The serving sizes are big and the ice cream is delicious! It was pretty busy when we went but the line went fast and gave us time to decide what we wanted since there were so many options between ice cream flavors, shakes, malts, and sundaes. There is seating in the back of the building, but when it's busy people are left to sit in the grass or stand around so we did bring some camping chairs to sit in to leave the bigger tables open for families and so we didn't have to sit on the ground! O mercy!! Great place with good people and food. That being said, make sure you are able to stand in line. Dont know that I have ever seen a line under 5 ppl and on a hot sunny Sunday afternoon... you should have ordered a quart from them and stayed home. One thing I do like is the benches in the back... great to set and wait on your food while you have someone ordering for you :-) OR nice to chill with other people eating. Our favorite hometown ice cream shop! The Chief definitely lives up to its expectation. They are modest in their preference, residing in the same building they've used for decades. Simple, practical, and offers a throwback to past times. No known website but can be found on social media and a Google search will reveal fast results full of articles and reviews. Family owned and operated and the staff is always friendly and attentive. The ice cream is homemade and served by the scoop. They have MANY flavors and every week feature 2 new flavors of the week. It's tempting not to go every week just to be able to try them out. The scoops are generous! My favorites are the cafe mocha and toasted coconut. Sometimes I go wild and crazy and combine the two! The kids love the peanut butter, blue moon and mint chocolate chip. Sugar free and frozen yogurt options are also available every week. Besides ice cream, they have milkshakes, sundaes, and food such as hot dogs and grilled cheese. Prices vary but a typical 2-scoop ice cream cone will cost you around $4. My absolute favorite combination is 1 scoop of lemon and 1 scoop of raspberry.. it's the best! Although, just recently I was able to try the flavor of the week which was blueberry and that paired perfectly with the lemon. I'm just going to tell you if you like lemon get the lemon. It's so refreshing and tastes like summer. Great for a hot day. 5/5 stars because I've never had anything better than the chief and to be honest I don't think I ever will. This is the best ice cream. The owners,teacher and former teachers,open their shop durning the summer months. They make a base ice cream then add amazing flavors. Lemon,strawberry,blue moon,raspberry,orange-pineapple,peanut butter & chocolate to name some of my favorites. This is smooth 12% butter fat ice cream that tastes great just by itself. Toppings are not needed but they offer a wide variety of Shakes,Sunday's and special Chief creations. My go to pick is a Chocolate Soda with Strawberry ice cream. The Chief is also open durning the Christmas season when they sell Christmas Trees and Holiday flavored ice cream. Enjoy. Update 6/11/2020. Trouble at Chief. They stopped the service of fountain pop. No more Green River. More importantly no soda water to make a Chocolate Soda. They still try to make a soda by using a 2 liter bottle of soda water. I tried one and it was horrible,flat. I saw this joint on Thrillist among the best ice cream shops in America, so I decided to check it out (even though the list was suspect, failing to include Meyer's Dairy in central PA). In short, yes, it is fantastic. The Chief combined with Rise n Roll in Middlebury are well worth a day trip from Chicago, if you are the kind of person whose sweet tooth is the strongest bone in his body. (Those are my favorite kind of people.) Mint chip was wonderful and butter pecan ambrosial. The coconut almond crunch sundae beggars description. It's toasted coconut ice cream topped with hot fudge, chopped almonds, and toasted coconut--with a Samoa cookie garnish. Honestly, I can't think of a non-cliched word that would express the glory of this sundae. I want another one RIGHT NOW. PS.
