Along highway 101 between Cloverdale and Hopland is the most awesome place I just can't drive past. This place has a lot of rocks, crystals, fossils, etc... There is so much to see and even more you don't see. You can browse the same shelf several times and still notice something new. This isn't your typical new age hippie dippy crystal twinkie shop. Great rock shop just north of Cloverdale and south of Hopland on US 101. Plenty of rough rocks, fossils, and polished stones. Found some unique items at good prices. I have drove past the 100 times and never went in So I made the plan to go the other day after talking to the owner Saul. The only way I can explain how it was to go somewhere and someone actually knows what they're talking about and has a large assortment of crystals and rocks. For me, it was like walking into the middle of the earth , Beautiful magnificent. Some crystals, were shiny and bright and some were like they came from the middle of the earth It was the most interesting and peaceful experiencesI think I've ever had. What a hidden gem, no pun intended :-) While driving up to Humboldt State University to snag my spawn for the summer, I happened upon a sign for "The Rock Shop". Since I was in a rush, I made a note to stop by on my way back down. I almost kept going by, but veered of the highway and managed to talk my hubby (who did not want to stop) and my teenagers into going into the "boring rock store". Surprise, surprise the whole family was teleported into a magical world of million year old treasures from all over the world, and perhaps other universes. In this little shop you will find rocks, gems, fossils and so much more. The shop is a little depilated shack, do not let this stop you from entering a world full of beautiful, and rare items. Are you in the mood for a megalodon tooth or a snail fossil? Opals? Grape Agates? Geodes. How about a lapis stone from Afghanistan that has bedfellows that were used in the mask of Tutankhamun? Crystal skulls? Anything in between. There are so many amazing items. Even more amazing is the owner, who brings three generations and passion for petrology. His grandfather once had a rock shop in Napa, Ca. He is a wonderful and friendly source of knowledge. This place is wonderful for a true hobbyist, or for someone just cruising by. We left with grape agates, snail fossils, geodes to crack at home, and many other beautiful treats. We know very little about the cost/value of this particular hobby, but found that after some research the owner offered exceptional value for high quality items. You would not find these prices online, and online you will not find a friendly, knowledgeable and kind expert. The other was a bit eccentric and I would expect no less. This was such a fun, and unexpected stop in my day. I will definitely drive back just to visit. Even the hubby and the kids did not want to leave (keep in mind these are the same people who did not want to stop). Little business like this are a dying breed in America. Yes there is parking. This place is a literal diamond in the rough. Don't be scared away by the look because you will find awesome deals. There is very little organization so you have to dig but there are beautiful pieces. The shop owner and the guy who helps him are super friendly and don't mind when you pick up every piece and ask what it is. They also often give deals if you're buying a lot or use cash. HIGHLY recommend if you love crystals. Note: leave the kids who can't keep their hands to themselves in the car, I brought my 3-year-old nephew once and it was a nightmare. read more

How have I not reviewed this yet?! I stop here at the rock shop (look for the truck with a sign off the highway on your way into Ukiah) every time I go north, which is at least once a summer. This is such a great place for rockhounds and kids who like to collect cool stuff. The owner is a nice guy who seems to get saner every time I visit (does that mean that I'm really just slowly losing it?). He is highly knowledgeable and helpful. I like his phosphorescent rocks, they glow under blacklight, especially since there minerals are hard to find (look for longwave if you don't want to have to buy a special, expensive light to see the effect). I always find something great to buy, and the prices are very reasonable. Stop, stretch and browse at this lovely roadtrip mecca the next time you are going north. read more

What is an American road trip without at least one visit to a roadside attraction? It's a banal trip to the grocery store, that's what. While planning my 30 hour getaway to Cloverdale, Hopland, and Ukiah, I read about the Rock shop and absolutely had to go. It's a perk of being the birthday girl... your friends have to go along with your wild idea. The other yelp reviews were so vague, my curiosity was definitely piqued. What does a store selling rocks look like? Do they sell rock candy? Is it some eccentric guy that picks up rocks from the sidewalk and slaps price tags on them? Are they rocks for landscaping? All these questions and more were answered during our visit. Turns out, the man that owns the rock shop is a second generation rock enthusiast. His father built the shop in the 1950's. He has rocks from all over the world. Some of the rocks were quite beautiful and I surprised myself by thinking "Hmm, yeah, I guess $45 for a rock seems reasonable." I saw rocks I've never seen before... really colorful. I ended up buying a small rock with pretty gold flecks on it. It's sitting on my bookshelf now and looks great. read more

Stumbled upon this place on our drive up to City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. It was literally a hole in the wall. Lately had a fascination with crystals and stones so figured I'd pop in to see what they had to offer. There were so many amazing pieces I wanted my hands on but I ended up with a Asian Citrine of some sort per the owner. It's beautiful! Love carrying it with me throughout my work shift. Whenever I head out this way I'd want to stop by and check it out again. Very nice owner and if you pay cash the price can be a bit cheaper than what is on the sticker. Who doesn't love a deal?? This place should be voted "best dive rock shop" because 1) its a billion years old and a dive, and 2) its AMAZING!!! Any type of rock, mineral, fossil, etc that you could possibly ever ever want. Look for it on the right side of the highway when you're heading towards Ukiah. The first time we stopped here was in the early 1970s and we've been coming back ever since. Stopped by this hidden gem on the way home from picking up my daughter. Lost of different stones all sizes and we found a few we liked. Sadly we were rushed because of the fires and the evacuations and road closures. We had to get out before we got stuck with out a way to get home. Love this little store off the beaten path! The owner was a real gentleman and very helpful! We bought a bunch of specimens which would have cost a fortune elsewhere but were very reasonable at this store. This place is definitely interesting. It's a totally run down building housing a ton of rocks and a lot of cobwebs. The rock offerings aren't the best ever, but are definitely worth checking out if you are a collector. The guy who runs the place seems like a bit of an odd bird, but a very good guy. He takes care of about 20 cats, most of whom were stray or abandoned. So you'll see a number of cats running by out front, some of which are friendlier than others. read more

My son and I stopped at this rock shop a few days ago for the first time. What a cool place to browse around. Yes, it's a bit dusty but that didn't bother us a bit. Lots of wonderful rocks, stones, fossils, etc. to check out. The owner is a friendly guy who lets you just wander in peace if that's what you want. Call me partial but I am the baby sister of the man who now ownes the Rock Shop on the highway on 101 in Hopland. We are 4th generation rock hounds and lapidarists. Our grandfather was well known in Napa for his Opals.I was just in the shop on Easter weekend and was amazed at some of the beautiful specimans and stones I saw .
