Nice store, great customer service, excellent supply of stuffies resembling the wildlife in the area, puzzles, books, educational toys and items, baby toys, knickknacks, etc. prices seem to be a bit high but the quality of items was very high. Really really nice environment and nice staff but got overcharged in tax. I bought a small toy worth $8.65 and was rung up $9.65 even though the Mendocino sales tax was a 7.75%, was rung up closer to 11.5% in sales tax. The shops layout is really cute but the above was concerning. read more

The workers here are absolutely so kind and considerate make sure that you have everything you need and show you where everything is located. If you cannot find it I truly recommend to since the store has a wide variety. It's very a very charming store, great environment, and just overall fun place to visit when you have children. We visited for the first time today with our baby, and I have to say that all three of us were equally excited! There are toys for truly all ages, and the way that the store is organized with lots of color and fun toys makes you feel giddy. I loved being able to look around and find something perfect for my little one, all while spotting a stuffed animal or two I wish I would have added to my own collection! Maybe you watch Christmas movies as you count down the days to Christmas morning. You think about Santa's workshop & wonder if elves are making your toys, right this second. What would that workshop look like? Feel like? What would it offer? That feeling = this store. Village Toy Store is the whimsical epitome of childlike wonder, & you have no choice but to revert back to your kid self when you walk in the door. The toys that this place offers are creative & unique--you probably wouldn't be able to find most of these toys in other stores. You'd have to shop online. Why not go on Amazon & order these for your kid? It'd be easier right? Yes, but it would also suck. It wouldn't bring any magic. It'd be just another item to check off of your to do list. Instead, come to Mendocino, walk the downtown area, enjoy a glass of wine, chill out. Then visit this toy store with your kids (or on your own, because honestly it's awesome regardless), & make family memories. I love this store. I always visit when I'm in Mendo. Still as charming as I remember but for some reason when we came in, I was overheating a bit. We were on a casual hunt for a stuffed animal to adorn my BF's bed, yes he likes to sleep with stuffed animals, have a problem with that? ;-) The shop was empty of usual Mendoites and/or tourists but then again it was the slower part of the year as well. So glad though they're still holding strong in this sleepy village. We were greeted either by the owner and her daughter or a clerk and a kid. Either way I always like a greeting when I step into a shop. Their selection of stuffed animals are small and expensive but I think in places like this you just need to have a Shop Local mentality no matter the price. BF did spot a potential but it was more than he wanted to spend so we sauntered a little longer then mosied on out. I too am surprised I didn't buy something there for my DN's (darling nieces) but then again my mind was more on cooling off than purchasing I guess. When I come back next year perhaps I'll have a better handle on my male "hot flashes"! read more

There's a great selection of toys for younger kids up to the age of 10. we usually go to out of this world in Mendocino for toys for older kids. This is the place to buy a kite as well. This is a fun toy store, they have a great collection of toys, games, coloring books, etc. for kids. I like the variety they have, for both boys and girls. Most of the prices I ran across were reasonable as well. I will also say that I am a sucker for any toy store that has trains set up for kids to play with and look at (such as the picture shows), the toy store I always went into as a kid were like this, and I'm brought back to my own childhood memories when I go into stores like this. Luckily my daughter wasn't with me or I might have come out with a few new toys for her! read more

I LOVE this store. I HAVE to go here every time we're in Mendocino. No "artsy -fartsy" shops for me. I run over to the stuffed animals and a LARGE variety of finger puppets. They are looking me with their gooey sweet eyes. I want to take them all home. One little kid is holding a puppet. I don't want to cause a scene, so I rebuff the puppet and walk away. They have wooden dollhouses, costumes, a fairy wand ( a bit too girly for me), They have Thomas the Tank engine and friends, pirate stuff, jigsaw and plenty of other appealing toys. Excellent shopping experience (they had just what we came looking for!) and I really appreciate that they are working to keep Mendocino open and protect children (it's a toy shop after all!) by asking customers to wear masks. I also saw them deal with someone having a rude meltdown about vaccinations, and they were extremely calm and professional. I feel great about supporting them! read more

I have been coming to this store since I was a child and I still enjoy coming here when in town. That counts for something right? What I enjoy most is that they have toys that I grew up on. Not a lot of commercialized toys that are prepackaged and sold by the dozen. They have toys and special items that are individual and unique. You know when you buy something here for someone the chances are pretty slim that your gift will be a duplicate at a baby shower or birthday party. I hate that... It is worth stopping in for even if it is for just pure nostalgia but you probably will end up buying something for someone. I will definitely bring my kids here, as soon as I have them. :) read more

This is a perfect toy shop! Dragons and fairies, puppets galore, wood toys, retro toys, books and more! I was so lost in my own little make believe world in the aisles of this cute shop! I found myself wanting to buy so many unique, well-made, hard to find toys. I loved the costume collection! How fun! I loved the little toy train that runs around the ceiling! GREAT toy store! Full of non-conventional toys that all of my little ones absolutely loved. I have 2 daughters and 2 nieces, ages 5-11, and all of them talked for a long time after we left there about how much they loved it. It's not your typical Toys R Us by any stretch. Classic toys and books and dolls and puzzles from wall to wall. All of the staff were super friendly and helpful, and encouraged us to play with everything. DONE. LOL. We spent a lot of time in there, and walked away with a bunch of new treasures. So much fun! Does my spirit good to see that places like Village Toy Store still exist. read more

There are many good toy shops left in Bay Area and you get excited to see actual toy shop where you can experience and feel the toy in your hand and play with it. They might not be the cheapest toys but these stuff are educational, fun and great experience. We bought some cute toys for our daughter and also Lunastix Juggling Sticks for us to play at Mendocino cabin. read more

Wonderful toy store full of interesting and unusual toys. We stopped by in the morning and bought a Jim Bird but couldn't get it to work and returned it in the afternoon. The ladies working there let us return it without issue and while we were shopping for another little toy, they fixed our Jim Bird and let us have it although they had already issued the returned. I love the village toy store! It's toys are not only beautiful, but FUN! The atmosphere is so great I could stay in there for hours... Plus, it's not only for children! It's beautiful toys please everyone. They have everything from books to plastic animals. It's not to expensive either. Every time I go to Mendocino there are a couple places I NEED to go to, and Village Toys is one of them. The staff are nice as well; they are helpful, and they always find what you need. GREAT toy store, with a fabulous selection of stuffed animals (including my newest favorite brand, Cate and Levi) and hats and costumes. Tends toward more old-fashioned toys than the plastic Made In China fare. Friendly, chatty, inobtrusive and not overly attentive service. A bit on the expensive side (like most of Mendocino) -- hence the loss of one star. read more

This was a life saver during our day in Mendo. My daughter had been great the entire day but was hitting her breaking point. They have all the cool wood and imagination style toys without out all the branded movie/tv tie in crap. I ain't gonna lie. I had a pretty good time myself. I priced it as moderate, but some of the toys can get pricey. Oh, and the staff is very helpful and nice. And there's a coffee shop right next door. read more
