Every time I go to Williamsburg, I come here. The owner even said "hey, you're back from Texas!" last time I walked in. Nice to be remembered! They roast their own beans (admittedly I'm not a fan of burning coffee beans) but they can't get any fresher than that! The house cups (drinking in) are nice and big. The coffee is strong (I like it that way) and the locals that hang out there are very friendly. I used to go to this place pretty much every day in graduate school, and it's still here! The decor is pretty much the same and the coffee is still just as good. Love the smell that greets me as soon as I walk in the door. They also have a good selection of beans if you wish to purchase some to take home. This plaza is decrepit, though I'm told it used to be the most hoppin' place in Williamsburg. The Coffeehouse (and Nails Uptown around the corner) is the only redeeming business in the place! Very friendly, great coffee, nice atmosphere. What more can you ask for? read more

NOT A FOOD REVIEW. There are three first impressions. 1) The strip mall is outdated and empty. It looks like a ghost town. 2) The outdoor seating area is nice. Umbrellas at every table almost. It is very inviting. Although it is a little drab. Some flower boxes would go a long way. 3) The interior is out dated. It looks like you're going to eat crappy food and drink crappy coffee. I was very hesitant to buy a latte, which is my drink to test out a place. The espresso machine is nondescript. Granted, I wasn't wearing my glasses s I couldn't make out what the machine was. No care was given to the steaming of the milk. The barista simply put the wand in there and turned it on. There was no way she could check the temperature of the milk and it did come out a little too hot. The salvation? Two things. 1) The people were ridiculously friendly. I was greeted with a warm smile and I was taken care of well. 2) The fact they roast their own coffee. The latte was not bitter. I fully expected that considering the tamp looked weak and the milk was not steamed properly. The espresso at least in the latte tasted fine. Had they paid more attention to the temperature of the milk the latte would be even sweeter. The bottom line is this if I were ever in this shopping center again I would not hesitate to buy a latte but I am probably not going out of my way to come here again. Summery: Outdoor seating area - 8/10 Indoor seating area - 5/10 Friendliness/customer service - 9/10 Latte and presumably other coffee drinks - 7/10 Unsolicited advice to "The Coffeehouse" 1) add some flower boxes to your outdoor seating area with easy to maintain flowers. This will brighten up your entrance and make a drab shopping center very inviting. 2) I am no interior designer! But I would ask the advice of someone who is and try to update your interior. Granted I did not view your entire seating area but I did not see any kind of plush seating like couches or chairs. Something like that would also be very inviting to the person who wants to come and just drink coffee. 3) revisit espresso machine training. The latte had a great taste and it would only get better if your barista's would pay attention to the steam and process. If your baristas can get really good micro foam and keep the milk at the right temperature your lattes would be the best in Williamsburg. One of the few places that still roasts and grinds their own coffee. Furniture is a bit dated, magazines are old (kind of like dentist offices). A roommate of mine worked at the coffeehouse as a barrista, and if it weren't for her, I don't think I ever would have known it was there. Hidden away in a strip mall often overlooked by the college and tourist crowd, the Coffeehouse offers good food and drinks in a simple cafe setting. Certainly not the classic style of cafe that you might find in Merchant's square, nor the rural style of coffee and sandwich shops you'll find further out of town, but a worthwhile stop if you want somewhere low key to enjoy a cup of something warm. They roast on premises, so you can get some great beans here also. You will also be assailed by production pottery and other trinkets; I suppose good if you're into that sort of thing. All in all, I would recommend getting to know this place if you are local. read more

Perhaps I visited the Coffeehouse at a bad time but I very much doubt I will be back. The barrister impatiently took my order. It seems I mistakenly interrupted the story she was telling the manager when I walked up to the counter. Her attitude was dismissive bordering on rude. She gave me my coffee. I thanked her and she turned her back and said nothing. I sipped the latte and it was perhaps the worst latte I've ever had. It tasted burned and gritty. The Coffeehouse is probably my favorite cafe in Williamsburg: it isn't full of tired tourists and is quite simply a relaxed place to work or socialize. There is outdoor seating, which is always great in a town like this that allows so many months of outdoor socializing. I've started to hit up coffee places in Williamsburg and not go to Starbucks. This place was great....I saw it after eating lunch and was up for some coffee. Nice place.....cool mugs...only complaint I had was that I ordered Iced Coffee and got hot coffee instead...wasn't that big of an issue. They had newspapers and I knew someone that worked there. Looked around and they have breakfast also. Quite....and liked the window setup with the large grinder and bags of coffee beans. I'll probably go there again after I try some of the other places in town.....the place is someplace I'd go just to get away and sit outside to enjoy a cup or two of coffee. read more

