It lacked a patient-centric philosophy to thoroughly understand each patient's specific needs and develop a customized treatment plan. Although it underscored worse-case scenarios, it did not involve a combination of treatments, including lifestyle modifications, stress management techniques, physical therapy, orthodontics as well as oral appliances. The total cost for my treatment was greater than $6,000 (upfront) of which medical and dental insurance paid only a small fraction of the total. Since Dr. Patel is not a Medicare approved provider, most insurance plans do not cover his charges. The treatment included diagnostic as well as 5 or 6 doctor visits (over the course of a year) and delivery of two appliances: the first to be worn for 3-4 months 24/7 and the second as a transition to nighttime for stability. This reduced teeth-grinding and relieved pressure on the jaw joint. It worked well for me to wear the appliance only as a nighttime guard, and within a week, I noticed no jaw pain. The limitation of jaw movement gradually improved to the normal range. The nighttime guard (to be worn forever) does work to hold the jaw and associated ligaments in place to prevent further deterioration. When patients are empowered with knowledge, they can be more actively involved in the decision-making process to ensure optimal outcomes. While Dr. Patel's staff is informative, empathetic and personable, I could not say the same for him. There was more emphasis placed on selling (what I considered) to be an overpriced treatment than on actually taking sufficient time with each patient. Dr. Patel did not foster ongoing communication that would have optimized treatment to suit evolving needs. After I had spent an hour driving round trip, I was made to feel like I was an imposition. I was rushed in and out of his office within a couple of minutes. While there, he did not encourage me to provide feedback on my progress or listen to my legitimate concerns or answer any questions. Furthermore, he certainly didn't volunteer much, if any, information on my progress. Because of this negligence, I will be seeking further dental care elsewhere. It is clearly obvious that Dr. Patel places more emphasis on money and receiving glowing recommendations than on improving the quality of life for TMJ patients. For those reasons, I would advise anyone to seek out more personalized care from other healthcare professionals who actually value and respect people over profits.

Reading a previous review regarding the cost of treatment: Dr. Patel is an expert in the treatment of TMJ. His evaluation is very in depth. So in depth in fact, that an x-ray taken during my initial visit discovered plaque build-up in my carotid artery that warranted a visit to a cardiologist. The cost of treatment and insurance coverage was clearly explained to me at the time of my consultation. I chose to move forward with treatment and I am so very glad that I did. After one month there was significant improvement in my symptoms. My jaw no longer locked in place (scary feeling!), I could chew with no pain and I was able to open my mouth more. I am thrilled with my progress. I would not hesitate to recommend Dr. Patel.

When arrived to appt., had to pay $395 consultation fee up front which would be billed to insurance (told me that ahead of time). But as soon as the "sales pitch" was over from Dr. Hitesh Patel, was told my insurance did not cover anything (they knew this ahead of time, just waited to tell me until after I handed over my credit card). Then I had the consultation with Dr. Patel but it was totally a "canned" speech about how great he is and basically a "one fit-fits all" approach to "fixing" my TMJ. I am sure it is the same presentation to everyone. And that was what it truly was. A presentation. Then was told that the two "devices" (mouth gaurds I have already tried from other dentists although his is the "best" and he is going to patent it) he wanted to sell me were $7200. Again not covered by my very good insurance because they bill it as "appliance therapy" or something like that. I felt like I was buying a used car. "But wait...there's more...." kind of sales pitch.

Because I had symptoms, I was referred to Dr. Hitesh Patel (at the Suburban TMJ and Sleep Center in Naperville, IL) by my dentist. Instead of targeting the underlying causes, Dr. Patel's initial presentation of services was more of a canned one-size-fits-all approach. What's more, we became suspicious when Dr. Patel attempted to market his services to my husband who doesn't even have TMJ. Even though, my husband indicated he was not interested, Dr. Patel's staff persisted. The total cost for my treatment was greater than $6,000 (upfront) of which medical and dental insurance paid only a small fraction of the total. This reduced teeth-grinding and relieved pressure on the jaw joint. I found that wearing the appliance during the daytime was nearly impossible for me to do. It was not only a hinderance to effective communication but also difficult to schedule meals since you had to wait for at least one hour before eating. It worked well for me to wear the appliance only as a nighttime guard, and within a week, I noticed no jaw pain. The limitation of jaw movement gradually improved to the normal range. Furthermore, he certainly didn't volunteer much, if any, information on my progress. Additionally, I was appalled by his dismissive and condescending demeanor. On one occasion, he actually threatened to walk out of the room when he thought that I had taken too long to insert the appliance. Later on, I asked if it would be possible for him to examine the interplay between the appliance and my two new crowns to which he irately replied, "That's not my problem; that's your dentist's problem." Before my last visit, the staff attempted to get me to cancel, but I insisted on coming since I had already paid for it. While there, he again demonstrated his unkindness and lack concern for my well-being. Instead of allowing me to wash my hands before inserting the appliance, he grabbed it and carelessly applied more force than was necessary. After this flurry of activity, he mumbled on his way out the door. And then, he was gone--in an instant without asking if I had any questions, or providing any feedback or even wishing me well. Because of this negligence, I will be seeking further dental care elsewhere. It is clearly obvious that Dr. Patel places more emphasis on money and receiving glowing recommendations than on improving the quality of life for TMJ patients. I was diagnosed with…read moresleep apnea in late 2025 and required sleep care for insurance to cover CPAP treatment. My experience with MWCSD has been costly, stressful, and poorly coordinated. I was charged for physician-level care, yet I never met with a sleep doctor. I understand that advanced practice providers can be part of a care team, but from a patient perspective, it was deeply frustrating to be charged substantial amounts while never actually seeing a doctor. I was required to attend in-person appointments 48 minutes away in Traverse City during a harsh Northern Michigan winter, leaving around 6:00 AM in the dark before starting work at 9:00 AM ET. Each visit cost over $300 after insurance and consisted mainly of brief conversations about data I could not access. After being told my next appointment would be virtual, because they are renovating, I confirmed my email and phone number a week in advance. On the morning of my 9:00 AM ET appointment, I received no email, text, or link. I called twice, was redirected to East Lansing, searched an unhelpful portal, and messaged at 9:02 AM asking for the link. I finally received it by text and entered the virtual room at 9:09 AM. At 9:16 AM, I was told the PA would not see me because being late would disrupt her day. This experience made treatment for a serious sleep disorder more stressful, expensive, and burdensome. I am switching providers and ask that this be documented and reviewed so another working Mother does not experience the same failure in care coordination.

I have suffered from severe migraines, head pain, jaw pain, TMJ & chronic pain for years...and was recently diagnosed with mild sleep apnea. Dr. Planer took the time to explain in detail what my diagnosis was, and provided me with multiple options for treatment, helping me to choose the option right for me. At no time did I feel pressure to move forward or commit--she simply laid out all the information. I felt so at ease and confident with her and the team that I chose to move to forward that same day and get the ball rolling on the road to recovery. I am several months into my treatment plan, using a nightly oral device and my quality of life has improved tremendously. I didn't know it was possible. My path was not an easy one but the team stuck by me every step of the way, supporting me and assuring me. I highly recommend this practice. Thank you thank thank you!
