I ordered a 9" round chocolate cake with West End frosting...whatever that is. The decoration was lovely but the cake was very dry. Everyone who ate it agreed. I was also charged for a 10" round but didn't notice on my receipt until I returned home. Also picked up 8 different donuts. I checked out west end because I heard a lot of rave about it! They do open early and close early so I'm glad I was able to make it. I got some cookies ($1.25or $1.50 each) and a slice of cake ($3.00). They had a very pretty sprinkle cake that would be a great birthday cake for someone ! They have premade cakes available for purchase if you didn't pre-order. The ladies were nice that worked there and went through some of the items on display. I enjoyed the donut cinnamon bun ($1.50)- good for breakfast. They take cash or card. Are they the best I've ever had? Very affordable, very traditional super tasty treats! I spent $7 and got a coffee, and several tasty treats including doughnuts, danish and cookies! Pass on the coffee, but I'm not mad about it cuz it was super cheap. Drink it only if you need the caffeine boost and don't care about flavor. which is the COMPLETE opposite of all their tasty treats! The keiflis were so good and even though slightly different than my grandma used to make, captured similar flavor and brought back the nostalgia! The doughnuts were small but tasty which I actually prefer! I don't like cutting a doughnut in half and having a super crusty dry side that I can't eat or gorging myself with a too large treat! The caramel apple cider doughnut was really great. And with the affordable price point, I felt it was an accurate value! My absolute fave was the Maple Pecan Danish. I just couldn't stop thinking about the perfect ooey gooey sweetness rounded out with a nice pecan and maple flavor! They recently reopened and I'm so glad! Thankfully the old bakers were contracted to train the new and keep the original recipes. They have a variety of amazing treats daily and some on specialty days. They offer Creme Horns on Thursday's. Saturday they offer Mastallen bread. All the doughnuts are are wonderful, as is the French bread. I prefer the almond cups over the almond squares. The Mastallen bread is sweet, but very tasty as a toasted ham & cheese sandwich. My dad loves the almond joy cookies. They can have long lines sometimes, but they're definitely worth it! read more

After a long drive from Indy, we got to the funeral home in Mishawaka a bit early and needed something distracting to take the edge off a bit. Literally across the street we spotted "West End Bakery" and felt drawn to explore. It wasn't past 8:30 AM but the place was busy -- a great sign! This little bakery was opened in 1928 -- a cool bit of trivia considering my aunt whose life we were celebrating that morning was born a year later, in 1929! How cool. Anyway, the donuts are FANTASTIC. We bought 2 dozen, trying to get a sample of whatever was recommended to us by the helpful employees. Highly recommended. read more

IMO Macri's make amazing donuts and muffins. Oh and they also bake custom cakes as well. I haven't had the cakes with any regularity but the times I have had them they were also great. Go get some donuts at the West End Bakery. Great local business with friendly customer service. They work to serve their customers. I highly recommend trying this shop for their donuts but would bet their cakes and other baked goods are stupendous. I will be going back to try more of their great selection. It is a cash only place which likely tells you something about their size and history, this is something that not everyone can appreciate but that is worth the time to find a couple dollar bills to get in there and indulge yourself with a sweet treat! read more

Man, I hate leaving a negative review, especially on a local institution like this, but our experience here was just sub-par. The donut tasted heavily fried, like the oil was soured, and it was dry. All of the danishes and pastries that use fruit filling have that goopy, pre-packaged, syrupy filling that you find in a jelly donut. The sticky buns were decent, but under-proofed. I know how difficult it is to run a bakery, how it's tough to turn a profit and deliver quality, and how much pressure there is to cut corners, but dang, I just felt like I encounter the same quality at a grocery store. read more

Hands down my favorite bakery in the world. Yes, that's right, the world. Deal with it. I love this place. I've been coming here with my family before I can walk. To this day, I still can't find a better donut. I also love that they are the type of bakery where on specific days of the week they make certain baked goods, and if you don't get there early enough then you aren't getting any because they are sold out. That is how you know they have loyal customers and the type of sweets that keep people coming back. They are also always busy whenever I come home, which makes me happy because that means they aren't going anywhere. This place is a hidden gem. You ever have a grandmother who made pastries? She's reincarnated here. The key is to get here early in the morning when everything is fresh and full. There is nearly always a line and the smell inside is simply amazing. They have traditional breakfast pastries and deserts as well as many Belgium creations. They also do wedding cakes, this is where my husband and I got ours done and believe me, we'll be going back for an anniversary cake very soon. It's my 100th review, so I wanted to pick a special place for that milestone. West End Bakery has been one of my favorite places for nearly all my life. Almost every birthday cake I had growing up was from West End - plus several after I'd moved away! Whenever I return to Indiana to visit my parents, we wind up ordering a cake, even if it's nobody's birthday! So, to me, their cakes taste like home. They're not the uber-gourmet on-trend cupcakes with artisanal vanilla, locally-sourced butter, or hand-milled flour, but they are consistent and still baked with care. The two-layer cakes have the most perfect crumb texture - tight but not dense. I've waffled between vanilla and chocolate cakes over the years, but have finally settled on a combo: one layer vanilla, one chocolate. They'll do anything from 6-, 7-, 8-, 9-, 10-inch round cakes (which we get for birthdays) up to full sheet cakes (which we had for my HS graduation party). White-white frosting that is not tooth-numbingly sweet. They'll pipe any kinds of flowers, decoration, or text you want on top. We often get roses, and they're always perfectly-executed. Their red and black icing doesn't taste very good (typical of those food colors), but they'll warn you ahead of time. Their donuts are killer, too. Never greasy. This is my go-to spot for donuts on a Saturday morning. Luckily, I live within walking distance, because it is street parking, and it is crowded. (If you park on West St, by St. Bavo's, it's not so bad). There usually is a line, but it goes pretty fast. The last time I went there were 9 people in front of me, and I was still out in less than 10 minutes). The donuts, pastries, and muffins are so delicious, it is well worth the wait. The prices are better than Dunkin's or the new Amish place, by A LOT, and the quality is unmatched.