Quite possibly the best coffee I've ever had. The Southern Pecan blend is unlike any other flavored coffee I've tried. No bitter after taste, sweet, and sooooo fresh. It will tickle your taste buds and warm your soul. The cafe is usually packed out so I've not hung out inside too much but I purchase their whole bean regularly. My wife and I stopped here on our way to Colonial Williamsburg. The Coffeehouse is in a strip center, and the ambience is what you'd expect from a storefront coffee shop. Nothing spectacular, but nothing horrible. I was on vacation, but needed to participate in a conference call. An earlier review mentioned a knitting store, "The Flying Needles" a couple doors down, so it was perfect for my wife while I was on the call. We each had a house coffee which was very good. We also each had a pastry which were also very good. If we weren't in Williamsburg to see the sites, we would've enjoyed another coffee. read more

On my recent trip to Williamsburg I stopped in a few times to grab coffee and breakfast at the coffeehouse. It is amazing. The selection is incredible and the staff and owner are super friendly. I tried the Charles blend, creme brûlée, Williamsburg blend and the Sumatra and all were very delicious. I also tried the am sandwich with eggs cheese and Virginia ham which blows away and breakfast sandwich I have ever had. I can't wait for my next trip to come back read more

So disappointing. We were looking for blended coffee drinks as we're not big fans of coffee flavor (Love Frappuccinos!) Since The Coffeehouse doesn't have blended drinks, the cashier suggested the iced mocha. She assured me that there was enough dark chocolate in it to offset the coffee flavor. Since we're weren't completely convinced, we only ordered one. That was the only smart thing we did! The iced "mocha" arrived with so much ice that I had trouble even getting the straw in the cup. It wasn't sweetened and if it actually had chocolate in it, there was so little that it couldn't be tasted. I tried to add Splenda, but couldn't stir it in because of all the ice. When I asked the cashier about the quantity of ice and whether I could get another glass or some other solution so I could even stir it, I was told that without all the ice it wouldn't be an iced mocha. What?? I finally found some powdered cinnamon and chocolate on a counter to add to help with the flavor, but again couldn't even stir it in. I finally gave up and threw it away. I asked for a cup of water to get rid of the bitter coffee taste, but none was available, so I went to the grocery store next door and bought a soda. What a waste of money - almost $4 for a cup of bitter ice cubes! read more

This is the best coffee in town. HOWEVER, they have a strict $3.00 minimum, even for debit cards. A medium coffee is less than $3.00. I never carry cash, so sadly, I will never go here regularly and rarely will recommend it. Stopped in for lunch on the way to colonial Williamsburg. The food was fantastic! I'd recommend the quiche (special of the day) and turkey smoked sandwich. Good cheese makes such a big difference! I doubt we'll be in the area again, but I would definitely recommend coming here for lunch. read more

Coffee was an 8/10. Service however was a mess. The woman next to us had waited over 25 minutes for a salad to go, and when she brought it to the manager/owner's attention, she was met with a really dismissive and patronizing attitude and was told that it is what it is because they were short staffed, though there were 5 employees moving around behind an 10 foot long counter, and no one seemed to have any idea what they were doing...it was very chaotic and disorganized, and way too many people in a tiny space. Personally, just based on how she were treated, if I were that woman, I would have been absolutely pissed and never come back. When I finally got to order my drink, I asked for "extra hot" around 5 times because the same manager/owner kept repeating it back incorrectly, and when she eventually gave my order to another woman to make it, she once again neglected to say "extra hot". I had to yell it over her to the barista, and the manager/owner gave me a very nasty look. She was neither friendly, nor polite to anyone and completely ruined my first (and only) experience in that shop, and possibly anyone else in earshot/eyesight at the time I was in there. Given that there are other options for coffee in town, I wouldn't come back here for just decent coffee and crappy service, I'd much rather give my money to people who make great coffee with a smile. read more

One of the worst experiences I've had in a dining type of establishment. When you go to a coffeehouse you want to feel comfortable and drink your coffee or tea. From the rude signs taped to the tables to presumably the owner's (or other managerial staff) attitude, it was the least welcoming environment for our little group. Top that off with one person not even being able to drink their beverage because it tasted that awful and it's totally not worth visiting again. read more

Free WIFI, relaxed attitude, locals sitting around dealing with our writers' blocks and talking about the issues of the day (how hot is it, really?).
