Edmonton is a city that has no shortage of coffee culture. You don't have to look very far to find a hip cafe or a specialty roaster - they're practically on every block. However, not many have grown and expanded quite the way that The Colombian has. I also don't think that anyone else can say that they get their beans from their own family farm... In Colombia. At the helm of the business? Thee actual Colombian himself, Santiago Lopez along with partner Kristin Panylyk. They opened their first full-service coffee shop with a roastery on site in 2018 - this flagship shop still operates today in Glenora and its where all of the beans get roasted. The business has now expanded to seven locations, including one in Saskatoon, each one acting as a hub in its respective community. EDify Magazine named The Colombian as Best Coffee 2025 and there's certainly no disputing the amount of impact that this Edmonton success story has had on the city's coffee scene. I visited the original Glenora location on a sunny Saturday afternoon and you cannot miss The Colombian's signature marquee signage that lets you know (in lights) that you are in the right place for coffee. The cafe was absolutely bumpin' with every table occupied and a long queue to place orders. Santiago Lopez was buzzing around the space greeting customers and taking the time to give detailed bean recommendations. The vibe is fresh and modern with light woods and black accents. The cafe certainly feels like the place to be on a weekend afternoon and I can only imagine that the rest of their six locations are exactly the same. (In fact, their Parkallen spot happens to be my "neighbourhood cafe" but I usually like to visit the OG when I'm writing.) While the interior of the cafe was quite busy, I found solace outside on the adjoining patio. I will admit right away that I am not much of a coffee purist but I do know what I like. I could order a latte or a mocha but I almost always gravitate toward the seasonal drinks menu (if there is one). These menus are usually where you'll find interesting flavours and creative ideas from the baristas - which is what I'm always on the lookout for. On this visit The Colombian was serving up an Orange Blossom Latte (Cardamom and fresh orange syrup, espresso, steamed milk. Floral and bright - $7.25 for regular size) which fit my desire perfectly. Served with a classic latte art look, this might have been my favourite drink that I've ever gotten at The Colombian! Not only could I taste the coffee, a nice robust roast, but the warming cardamom and hint of orange was very enjoyable. Not too sweet, not too bitter. The balance was just right and this felt like the type of latte that I could see myself ordering again and again. A pleasure! The Colombian offers more than only coffee and you'll also find a food menu. Most items lean toward breakfast but there are some sandwiches as well. I've been a fan of their Loxocado (a smoked salmon avocado toast) in the past but unfortunately it no longer appears on the menu. In its absence I chose the Avocado Toast (Avocado, cilantro, garlic, onion, lime, walnut oil, hempseed - $12.00) with an egg added ($1.50). Crusty bread was well-coated in a thick layer of smashed avocado and I really enjoyed the citrus notes to boost the flavour. Very bright and fresh! The textural elements were great too. I cut into the poached egg expecting a satisfying cascade of golden yolk but sadly the yolk had been cooked through. None the less, a decent avocado toast. However, I definitely missed the Loxocado version. Lastly, I was excited to try their Colombian Guava Croissant (Pastry stuffed with guava filling - $4.50). This reminded me a lot of the Empanadas Queso y Guava that I often get from Paraiso Tropical. I thought that it was very cool that they found a way to make a cafe version of this - a croissant instead of an empanada. I was very impressed by this tasty pastry! Not only was the croissant deliciously buttery but the sweet and jammy guava filling really helped to add a playful Latin spin. It's really nice to see some menu items that actually reflect the Colombian heritage - a great accompaniment to the coffee! The Colombian has set their focus on so much more than running multiple coffee shops. The heart of the business is all about sourcing sustainable, traceable, fairly priced beans. But there's more! They offer coffee subscriptions, fundraisers, and even coffee classes. They've got a blog. They've got a podcast. Plus there's a specialty coffee shop on wheels called The Coffee Mule that can be rented for events. Is there anything that The Colombian can't do?? It doesn't seem so. My boyfriend and I heard good things about this place so we decided to check it out. The parking lot out front was pretty much full, but luckily we managed to snag the last spot available. I ordered the regular Vanilla Latte with oat milk and my boyfriend got the large Mocha with oat milk. The lady taking our orders was friendly and nice. And they served our drinks right to our table. I absolutely loved my latte. It was creamy, robust, and very smooth. One of the smoothest lattes I've ever had. The oat milk complemented the espresso well. It had the perfect sweetness level. The Mocha was pretty tasty as well. It had a rich chocolate-y flavor. My latte was so well-done that my boyfriend kept stealing sips from my drink. We had a great time at this place and I can't wait to visit again. read more

