On our first visit we found the food inconsistent. The coq au vin and the lamb were tough and salty. The salads and appetizers were quite good. The service was attentive. It was a decent experience but not very satisfying. While we weren't thrilled with our first visit, the atmosphere is lovely so we decided to try again when we had visitors from out of town. It didn't go well. We had horrible service on our second visit, though the food was much better the second time. First they got upset because I wanted an appetizer as my entree and had to get permission from the owner. We were a table of five and were ordering many drinks and appetizers for the whole table, plus a soup for myself in addition to my desired appetizer and the other four at the table all got entrees, so it wasn't like we weren't spending but I still needed to seek permission, like I wasn't an adult with agency. Our server was MIA for most of our meal after that. He rarely checked back. Apparently, the good service is saved for his regulars. This was specifically told to me by our server who made us wait for almost an hour after our meal before tending to us again as "he had been busy with his regulars". All five of us had wanted dessert and after dinner drinks, but we had waited so long we just went home. I was treated to dinner there by a local friend and It was fantastic. Escargot which My friend had was superb. I had the clam chowder to start and it was really good. Rack of lamb was the main course for Me and I will just give 4 stars as have had better elsewhere. All & all the 3 of Us had a great meal. 2 bottles of wine with top notch service. Good thing we called ahead because this restaurant doesn't except walk ins . First impressions; beautiful restaurant with a lovely garden on the waters edge. . What struck me as odd was not one staff member was wearing a mask ? The tables weren't spaced out like most other restaurants. In fact the table less than six feet from us had a guest loudly discussing the fact she had had covid. I ordered a seafood salad & escargot, my spouse the pan roasted salmon . The young waiter serving us asked what I waited as my main . I explained that I preferred to order a few small plates instead of a main . He said that the chef required all guest to order a main . This policy was not stated on there web site ,or ion there printed menu or anywhere in the restaurant. I said well you better go ask your chef if how I want to order is going to be ok because if it's not we can leave . ....... a few moments later the waiter returned to say the chef would allow it. Deep Cove Chalet has a good venue with great food. However, they will not adapt for those who have specific dietary needs. I was one of four attending a birthday dinner, but I have celiac disease and cannot eat foods with gluten. I reviewed the on-line menu in hopes of identifying what would be gluten free. The menu gave no indication of items that could be gluten free, so I called the restaurant and was rudely told to read the menu. It was clear that they didn't care. At the restaurant it was more of the same. Bread is served before the meal, but for those of us that cannot eat bread are left to watch the others. I requested to get something while they ate bread, and they brought four slices of cucumber. They did recommend some menu items as gluten free, however there was no way to ensure that there was no cross-contamination with gluten as the restaurant menu items are not identified as gluten free. Judging from how I felt the next day, I think that there was come gluten in what I ate. This restaurant is not interested in serving those with special dietary needs. The server was great, but I still left feeling like the owners should have done better. read more

Another wonderful evening at Deep Cove Chalet. Our guests had the incredible (and generous) Beef Wellington. My wife had quail (just the slightest bit tough) and I had delicious scallops. Service was good. Not as attentive as a $600 plus bill would imply. The wine list is fantastic. We went with a Okanagan Black Hills Nota Bene ($65 in the liquor store, $135 at the Chalet). We ate here when we visiting Sidney a couple of months ago. The food and service were very good, but it's the "room" here that is superb--at least if you're on the terrace. What a lovely setting for lunch or dinner! So, when you make your reservation, be sure and ask if you can have a table on the terrace. They have a very extensive wine list, and don't even think about bringing something of your own. It's a classy place, but if you're there during the summer, dressy shorts and a polo shirt are perfectly acceptable--but no flip-flops. read more

