Stranded in the gastronomical wasteland that is West Gosford, with only the RSL Bistro, Maccas and…read moreKFC to eat, this is like discovering Tahiti and all it's delights after months adrift at sea thinking hope had abandoned me. For six weeks this is where I got the only decent coffee in the area each morning. Many mornings we enjoyed a breakfast worthy of any of the best cafes in the big cities. Even Jimmy's take-a-way lunches came in handy when I need to take one to work. But dinner...! That was the surprise. No, it's not a fancy restaurant and this isn't fine dining so let's not get carried away. This is a cafe by day, so it's the same by night but with food to surprise. Leaning on Jame's Italian heritage (yes, he introduced himself to me the evening I was there) the fare has some of that ethnic bent but it's very much a fusion menu.

terrible coffee, terrible service and systems…read more Firstly having a coffee size that requires two shots of coffee but asking you to pay extra 50 cents for double shot??? So the choice is you can make my coffee correctly for an extra charge or you can give me a diluted cup of warm milk?? This sets the real idea of the cafe, that they do no know anything about coffee. My husband and I used this coffee shop every day when commuting at 5/6 am when nothing else was open, but the coffee is so inconsistent, one day I could tolerate it because otherwise I would fall asleep at the wheel but after that it was too much. The coffee is watery, weak and never made correctly. Most likely because it is badly managed you have a person taking orders who also prepares food so when she is off in fairy land the barista is taking coffee orders with one hand and making them with an other.. May I suggest that they try one of their large coffees and see that it's an art form and if they did it properly they may actually make some money or customers?

There's a feeling you get when you step into a venue that just works. It's a certain je ne sais…read morequoi, something you can't quite put your finger on but it just makes perfect sense. Reviver is one such venue. Situated on the main road of Gosford, this quiet little cocktail bar adds some real Melbourne-Paris-Portland charm to the Central Coast. The deep red wall set opposite the beautiful exposed sandstone bricks of this resurrected funeral home captures the quirky, satisfying class of the place. And the cocktails, my god, the cocktails. I'm quite partial to the Airmail and (when it's available) the Aviation, but you can't go past a Corpse Reviver, the bar's signature drink. With a satisfying menu of nibblies, and a huge range of classic cocktails, Reviver is a great evening out for a drink, a think and a conversation. Be sure to be cashed up, the drinks are excellent but they're not cheap - this is not the place to get hammered (though Tommy's Margarita packs a punch!) Absolutely worth a visit for the connoisseur of cocktails, or if you're looking for somewhere to relax and unwind after a day at work.

The stories told by the owners are always amusing, and always true from their many travels around the world visiting cocktail bars. The people you meet are eclectic bunch but very interesting. You never know who you are going to sit beside. It's unique, it's funky. It brings a new meaning to My Third Place. Try it for yourself. Ask for the Corpse Reviver at least once.

The menu was primarily seafood, also not a surprise. I decided to order a salad, not really in the mood for seafood. There was roast cauliflower, steak, chicken Parmesan, and various pizzas in addition to fishy dishes. The place was also packed, so I was glad we got an outside table. I thought my salad was delicious. It had fennel and Parmesan cheese shavings over the greens. I don't know what the greens were, but everything went well together and it was a generous portion. I had second thoughts about salad when I saw the amazingly presented entrees my dining companions had selected. After starting out with a beautiful Bloody Mary, my daughter-in-law had a crumbed dory burger with chips(fries in the States). It had two fish patties coated in herbed crumbs and she said she almost always ordered it, it was so good. It looked delicious but I stuck with my salad. My son had beer-battered flathead fish and chips. It was perfect with crunchy, lightly browned coating covering flakey white fish. I snagged a few of his fries which were also perfect. Prices in restaurants are always higher than in the U.S., but how likely are we to find fish like dory or flathead on the menu? Additionally, waitstaff in Australia are paid a living wage and don't rely on tips.
