When we found out that our blind one spent the whole time there hiding we knew it was time to find someone else. We boarded our two dachshunds at the Barksville Inn and were very happy with the loving care they received. My husband and I decided to give the Inn a trial run before our upcoming longer vacation. We were nervous about leaving them with someone new, especially Lucy, the blind one. Turns out we were the only nervous ones. Buddy and Lucy did just fine! Kevin and David are caring people who really love dogs. They had a huge fenced in yard, which was a plus. Unfortunately, it rained most of their stay there. Hopefully it will stop raining next week! We will be taking them back then for a longer stay. I feel confident that they will be well cared for. I recommend the Barksville Inn 100%!

We were not notified, nor was a vet consulted at the time of injury. By the time we fetched our pup 2-3 days later (Kevin could not say when it had happened) and discovered the half-dollar-sized wound, it was too late for our vet to apply stitches. We provided oral and topical antibiotics, performed ongoing, twice-daily soaking treatments, and revisited the vet, all of which led to eventual healing. Kevin did not call to check on the dog, did not offer reimbursement for vet or kennel fees, did not seem to feel any remorse for having inflicted damage to our dog (apparently due to "backing up the wheelchair"). Very worrisome and disappointing.

But, they were bonded and I really liked their website and credentials. So, I thought that I would try it. When Cindy came for the consultation, I knew that I had made a good choice. I felt so comfortable having her take care of my cats and, obviously, my house. She is absolutely lovely and very qualified. Plus, we discovered mutual acquaintances. (I think they take care of everyone's pets in the area!) First, they give you an in-depth consultation to review all the needs of your pets before you go away. This is great! They even asked questions I didn't think to tell them. Then, while you are away, they really do a great job with your pets. One of ours is a little tricky and requires medicine. This was no problem at all. You get pictures while you are away. (This is nice!) If there are any difficulties, even minor, you get a call or message. I don't trust people at all and I trust them. I can't say enough good things!

The head vet, Linda, really tries to build a welcoming atmosphere, is extremely personable, and amazing with animals. She really tries to explain what is going on with your pet and will work with you to ensure you are getting the care you want for your furry friends. She has trained at Cornell and has a great working relationship with them, so I really feel like I'm getting great care for an affordable price. Because of that relationship, some of the lab work gets sent to Cornell and she also is not afraid to send serious cases to them. The rest of the staff is also awesome, from the front desk to the lab techs -- I feel they really care about your experience. They also have a boarding facility, which I have used -- I would recommend it. The staff is, again, really amazing and they get to know your pets so well. If you are booking for around the holiday, I would make sure you book early!

I boarded my chihuahua at Almost Home for almost a week. The facility was nice with private kennels…read morethat would allow the dogs to access the outside. They require a meet and greet for new dogs, so we visited the kennel before her scheduled stay and got to view the facilities then . When we dropped off my dog, my mom wanted to take a quick look at the kennel because my mom has owned a cat kennel (out of state) for 30 years. The owner was reluctant, because they normally schedule these viewings, but let her see the back briefly. The concept of only allowing scheduled viewings bothers me a bit (because in my opinion, nothing should be happening at any point that you wouldn't want a dog owner to see), but I understand that some kennels operate that way . When we picked her up, my dog and her bedding were covered in urine (her coat was sticky from dried pee). The owner said that had some inappropriate elimination issues while she was there. This isn't unusual for animals in unfamiliar environments, so I would think a dog kennel would be prepared to deal with these situations and be able to keep the animals reasonably clean. Since her bedding was covered in urine (which the kennel owner seemed a little surprised about), along with her body, I can only assume she was sleeping in a urine coated bed and her bedding wasn't changed out when it became soiled. Overall, the people were friendly (they sent me a couple photos of my dog the day after we dropped her off) but I wouldn't board my dog here again. I really wanted to support/recommend Almost Home because my parents have owned and operated a cat boarding kennel for 30+ years, and I like to support mom-pop businesses, but I have to say I am pretty disappointed.
