Just arrived in Portree and were on the way down to the harbour. It was well past lunchtime and we just stumbled upon this Chippy shop and took a seat (tables available since peak time was over). Ordered some Fish'n'Chips, fried shrimp, some soda and a few minutes later also grilled chicken breast (seen it on another table, looked good). Staff was very friendly, prices fair for a hotspot like this. The fries were alright...just about as in any regular Chippy shop. The fish though was really great. Firstly it was actually two very sizeable pieces. Very crispy, inside fresh, juicy and tender. As it should be. The fried shrimp were really wonderful. Again: tasted nice and fresh. Hot and crispy. The good looking chicken breast was actually very good. And not just a chicken breast - it was pretty much half of a chicken. Very nicely grilled with great flavours. We really had a great time here. Location is very convenient, not much of a view. But a cheerful atmosphere. Food was great as was the service. Prices fair. An enjoyable lunch. read more

The husband got an afternoon snack of a 10 pound (cost not weight!) fish and chips plate. It was well-priced (add 6 pounds for the same plate at Poppy's in London), but we all thought it was too greasy. Our fish and chips were fine but the husband's least favourite (see that "u" in there?) fish and chips of the five he had during our 2 1/2 weeks in the UK. read more

I loved this place! I wanted real Fish & Chips, and The Chippy has it. While exploring Portree's harbor you will find The Chippy on the steep road to/from the harbor. There are a couple of picnic tables, so very limited seating, and right next to the road. They only take cash, so be prepared for that. Very reasonable prices for the portion size you get! You could share an order. The fish was crispy and fresh, the chips were hot with salt & vinegar. The service was a bit cheeky, but friendly. It is a very busy place with lots of people ordering takeaway, so our wait was about 15 minutes for our food. A perfect lunch stop! read more

This place is cash only which was fine since we were traveling and had it on hand. We've had fish and chips several times this trip and this one was our least favorite. You wait in line and order. And they'll shout it out when your order is up. There were people everyone - sitting on the benches out front, waiting inside and out, so we decided that when we got our food - we would drive back to our AirBnb which was nearby. I ordered fish and chips with cheese. My boyfriend opted for the burger since he had his share of fish on this trip. We were asked if we wanted salt and malt vinegar when the order was up and they did what we wanted and wrapped it up to go. They had condiments like ketchup, tartar sauce, etc that were all for purchase. When we got back to our Airbnb which was 5 min away - my fish was a bit soggy already - didn't keep its crisp too long. The fish didn't taste fresh and wasn't flakey that I've had at previous chippy's. The chips with cheese were good and a huge portion. My boyfriends burger was over cooked and dry. It was probably a frozen patty. So, to say the least, we were disappointed. I know there's another fish and chips place right near here so could be best to try the other one. read more

Do not order burger. Looked like sad patties and tasted even sadder. Fish was cooked really well just lacked salt (or flavor really) condiments would've helped a lot. Like a slice of lemon and bam it would've been awesome. Overall glad to have been able to grab food quickly since you have to have a reservation in Portree just to get a glass of water. read more

Loved loved loved The Chippy! The customer service was fantastic and the food was just as amazing. The fish was lightly fried and flakey. The chips were equally as tasty. Be sure to try the fried sausage too as it did not disappoint. I learned a lot about the local area while visiting here as well. The staff was great at giving suggestions of things to do as well as proving a little historical insight into the area. Just really the nicest people and a great establishment. A true testament to Scottish hospitality. read more

Excellent chip shop on the steep Quay Road down to the harbour. Fresh haddock ("cod" is blacked out on the menu, or was when we visited). Good mushy peas, jars of malt-vinegar pickled eggs and pickled onions (both excellent), and onion rings (a little odd, didn't include rings-of-onion --- more like homemade Funions). They've got a sheet with "Would you like salt & vinegar?" written out in ~6 languages, to help with that critical question. Those are free, other condiments are 20p per sachet. No inside seating, but they've got picnic tables. read more

Where do I begin. There were chips. A stupid amount of chips. That was the only positive. The beef burger was unequivocally the worst burger I've ever tasted. The cheese tasted like someone had melted a pile of plastic from the rubbish bin and then spread it on the paddy. The chicken burger was a supermarket frozen chicken fillet in the bread with nothing else. Literally nothing. No lettuce, margarine, Mayo or cheese. The staff were pretty friendly so I guess that's a plus. read more

We saw a member of staff walk straight from outside to behind the counter to start her shift and wrap our fish suppers (including touching the fish when it came to the salt and vinegar seasoning!) without washing her hands. Hence the two stars. Other that that, the Chippy is a proper traditional chip shop. The fish looked fresh and plump with fluffy batter and came in generous portions. As expected, the fish was lovely but the chips just tasted dry and reheated which was disappointing. Not an expensive meal by any means but could have been a lot better! It's also teeny weeny meaning it gets cramped inside during busy periods but there are some benches outside! read more

This review is also on behalf of my mum, who suffered through eating there. She describes the food: "Chips that were so mismatched in size, nothing was cooked evenly, some tasting like they had been sitting for a fairly long time. The burger bun was still cold from being frozen - almost frozen in the middle. The lettuce was wilted, the tomato had been frozen giving it an unpalatable texture and taste. I threw out more than half of it." Almost two star, but made one-star due to the service. Everything there is cooked in beef fat - they do say this on a large sign in the shop, but when I rather disappointingly sighed (I'd been looking forward to some good chips to take down to the pebbled beach with my mum) the server *smirked* and dismissively shrugged. Stuck it to another nasty vegetarian, he did! Fair enough if that is how they cook their food, it's a traditional way that must be popular. But a friendlier person might have mentioned another nearby cafe where I could pick up something while my mum ordered her food. Hot tip, guys: it doesn't matter if you cook everything in beef fat, if you don't cook anything properly! read more

I ate there one night when other things in Portree were full. They serve very greasy and thickly battered fish and soggy chips. It is a popular with the local school kids, possibly because of its cheap prices. Unless you are desperately hungry and everything else is closed, I wouldn't recommend going there. They might put you off of fish and chips altogether. They were also the only business in Portree that was not friendly. read more
