent service. But they also went a bit too far with their verbal dish descriptions (as is the trend). The waiters and waitresses had to recite long monologues about each dish and one even needed to refer back to a piece of paper to get through it. Just tell me what's in it. I don't need to know each step of how it is prepared nor every single ingredient. A little annoying we had to ask about 4 times to get tea cups for everyone in our group (it isn't standard to serve tea to each diner there). I also don't like that they use those cheesy plastic dishes with pseudo-Chinese designs to serve the food. Looks and feels cheap. I may come back to try their food again but we will not be returning for the Sunday dim sum meal at the Carriage House. read more

I took an out of town guest who has traveled the world and friends who were celebrating a birthday. Everyone enjoyed every dish and we all were sorry we could not try more of them. Carriage House is not just another outstanding brunch for Tucson, it matches the best Sunday brunches anywhere in the US. The service was exceptional, pleasant and helpful without being intrusive. What a wonderful brunch adventure! Janos, as always, creates his own unique 'take' on cuisine, as he's done so beautifully for years at Downtown Kitchen. He offered a variety of traditional steamed dim sum. The blend of pork and shrimp and ginger was beyond superb! His barbecue pork sandwiches were delicious. Interesting and unique salads and a wide variety of other dishes complemented the dim sum offerings, providing so many choices that we simply couldn't try them all.
