First of all the ambiance is of a 1940 Soda Shop/Diner. I have seen this place on Yelp previously but I was in Elkhart/South Bend/Warsaw area. When we moved into Goshen it popped up again. What caught my attention was Phosphates. As a child the local dairy had a soda setup and served phosphates. So I had to go and check out the South Side Soda Shop. It was a blast from the past. We were seated immediately and got our drink order in. I got a cherry phosphate and water. I also ordered 1/2 lb of peel and eat shrimp and a Italian Hoagie. The cook got me extra horseradish for my cocktail sauce. They were great. The Italian Hoagie was exactly like an East Coast hoagie. Oil and vinegar with oregano. Topped with tomato, lettuce and banana peppers. It was amazing. My buddy got an orange phosphate and a Philly Cheese Steak which he loved. The service was amazing. The people were great. The place was packed. Wish it was open more often. read more

Stepping way back in time. This popular local diner appears to be frozen in time -- because, well it is -- you'll be hard pressed to spot anything that appears to be a newer fixture, furnishing or appliance. It certainly hasn't hampered the service or food quality. The dessert menu is massive -- there had to be at least 15 different fresh flavors of their famous homemade pies! The primary menu items run pretty heavy on subs and Philly cheesesteak combos. Hours vary by day of the week but focus mostly on Breakfast & lunch. A couple of nights they are open later for dinner specials. As for the decor -- you'll be surrounded by elements from the 1940's - 1950's and 1960's including an old jukebox. The turtle Soup was cold. The French fries were soggy The bill was $45 for 2 sandwiches two fries 1 soup and two drinks

Service was good, they missed an order of fries which was no big deal, but the food was terrible. Ordered food for the guys at work and myself. Two Philly cheesesteaks with sides of fries and a ruban with a side of fries and an Oreo shake. The fries were soggy with grease. It was so bad we could legitimately ring out grease from the fries and it didn't drip, it poured out of them. Not to mention there was absolutely no seasoning, not even salt. None of us finished our fries. The phillys were 90% bread. There was next to nothing on it. Hardly any meat, and you couldn't tell there was cheese or peppers on it besides the ghost of their flavors. It was also very dry. The bread didn't soak any of the juices up, it was just completely bone dry. The ruban was just as dry as the phillys, with just as much bread. Not much else needed to say about the sandwiches, they were an extreme letdown. The shake was easily the most obvious sign of laziness that i wish I would've noticed before i left with the carry-out order. Two scoops of icecream in the cup with milk poured in it and that was it. A milk float. All of this totaled to $50. The price doesn't match what we got. I could've spent $50 at McDonald's and would've gotten more food that tasted better than what we got today. Guy Fieri stopped there once 10 years ago for diners, drive-ins, and dives, and I guess after that the quality went out the window. Based on his picture being everywhere in there, it seems to be the only thing they have to cling to, to bring in customers. If he came back now, I don't think he'd be as impressed. Based on the food received, you should look into getting Gordon Ramsey in with kitchen nightmares to help you guys out. read more

Okay, this place blew way past my expectations! We were in Indiana visiting relatives when we decided to try out this diner I had found online. The ambiance is a 50's soda shop. This soda shop has an extensive menu with entrees, salads, sides, and desserts. I tried the Philly Chili, chili, egg noodles, onions, cheese, and sour cream served in a tall sundae glass. And yes, it tasted great and homemade along with a side a shoestring fries. I also enjoyed my first Cherry Phosphate! For dessert, I tried a Snowball consisting of a generous dip of vanilla ice cream covered in coconut surrounded by chocolate syrup on the plate. Prior to ordering dessert, our delightful waitress brought out a serving tray with labeled homemade pie samples for our consideration. We live in Dayton, Ohio, but I wish we lived closer to Goshen because I would be a regular here! read more

We stopped for lunch after furniture shopping. The food was good...service was pretty slow and forgetful. I had a clam roll...fried clam sandwich. The clams were fresh and breaded which is astounding. It was good...i think i woukd have liked it better with some slaw or something else besides tartar sauce on the roll. I split spiral fries w my dining companion. They were very good. I personally really like fresh potato dropped in clean oil and fried. No bizarre science starch etc on them to keep them crispier longer.....South Sides spiral fries scratch that itch perfectly. My wife had their 21 dollar crabcakes...she stated they were good...but not worth the price. They have Green River! ( I had 2) and some really great looking homemade pies ( next time) Service was friendly, but slow....they could step up their game a bit. What is not to love about seeing tray after tray of fresh baked pies coming out of the oven to cool. This quaint local eatery is a must for anyone who loves honest to goodness fresh home made food with super friendly staff. My only issue was ordering the fried clam hoagie. Great local gem. The owner clearly is a Philly transplant. They get the amoroso rolls from Philly for the steaks (which I would categorize as good to very good). It was a pretty cool stop on our trip I got the green river soda and it was pretty good it was made from a 1940s soada machine! They also have really long curly fries and a huge desert menu! There's a sink from the 1930s in the bathroom that's a really cool little piece of history. The staff was nice as well. read more

