They just had a big renovation in the community areas of the memory care sections and it looks freshened up. (Except for the old furniture). Most of the caregivers are good - they have a lot of work to do for a lot of people and not very much staffing. They seem to really care about the old folks who live there. I am updating my review from last winter to reflect current conditions at Aegis. The staff has had a major change with a new nursing director. A Marquita Kennedy has come aboard, and none are too happy about it. She has not been there terribly long, and already residents and us family are grumbling and good staff members are fixing to leave because of her. One bad egg may spoil a good thing here, and quick, too. The activities have slacked off some, less and less it seems. My Mother has been more sedentary with less to do. The food is still the same, not too good. The place is kept up fairly well. The staff turnover seems about the same as anywhere else, but is about to go through the roof with Ms. Kennedy at the reigns.

Mary explained everything to us thoroughly - we gained so much knowledge about Carlton and this facility. What impresses is the most is that you can tell that Mary, along with other employees here, are genuinely nice and truly enjoy and take pride in their job. We did a tour of the facility - which is beautiful and immaculately maintained - it is exactly as advertised... warm, home feel, clean but not sterile. We saw some folks walking around, some with canes, some with walkers, others with wheelchairs, and some who are getting ready to go on a tricycle bike ride! We toured around the faculty including its TV and activity room, the outdoor dining and hanging area, the restaurant, library. What impressed us the most - in addition to their staff - is their restaurant. It is a nice restaurant and has a seasonal menu, and plenty of drink choice. It is truly a cruise ship on land! Every elderly person should be fortunate enough to live in a nice facility such as Carlton's when we get older!

However, what we know for sure is that from the moment our loved one stepped into that community until her last breath, her caregivers were present and responsive and loving. Carlton's solutions to my father's limited mobility and need for some assistance in eating was to overmedicate him so that he was unable to eat. He lost 27 pounds in 2 months which landed him in the hospital. Carlton could not explain how this happened or how they "missed" the weight loss. He never recovered and died a week later. Carlton made many promises to our family, none of which were kept. Carlton is incapable of providing adequate memory care to its residents.

She likes the routine, eating with others and there is often someone popping into her room to check on her or invite her to meals. The staff are super friendly and get to know each resident by name. They have fun activities and something for everyone. It feels like a family with genuine care. I'm grateful mom has so much more social interaction than living alone in her too quiet house. They also recently updated the decor in the dining and activities rooms and they are beautiful and modern.

She was admitted for rehabilitation following a stroke and has specific medical instructions that are not being properly followed. She is supposed to have thickened liquids without the use of straws to prevent aspiration; however, even after having a meeting with their section managers about my mom's needs, the staff were still giving her straws. Additionally, she requires assistance with eating, yet staff routinely drop off her meal tray and leave without ensuring she is able to eat or drink. When I visited, I can see her tray of food is untouched on the table that is not even in reach of my mom. She is not supposed to get up without assistance. There appears to be little to no concern for whether she is receiving adequate nutrition or hydration. During day 3 of my mom's stay (same day as issue above), I found my mother shivering uncontrollably and unable to speak. After I alerted staff, they checked her temperature and found it to be 104°F. She was given Tylenol and an IV - the nurse did what she could. A couple of hours later, I requested that her temperature be checked again. The assistant used a no-touch thermometer but quickly moved it around her face and neck, then stated her temperature was 97°F. This seemed highly unlikely given how recently she had a high fever. After the assistant left, I checked my mother myself and found that she still felt extremely hot. I asked the assistant to return and recheck her temperature. It appeared he was not allowing the thermometer enough time to register properly, as he was moving it too quickly. When I asked him to hold it in one place where she felt hottest, he then reported a temperature of 100°F (I did not see the exact number, but the device indicated a red light - a fever). Overall, the staff demonstrate a lack of proper training, coordination, and communication. There are cork boards in patient rooms that could be used to clearly display care instructions, yet they are not being utilized (photo attached). This would be a simple but effective way to ensure consistency in patient care. Her inability to eat and drink independently, along with her shivering and high fever, went unnoticed by staff until we brought it to their attention. At the end of this experience, we requested that staff call an ambulance to transport my mother to the hospital, as we no longer felt she was safe in this facility. I will not be bringing her back. At the hospital, it was discovered that her urine was amber in color and she was diagnosed with a UTI. As for the facility itself, the environment is outdated and poorly maintained. The air circulation is inadequate, and the overall atmosphere feels depressing. Improvements in both the physical environment and staff performance are urgently needed.

