So I've been visiting all the 'local' shops, which means a 30+ min drive to cities to San Jose, Livermore, Antioch. and Benicia. It was an early weekday AM drive to Benicia that brought me to RPP Hobby. I had emailed with the new owner, Nick Degnan, a few times; but wanted to check out his shop. As the new owner of RPP, Nick is renovating the new store space. It's definitely a work in progress, but I will keep visiting to ensure Nick and RPP succeed. Nick was very friendly and answered every question I threw at him. I ended up buying some parts for my Traxxas TRX-4; some had to be shipped and the process was painless. Look forward to visiting Nick and RPP again!

The art supplies are well stocked and great variety. There is a ton of sections that have lots of supplies to do things that I really want to learn how to do. The baking section, for example, has all the cool stuff (and more) that you see and wondered about on the Great British Baking show and The Great Canadian Baking Show (which is actually better than the Great British Baking Show, but that is for another conversation, just watch it!) I come in mostly to get things framed. Their framing department is stellar - a great mix of prices and quality for their ready to go frames, and then they cut mats, and they also can put everything together for you at a very reasonable price and it always comes out beautiful and professional. But then I always wander around and just have so much fun with the seasonal decorations and all the crafty stuff. Let your imagination go wild! I am particularly fond of Michaels because I don't have to worry about my money going towards horrible things, like at the other new place in town. Michaels has no political agenda, its just fun and nice and I am always happy when I have visited. It would be really cool if they had classes to show you how to use some of the fun things they sell!

I went in today to get a small item and check out the selection on another category of item. Picked up what I went in for and spotted something that my daughter would love for her birthday. Then I got to the checkout. It appears that corporate really wants everyone to use the self checkout because you are only allowed to go through the regular checkout if you are paying with cash. I don't carry cash for many reasons and dislike having to ring up my own purchases. Until corporate gives up on forcing people to use self checkout I, unfortunately, will be shopping elsewhere.

However, I was a little disappointed that I didn't see any single card boxes to dig through--only sealed blaster and hobby boxes behind the counter. It's possible I missed them, but from what I could tell, singles weren't readily available. The biggest concern for me was the pricing. As a newer collector, I was already a bit nervous about choosing the right boxes, and seeing some items marked significantly higher than retail made me hesitant to buy. For example, the most recent Topps NBA Holiday Box was priced at $60, even though we had just purchased the same box at GameStop for $35 and it's still widely available at that price. Since it doesn't seem to be a rare or hard-to-find product, the markup felt a little excessive. On the positive side, the customer service was genuinely great. The employee who helped us took the time to talk with us and seemed truly willing to assist with anything we needed. That part of the experience definitely stood out in a good way. Overall, while I appreciated the variety and the friendly service, the pricing made me hesitant to spend money during this visit. I may do a bit more research and give the shop another try in the future, but based on this first impression, I wasn't fully comfortable making a purchase yet.

Several years later, he moved to downtown Novato which is the last location that I visited. A few years ago and after the world changed in March 2020, he found a larger space here and made the move. He carries a full variety of sports cards and memorabilia as well as hosting games on weekends for Magic and Pokemon fans. He also carries card collecting supplies such as sheets, binders, and cases to frame jerseys. I've been fortunate that we are also casual friends so when I am looking for something, he will look for it or source me to where I can get it. With the recent Giants' outfielder from Asia doing a signing event then cancelling it last month, I asked him to help me get two autographed baseballs, one for a friend and the other for me. He's helped me frame jerseys and I've bought cardholders, sheets, and random sports items to give as gifts for friends. I hope to visit their store, likely when I make a road trip to the North Bay.
