Fried cheese curds brought us here today, and they were fantastic! I equally enjoyed the dipping sauce served with the curds, too- a homemade spicy raspberry jalapeño? What do you do when you are craving cheese curd and Croghan Baloney but live hours and hours and hours away from where it is sold? Thankfully The Cheese Store has a website where you can place an order and they will ship it to you in two days so the cheese curd is still squeaky fresh! It will arrive in a box and inside that box is an insulated cooler which will have ice packs surrounding your items. The Cheese Store is locally owned by a cooperative of 22 dairy farms. You can't get anymore local than that. The store opened in 1972. The store sells items from local companies that manufacture the products that come from farmers. You can order from gift box ideas that the store has put together or you can make your own gift basket. The cheese curd can be ordered plain or flavored. The cinnamon apple was tempting but I stuck with the plain as that is how I remember it. Buffalo Wing; Garlic; Dill Pickle; Chive and Maple are other options. A variety of blocks of cheese are sold from Limburger to cream Havarti to cheddar to bruschetta to colby to Swiss to marble to provolone to pepperoni to scorpion pepper. The store even ages some of the cheese themselves in a walk in cooler. I've been told they have 21 tons of cheese in that cooler which is 1050 40 pound blocks. Then there is the Croghan Baloney which is nothing like the bologna sandwich you might have had. This is quality smoked meat with spices added and sold in casing that is peeled off when you are ready to eat it. Once you try it you will want more. Don't forget the Croghan Candy Kitchen Sweets, I got the peanut butter cups and mixed mini cups but you can get lumberjack bars; boxes of chocolates and even chocolate covered Oreos. Check out the website to see the other items you can order. Maple Syrup is sold as well. My favorites are the maple candies that didn't make it in my photo (as I ate them before the photo was taken as I was so excited the box arrived) and the maple cream that is still all syrup that was churned so it can be spread. I would have liked a sub with the deli meat cut to order but that wasn't available to ship. So I will need to go in person for the delicious sub one of these days. Still I am thrilled I was able to get these items that are not available in North Carolina that I grew up eating. read more

REALLY unfortunate experience at this place after just moving here and having been loving their selection of food and their sandwiches. My husband walked through the door after me carrying our baby and one of the workers was rushing to grab the sign at the front and gave a NASTY look and shrug as if him and the baby were in her way walking through the door. Always great sandwiches and subs. The fresh meat counter is the best thing about this place. Both the NY strips and Ribeye's are super tender and delicious to cook at home. So... you know.. just driving through the middle of nowhere upstate New York, cruising through miles of farms and field... and on the look out for some quality upstate NY cheddar.. (literally cheese, ha) and theirs the Cheese Store. It's a tiny spot at the intersection of Where? Blvd and Cant Get There From Here Ave., so we went in and checked it out. What appears to be a very unassuming from the outside general store, is packing some serious cheese credentials. They have a great selection of cheeses from the Adirondack area and up into Canada, mostly using locally harvested dairy. The staff was super friendly and they had tons of samples, and even a little deli/hot food counter. We tried a taste of their aged cheddar mac and cheese with cheese curd also.. so good. So after a few minutes of talking we find out, our Amish sales lady is married to a Portuguese guy from Westport MA, who would have thought. So after we procured a ton of cheese and shared some tips to making Portuguese Sweet Bread, we hit the road.. but can't wait to stop next time I'm in the area. read more

Every season we make a few trips to this place they have the freshest cheese curds around at reasonable prices and in my opinion better than the place on the river. They also have a great selection of cheeses and New York produce products always a fun time wondering up and down the aisles looking for unique products you can't go wrong at this place. Friday afternoon in the parking lot they have a chicken barbecue and vendors from the local area set up shop and saw some interesting stuff like goat meat. If you're in the area I highly recommend making a stop here. read more

This tiny shop sits a little bit down the road from Watertown's franchise and big box ghetto. It's a gem that offers local products at reasonable prices. There's no reason to get butter or cheese at Wal-Mart when you can get better quality and support the area farmers by getting it here. It's the same for a variety (not a large variety, but it's a small place) of other necessities, luxuries, and gifts for friends and relations who aren't lucky enough to live nearby. Jefferson County has had it's challenges, but The Cheese Store stands as a living reminder of what is good about this part of the country. We visited the Cheese Store in May of 2017. We were moving my Mom-In-Law down to NC. THIS STORE IS WELL WORTH THE TIME FINDING IT! It is fantastic and fresh. The selection is out of this world. I will be ordering items from here for Christmas gifts... and maybe a little for myself. LOL read more

Since I am from the area I am very familiar with The Cheese Store and the wonderful staff that keeps things going. The cheeses remind me so of that made by my Grandfather and Uncle Charlie which they gave to customers and friends of their store in Brownville, NY. The curd is especially wonderful, especially if you can get it the day it is bagged and is sooo fresh that it squeaks! Throw in some Croghan and Burrville cider and you have a top-notch party. It's a cute little store but the customer service isn't great. I came in and walked up to the counter without a single greeting from any of the three employees who were behind it. The food and quality is great, the staff is knowledgeable and helpful and the lady who helps me always wraps everything up beautifully.