My lovely wife and children celebrated her birthday at the Deep Cove Chalet. The dinner began well enough with a fireplace seating, somewhat attentive service but then disintegrated when the hostess took it upon herself to lecture and us that our children's giggling had received two complaints and we were to control their noise levels. Openly and loudly chastising customers is unacceptable and it ruined the celebration. She embarrassed and stole the occasion. The meal was mediocre and the room extremely tired. We were the only Indigenous or persons of colour in the room under the age of 65 and it felt racist. Quite simply the very finest of fine dining in a stunning location. Who would have thought that way out in Deep Cove was a restaurant of this calibre? Creative French influenced menus will leave you never wanting to eat anywhere else. The atmosphere is fairly formal, one shouldn't show up in Jeans at lunch and we usually opt for semi-formal attire at dinner. The setting is gorgeous, try to book around sunset. Menu items are varied and very well priced. If you love wine, the list is a dream and again very well priced. Had we not been with friends there we would have refused to dine there. First time I eat at the Chalet was over 25 years ago. Boy, that dates me... Then a few years later I lived just up the road. It used to be our regular spot for Sunday Brunch (first place I ever had sea asparagus). Just a short walk away. With food to die for and a setting that takes your breath away. Haven't been there for a while, but browsing through the reviews on Yelp reminded me that it is about time to go again. I have always loved the food and the setting. Bring some time. If location was worth a five start rating, this place would get it automatically....what a beautiful place. We were there on an early summer evening with perfect weather showing off the beautiful gardens. Its a bit of hike from victoria (45mins) but worth it. This has been a restaurant for almost 100 years, and the room is a bit tired, but its still elegant in a slightly faded way and the environment more than makes up for it. Wine list is extensive, mostly international, but some top BC wines to chose from (I had the 07 Burrowing Owl Meritage which was outstanding). The menu is a bit eclectic, but lots of interesting choices. I had the morel mushrooms en croute for an appetizer which was amazing, my wife had the cheese souffle on baby greens which was also great, and my mother had the fried oysters (which we mostly ate, also great). Mains were good, if not spectacular. My steak was a bit overdone and therefore tougher than it should have been (for a rib eye), both other diners had the rack of lamb, which was bit underdone. We had nice selection of cheese for desert. All in all, worth the trip...nice room in a great location, we picked a busy night which may have explained the slight mis-steps in the kitchen read more

The food here is absolutely superb. The best in Victoria. I can't actually think of anywhere better in Vancouver, although it's certainly on par with Le Crocodile. The wine list is expansive. It has perhaps the best patio on the entire island, surrounded by climbing roses with a breathtaking waterfront view. If I could eat every meal in my life here, I would. Simply the best restaurant in Victoria. Bev and her hilariously quirky husband Pierre have run the Chalet for umpteen years and it feels like I've been going there for that long. As Stacey mentioned, the location is unparalleled with stunning views of the Saanich Inlet. The service is impeccable as the waiters are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to get whatever it is you are after; no matter what. And the food! Wow. If you can eat, and I can, you must get the Beef Wellington or any one of the Wellingtons for that matter (can get lamb or pork I believe and occasionally venison or ostrich I think...?). They sometimes come around with seconds, which at that point can be borderline nauseating but no-one turns it down; it's just too good. All of the appies are fantastic and you really can't go wrong but the Onion Tartelette is a definite dark horse; try it...GOOD. And for dessert, again, this may seem a little plain but get the ice cream and truffle sauce. The ice cream is made at the Chalet as is the sauce. Make sure they bring you plenty of sauce and leave it on the table because you will keep pouring it on the ice cream; I guarantee it. It's been too long, I need to get back... read more

Place is going downhill steadily. Interior, washrooms in particular, needs to be upgraded - very shabby throughout. Rack of lamb, ordered medium rare, was so overdone that it was inedible and although owner acknowledged this, they did not make any adjustments to the bill. The feature that day was sablefish but my husband was disappointed to find it served on a huge mound of sauerkraut. Have been disappointed the past several times we've been there and have now given up on them. 5 star prices for 2 star food and service. read more

The scenery over the water is stunning, but the property itself has gone downhill since I last went. They seem to be doing a vinyard thing, but it looks rather shabby. Same goes for inside, the place is becoming more run-down and less classic. It could really use a good reno. Service-wise, I was not impressed. There were two larger groups there at the same time, and the servers spent all their time there, and basically ignored us. We would flag one down, they would say just a sec, and then never come over. When we were ordering, they seemed rather snobby and pretentious (definitely didn't approve of our wine choices!). The food was really hit or miss. The oyster soup was rather tasteless and watery, while the salads were really simple. Not bad, but definitely not fine dining. The cheese souffle was the high point of the evening, but it couldn't make up for my husband's lobster, which seemed very undercooked to the point where we considered sending it back. Well, the view is stunning. Now the bad news. The front yard used to be stunning but they've since added a vineyard, which really takes away from the scenery. They also have a bunch of old car, and a boat that are just sitting there, and are an eyesore. Inside could do with some redecorating, it just looks old and tired. I wasn't impressed by the service, as we had to wait numerous times for water, wine refills etc...The menu itself is really hit or miss. The onion soup was fantastic, but the salads were really simple and uninspired. I think their menu is almost too big, as some of their fresh ingredients appeared a little past their prime.