There is a reason why the Colombian always has a long line-up (well, plenty of reasons actually...). They make great coffee and drinks in a cozy space. I really log their London fog and they also made a great autumn spice latte earlier this year. This has become a regular spot for us to meet up with friends before taking our dogs for a walk in the neighbourhood. Pro-tip: their patio is pup-friendly. All the food is great- just really no gluten- friendly options. The coffee is on par with the best this city has to offer. Snack and eats prices seem a little high, but so is the rent in this hot Bonnie Doon neighbourhood and the heart of the French Quarter. I've tried everything but their weekend-only breakfast options and everything is great. I had to ask for a fork to finish my breakfast bagel- it was full and juicy. If you don't specify, your egg comes soft poached in vinegar- but that's how I like it. My friend always asks for her egg to be hard. To be honest the medium poached might be less messy to eat before work. I love the ricotta cheese. Park in the back, if there's room, or on the side street on the other side of the daycare. Finally made it out to check out The Colombian Coffee & Roastery. The coffee scene is gradually getting better in town. It's next door to Vie's for Pie's. We dropped in Friday afternoon (around 2:00pm) and it was busy. Lots of people on laptops working. The inside is very modern and minimalistic. There's quite a bit of seating too. The menu is split into coffee, not coffee, brews & grapes, cold drinks, kids, pour over and batch brew coffee. The food menu consists of smaller type eats: toast, sandwiches and tapas. Really reasonably priced. We saw a cured meat board ($8.50) come out that looked pretty good. - Latte ($5.30) - M liked it. I asked for a large but they only charged us for a regular as we opted to drink our cups in-house. Nice! - Chai latte ($5.00) - this was one of the better chai latte's I've had in the city. I'm definitely a fan! I've been noticing the sign outside forever and I have to say, that sign is what got me in there. A giant flashing sign that says "COFFEE" is a certain way to get me inside. I'm a coffee addict. I go in and the decor is nice and a lot bigger than I expected, it extends all the way to the back. It was also busy! Looks like a lot of the demographic is working professionals who either work remote or are there to have meetings. I work remote so I would be down to come there and grab a table. I didn't get a good peek at the outlet situation but it's probably good if there were so many professionals there. The cold brew was unreal. It was AMAZING. I could have had like 10 of them they were so great. Macchiato wasn't great and I only say this with love. It was presented nicely but whatever it was just wasn't a Macchiato. Staff was friendly and we asked a bunch of questions about the business that they were happy to answer! I was excited to try them out and not disappointed that I came! The coffee here is incredible... They really have kept it very simple but do it awesome. They've got pour over, they've got Drip, they've got espresso... And all I have to say is the avocado toast is f***ing incredible! The softest bread and they add hemp hearts! I think it's the best in town! I went to the new "French Quarter" location. We had driven by many times, and since I was on a "walk-about" decided to stop in and check it out. We like to support local businesses when we can. Nice atmosphere. I saw that they had ceramic mugs they usually serve coffee in. I asked about the potter who made them. Turns out they are from BC and not local to Edmonton. A bit disappointing. The staff however was very friendly. I ordered a small cappuccino for takeout. I can say that is was SMALL and it was a cappuccino. But the price was BIG. Cost me about $1 a sip. I love this coffee! And I love that the owners of the roastery decided to expand into a coffee shop too. I stopped in today with a friend on our walk in Glenora. It was busy! but the line kept moving and we were able to find a seat. The owners, Kristin and Santiago, are very personable and aim to make your experience a most pleasant one from start to finish. They always make time to say hello and chat and if you have any questions about their coffee, they are more than happy to share. They roast all of their coffee with beans from all over the world and in particular, Colombia. The owners have a family coffee farm there and import these beans to create a lovely roast known as the Santa Rita. The space is classic/modern with wood finishing and modern lighting. Tons of natural light which I love. Soft music was playing in the background to add to the chill and positive vibe. They offer a variety of coffee drinks and tea and a few light fare goodies. I decided to get one of their pour over coffees and my friend ordered a latte. Both were delicious! We also shared a guava croissant that was equally yummy. There is bar seating at the front and some tables along the side with room for bigger parties at the back. The roastery is located in behind the seating area as well as an education space for coffee tastings. All in all a wonderful experience and they just opened! I am looking forward to seeing how this place evolves and, of course, coming here to work and play while enjoying a delicious coffee. read more

What can I say that others haven't already done so? First off, owners Kristen & Santiago are a lovely couple who have built their business up from scratch. Their work ethic and enthusiasm for their business really shows and I think that's why this coffee shop has been so successful since they opened up recently. I came here on a Sunday with the hubs and 2 year old. We got their shortly before 10:30 and glad we did because there were still seats to be had. But by the time we left, all the tables and chairs were filled with happy customers getting their Sunday morning coffee fix. If there are no spots to be had, I know there is limited outdoor seating for the summer and if nothing else, take your drinks to go! Glenora is such a beautiful neighborhood to walk around and escape to. I ordered their chai latte with soy milk and it was really good! I'll admit I'm a bit of a Chai snob - finding it can be hit or miss depending on where you order. This place ranks top 3 for Chai's in the city in my opinion. It's a bit of a sweeter Chai and there's the option of having cinnamon added to the top - yum! My husband loves the coffees here - nothing new here! We also ordered their guava and almond croissants - please try the guava croissant! In Colombia it is very common to find guava in pastries so I was happy to see their iteration on a delicious guava pastry here. They also offer a limited made-to-order