Upon returning to the Prairie mall after a 10 year absence from Grande Prairie, I thought back to…read morewhen I first started going there 16 years ago and realized that while much has changed...even more has really stayed the same. The place feels very modular... like they shipped each wing of the mall in a crate and then cobbled together in a disjointed fashion.. Ie the south wing has an entirely vibe and feel than the north... At least on the north side they got rid of Zellers and put a Target in there. Although I'm not so sure how successful the Target will be, since it has a LOT of competition in the area... Also while Zellers had many faults, it's location in the mall was another nail in its coffin since that area is quiet with little foot traffic. Other changes include a whole bunch of new clothing stores (while many of the legacy stores still remain), that all are priced exorbitantly to cater to the oil money so freely flowing in this town, and excluding those of more modest means. The one thing that has never changed is the teenagers that loiter around everywhere and never look up to any good, although I'm well aware than the average GP teenager probably has more disposable income than I do :( Also the parking situation is rather awful, and all the roads around there need a redo.. Access and exit via auto mobile can be quite stressful, especially around peak times.

The Prairie Mall is impressive to me, especially for the size of Grande Prairie. It has some…read moretrendier stores (ie. Aeropostale, la senza, etc) and some that cater to the older crowd, which is appropriate for the demographic. Personally I never shop at the Zellers in Edmonton, but the one is much more tolerable. And really- where else are you going to go? They do pictures with Santa which is great. There's lots of signs of community outreach- you can really tell that this is the PRAIRIE mall, not a mall just run by big corporations.