My first visit to this neat little soda shop that I've driven by so many times. Just the building it's self screams " awesome nostalgia". Menu was not huge, but has a little of everything. Prices are very fair for what you get. Excellent philly steak! Meat was perfect, tender with lots of flavor. Added mushrooms to the sandwich and it was soooooooo good! Ordered a hot fudge sundae that was served just the way I hoped, in a traditional soda shop metal dish. Looked really cool. Delicious hot fudge on top. Brought the kiddos here on a second trip, and they just loved the old booths and of course, the ice cream. The waitresses are very friendly and took extra time with my loud, goofy kids. So fun! I had the chili served in a fountain glass and it was really good. I was a little surprised, given that it's served with egg noodles, but hey, why not? This place was so fun and delicious (and prices are amazing!). I stopped in on a road trip for work for lunch. It took me a bit off of my path (turns out it's not 'just off the highway between Chicago and Cleveland....'), but it was worth it. Friendly with an atmosphere out of another time made this a fun stop. The food, however, catapults this to worth the side trip. The pie!!!! So good!!!!!! The burger was delicious and fresh and the perfect size (not gigantic so there's room for pie). I would have come back through on my return to buy some pies but I was on a time schedule. The strawberry shake was so thick it wouldn't fit thru the straw and it was delicious! I had a cherry phosphate that was wonderful. We both ordered the #8 cheeseburger on the grilled New England English muffin. They were yummo!! We shared the curly fries ordered with a side of cheese. Love it! Great gem tucked in a residential neighborhood with street parking. Once you inside overlook the aging decor, if your that person... that part of the diner dive charm. Most importantly they have pies, lots of pies! Homemade pie that smells amazing, tastes equally amazing and my favorite was an option, this could be the best piece of pie ever with a warm golden flaky crust filled with more rhubarb than strawberries......Hallelujah!!! They make the chicken salad and it was full of celery and lots of shredded white chicken served with a field green salad and some Derby dressing. Started with a cup of chili served in a mug. Flavorful and mild with big chucks of meat and veggies. I had the cheesesteak hoagie and it was awesome alongside the shoestring fries. It came with both jalapeños and banana peppers to load on if you want and a small serving of coleslaw. Meal was reasonably priced. This was an interesting place. The turtle soup was good, but get a mug, don't make a meal of it. My wife had the crab cakes which were really and very good. My son had a "Philly" cheesesteak and they did a great job with that, especially the roll. I had beef tips on greens w Blue Cheese. This was ok, but the Blue was weak, and steak thin. Clearly they are about pies. I had the pecan-chocolate pie and it was really good. Sadly they only serve soda. Because this restaurant was on the Food Network, my husband wanted to try it when we were in town. I have to say that the vegetarian selections are very slim and the restaurant does smell like seafood , so if you don't like those you probably will not tolerate going into this restaurant. Parking is difficult because there is street parking because it appears that this restaurant is in a residential neighbourhood off of a Main Street. One of things that was recommended to try was the "green river float". It is essentially a lime soda with any flavour ice cream you want scooped into it. It's ok. We also tried the Southside special and we were disappointed with the fact that they did not have brownies but, they did offer for us to try it with their black-bottomed cupcakes. Very good hometown food. Spiral fries are soo good. Very big basket, too much for one person. I get the #8 sandwich (chicken pesto). My favorite thing on the menu is the dinner salad. It has goat cheese on it and it's delicious. We love the Chocolate towne pie (like a cookie pie) it has walnuts in it and you must get it warmed with ice cream. My favorite dessert is the pumpkin pie dump cake on my served at holiday time. Legit the best ever. read more

We were all in the mood for a Philly Cheese Steak it seemed so we also added in the CrabCakes, Onion Rings, and Spiral Fries to share. Everything was delicious...the Philly sandwiches were great, the meat was tender and the bread was authentic....the CrabCakes were my first foray into such an item and I have to say that they're gonna be hard to beat...Onion Rings and Spiral Fries needed some more salt but that's just my preference. Felt like Philly cheesesteak today so my coworker and I stopped in and had a couple cheese steaks, the were ok . The cheese lacked flavor and the bread was a bit too chewy but the meat was probably the best part of it all also had the chili which I was told won awards ! Umm I don't think so ! I'm from Texas and I really know chili ! It had potential but was a bit to weak on flavor I would have appreciated some bold flavors in there , not terrible but ok . This is, like, the best restaurant in Guatemala (damned spell check - Goshen) for standard American food. It's GREAT, as Tony the Tiger would say. They serve just about every standard dish and there isn't a dud on the menu so you can't really go wrong. Then there's the pies, and the sofa fountain creations which can become chronically addicting after only a couple of bites. Everything is absolute incredible! The atmosphere was adorable and the staff was friendly (Rodney was our waitress and she was fantastic!). I got a chocolate soda and some cheddar soup. The soup was DELICIOUS; kind of like what I used to get at the Palmer House where I worked as a teenager. My husband and I both got the New England cheeseburger; and it was yummy! We also got some spiral fries and mozzarella sticks. The sticks tasted like the ones you get at the fair (though these were smaller). They didn't have coconut cream pie today, but they had coconut macaroon (also somewhat reminiscent of the Palmer House). I'm so happy I could cry! Cherry on top of an already wonderful day! Always one of our favorite stops to eat. My favorite is the green river drink with a New England burger and handcuffs fries. The staff are incredibly kind and work to please anyone who enters. Do yourself a favor and stop in for a piece of the pie that Is a homemade treat made by the daughter of the owner. The pie is still some of the best I've ever had and well worth the trip by itself (especially the lemon meringue). read more
