I popped over from Paris around noon to do a Jellycat shopping run at Selfridges, (near the Oxford Circus underground).
I am a "walker" and enjoy just walking around getting "lost" and navigating new neighborhoods.
With time to kill before my 16:31 departure back to Paris ( and Fish & Chips London exclusive Jellycats in hand!!!), I wandered a bit around Mayfair. Eventually I landed at this place. With about a hour of walking, I needed lunch, a break, and a pint. So it was convenient to just stumble onto this place.
The place was Empty and I was greeted by a dour, Eastern-European woman behind the bar and her very unfriendly companion who just glared at me. Fortunately, she quickly dispatched him and he scooted out of the place (drunk?).
Things improved from there! I ordered a cliche: fish & chips and a pint of Camden. The cod and fries were perfect in every way. The fish was perfectly crispy and moist inside. The fries, were so perfect they could have been a dish on their own, and generously sized! Alas, I fear for the British waistlines with these portion sizes.
At mid-afternoon , the pub began to fill up subsequently with a mixed crowd of young/old regulars and families with little kids. It was then I needed to make my exit to jump on the Eurostar back to Paris.
The place has upstairs, and there seemed to be a larger group being hosted there. All along, American old-rock music playing in the background...at an O.K. volume. Anything louder would have been annoying.
Credit cards ok, no immediate parking outside. Plenty of other pubs down the street in the vicinity if this one doesn't vibe with you. Family friendly ( at least before evening). Clean? Yes. Friendly? I will leave that one open. Courteous, good service, good food? YES!! read more