Nobody will call you back and then when you call again, they'll tell you that person's not here or "THERE'S NO MANAGEMENT ON SITE." Finally, don't expect to ever get any if your belongings back and expect to find your loved one in someone else's clothes when you go in to see them. RUN from this place as it is cared for worse than the dog pound!

I was looking for something smaller, more personal, and as close to a home-like environment as possible. What stood out to me right away was the ratio of caregivers to residents; 3 caregivers for about 12 residents, which creates a level of attention and care that is hard to find. From the moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt warm and welcoming. Connie, the executive director, is attentive, kind, and truly cares. We immediately felt comfortable there. I visited frequently, about five times a week, at different times of day, and consistently experienced the same level of care. The staff was attentive, supportive, and genuinely present. I always felt at ease knowing he was in good hands. The food was also very good, which mattered a lot, as he really enjoyed his meals. I would especially like to recognize Miguel from the memory care unit. His care and presence are truly exceptional. He has a natural gift for what he does: compassionate, professional, and deeply attentive. He truly stands out because he genuinely cares, and you can feel that in the way he shows up every day. I always felt I could rely on him completely, and his support made a meaningful difference. I'm truly grateful for the care and environment provided here.

Not sure why Connie emailed Grace to tell her to look at my review and Grace text me telling me…read morewhile you were on the phone with her. I actually left a good review for your place and was just saying what we have been dealing with. You told her i shouldn't have put what she has etc but this is not some hippa violation this is saying what we went through as a family with her. So I'm not sure what you were trying to do with emailing So far this place seems nice and the staff there seem nice too! My ex partners mother moved into the memory care unit here and was told they got her to shower! Which is amazing because she would get physical and argue with her daughter and I to not shower. She has a room by herself right now and they have her get up in the AM to sit in the living room with is great so she's around everyone and not isolated in the room. She never wanted to do anything we would try to get her to come out but she just wanted to sleep all day. So far she's played bingo, they got her to shower and change her clothes. She would get mad at us for having her change but I'm glad they got her to. She would pretend with us when she didn't want to do anything that she can't walk or she's weak but she's really strong she's climbed over a metal baby gate, pounded on windows and has left the house, police involved so it became harder for everyone to take care of her because she was always trying to leave the house and she has dementia. Here they said she was full of energy and danckg to music which is great because we could not get her to do anything! Right now she does not have a roommate, kinda afraid when she does get one how she will treat them but the staff there I'm sure is well trained to handle that. She speaks English but pretends to only speak Tagalog and they have Filipino caregivers there which is good because they speak Tagalog! She's made comments that she will run away but it's locked with a code so she's safe and can not leave. So far this place seems great. When she went to visit the brother in Texas he said the first week she did great and showered, ate etc with no issues and then it went downhill after that. Hopefully she continues to thrive here and I think the routine and activities are helping keep her busy. Her son Glen brought up some alarming stuff to Grace he said he found out from a while back but I'm sure they have fixed whatever issues and the staff seem caring and attentive. When we moved her in the staff were friendly and caring. Much better than the place in Castro valley that Eden hospital sent my mom to for rehabilitation. ( they almost killed my mom) To the staff here just becareful because she has been violent and is smarter than what she makes herself seem and we've seen here watching when they put the code in the door! She's mentioned she's going to run away too. It's a good thing Gloria is there because Grace looses patience fast with her mother and the people there are better trained to handle her Just be careful too because she will say she's being abused and scream for help. She did that and thankfully neighbors saw but staff should be aware I couldn't say anything when Connie came because her daughter told me they will deal with it if it happens there but that's something you guys should know too!
