I LOVE THIS PLACE! I am from Colorado but have found myself in southern Michigan the past two summers. Last year my friend's family made the 45 minute trip to get Rise 'n Roll and I loved it so much that I insisted we go back again this year! The box literally says "for those who want the best and know the difference" and without a doubt I can taste and smell the legitimate difference in these donuts versus any other. I'll attempt to describe, but you'd be better served just trusting me and showing up. RnR bakes "for those who want the best -- and know the difference!" I concur. The remainder of this piece will consist of me convincing you of the obvious, impatient since I know those tasty delicacies are just waiting for you to stop reading and start eating. Let's start with the bellwether: the Cinnamon Caramel Donut. Just camp out here all day if you're a newbie or bad decision-maker, or love extra pounds. Something they do in that secret recipe makes this taste unlike anything else out there in donut world. I'm sure somebody somewhere has something close, but you go find it and leave me here. Oh wait I'm supposed to be convincing you to stay (I know I don't have to). These also come in "hole" size, perfect for grabbing a box to eat in entirety slowly one at a time, while proclaiming "well one more won't hurt, and besides they're so small". Meanwhile 1,000,000 calories later when you rouse from that caramel-coma, it'll be worth it. Later, on the second day, branch out to the Peanut Bismark, Crunch Bismark, or fabulous Apple Fritter. Of course have more Cinnamon Caramel, and then nighty-night. Don't stop with the donuts though; go on an alleged health kick with pumpkin bread, various pies, cashew crunch, and many other crunches. When you're ready for something actually healthy, wash it all down with some Amish cheese, egg noodles, or Old Fashioned Traffic Jam. Consider it a reverse meal. But be sure to round it back out with one more Cinnamon Caramel. With many locations from Shererville to Valpo to Fort Wayne and Indy, you won't have to make the trek to Middlebury (but why not visit the mothership). First of all, this is more than a donut shop. I was overwhelmed with everything they had to offer, in a good way. Service was great and helped me hone in on what I wanted. Samples are available for the donut I was told they are famous for. Donuts, pastries, pies and more. I hate to be a hater but these donuts tastes like Dunkin, which I do not love. They are supposedly "fresh and preservative free" but they taste artificial. I tried the glazed, chocolate frosted, cinnamon caramel, and that same donut filled with apple cinnamon. I am not getting the amish crack craze I guess. I do like that they sell baked goods at a discount. The bad thing is that $1.39 pie slice tastes like it should cost $1.39. Pie in kzoo is pricey but it is pretty good, ala Ryskes. The prices are decent on some of the shelf products but this area clearly needs a good donut shop to come to town if this place is all the rage. Cutest shop with homemade goodness. Of course the "crack" donuts are what everyone raves about. They pretty much melt in your mouth! But the other goodies are great too! I have had the cinnamon buns, the jam, and also the apple fritters. They also have a gluten free area with treats and also pasta which I thought was awesome for those that have dietary needs! Maybe it's all the five-star hype, but these were merely okay for me. I was underwhelmed. I came in to get breakfast close to noon (yeah, yeah, I know, but this isn't my native timezone anymore), so I wasn't anticipating breathtakingly fresh donuts. Got a chocolate-frosted-autumn-sprinkled glazed donut, and ordered what I thought was the "Amish crack" everyone talks about - but wound up with a bavarian-creme filled donut instead with the caramel powdered sugar instead. Got a free small cup of coffee, too, so that was a bonus! Didn't have to go elsewhere for my caffeination. It was serviceable - I wouldn't seek it out, but if you need something to wash down your donuts, it'll do quite nicely. Anyhow, I asked for my donuts to go, but then my 3yo son asked to sit down, so we ate our to-go treats out of the bag. Plenty of seating near the soda fountain. This was where I discovered I didn't get the right thing. No matter, I ate it anyhow. LOTS of cream filling. Lots. Maybe even too much. My mom brought me some of the regular caramel-sugared yeast donuts a few days later. Again, they were fine, but not spectacular.