menu of breakfast items like avocado toast and a nutella/strawberry/hempseed toast with bread sourced from Boulangerie Bakery. The space is beautiful and bright and natural! I can see myself visiting this space a lot. This time around I tried their Colombian breakfast sandwich with turkey it was really good I very much enjoyed it. I came with my cousin it was his first time he has well had the Colombian breakfast sandwich he had his with salmon you said it was really good he got a slow drip coffee with she enjoyed very much. I have wanted to swing by here since it opened but didn't have a chance until this afternoon. The shop is in the lovely neighborhood of Glenora and there is plenty of parking in front and even if the parking was full, there would be no trouble find street parking! The cafe has a decent amount of seating, and the staff were super friendly and greeted me as soon I walked in the door and before I left! This would me a nice quiet place to catch up with a friend or even take a date! I ordered the vanilla iced coffee as it was 21 degrees today and iced anything sounded like a good idea! I watched it being prepared and was intrigued when I saw it being shaken in something like a cocktail shaker. I love that idea! Because it was shaken, the vanilla was evenly mixed and enjoyed with every sip of the ice latte...as opposed to just having the vanilla, espresso, & milk all dumped into a cup and stirred or worse, not stirred at all and having your first sip be all sugar and your last, all bitter espresso. There is only one size available in the iced coffee, and pricewise, it is at a bit of a premium if you compare to chain coffee shops; however, I would say it is in line with smaller coffee shops offering premium coffee produced in small batches. I have a soft spot for small batches coffee, as there is such a difference in taste. There's no bitterness and I imagine this if I were to order drip coffee or espresso, that I wouldn't need to add any sugar or milk because it would just be a disservice to the coffee. I will certainly have to visit again to try the drip coffee and pastries because on a hot day, I went the iced latte route :) read more

Great coffee. We have bought coffee and their coffee liquor from the 124th St. market. We both find their coffee is quite delicious. We didn't realize they had a shop that was so close to us. The café is very well decorated -simple but refreshing. They sell all sorts of coffees and have milk alternatives. They also sell avocado toast, Nutella and strawberry toast, a Colombian toast which consists of meat and cheese and other pastries. "Born and raised in Colombia, Santiago was surrounded by coffee culture and hardworking farmers. Fast forward to today, Santiago's family now owns a coffee farm of their own and asked if he would bring the family coffee to the Canadian coffee connoisseur. He went one step further and together with his partner in crime, Kristin, threw himself into the world of coffee. Multiple trips to Colombia to tour farms, and to meet the producers and the families who pick the coffee, inspired Santiago and Kristin to start a micro coffee roastery right at home in Alberta!" This project has been one of passion for this couple. They have had a lot of roadblocks that they have had to overcome to bring YEG their family's best. Previously only available at farmers markets, handmade shows and through their website, they now have a brick and mortar shop with "Vi's For Pies" as their neighbour. Santiago and Kristin are warm and inviting and will teach you everything that there is to know about coffee. From the growing of the beans, to managing to get the beans shipped back to Canada, and to the whole roasting experience. Quite a lot of work goes into your morning cup of coffee! The coffee is grown ethically/fair trade; the surrounding farms think that the Santa Rita Farm in Columbia has got a great thing going. Happy farmers means a great product. Santiago loves his beans, and it shows! He will proudly show you the different types of beans that come in for roasting and how each one is different. The aromas that were in the air during my visit were heavenly. I was surprised by how short a roasting session actually was. It was only a few minutes! Technology does take its effect on roasting as well. Temperature, humidity, outdoor weather and many other factors go into how the end result will taste. And the taste... The Santa Rita Columbian roast is my favourite so far. I normally like anything from Ethiopia because of the complex flavours that the beans can present. The Santa Rita is bright and flavourful, and will make you want a second cup! I am beyond thrilled to be able to grab a latte made with some of the best beans I have ever had the pleasure of drinking. read more

A great new coffee shop located in Glenora! It opened just 5 months ago. Located right next to Vis for Pies, where there is ample street parking. There is lots of seating inside and some outside as well. Lattes were really good, more of a darker roast. And there were several croissant options, which I'll have to try next time! Hell--its the best I have had in Canada--and my spouse and I have drank a ton of different coffee! We even had that weird a$$ "wild Thai civet" coffee--don't ask. My spouse and I went through a 5 lb bag of "Anasora" in a shamefully short time. I have had 3 or 4 of their varietals and have yet to have anything below the level of "knock your socks off". I would argue that the Value for money is still low because I would rather sit at the ok looking good tasting credo and pay 2$ less for the regular sized almond latte( Columbia charged me 6.35$ ). For me, I've struggled with a love/hate relationship with coffee through out my life. Some days it is just so acidic and makes me jittery. The Colombian Coffee is smooth and rich in flavour. I'll be going back for some ground beans so I can brew at home. I follow this company on Instagram as well. Miserable, sour coffee, I'm sad to say. All I want is freshly roasted coffee that's not under-roasted (sour) or over-roasted (burnt). Sadly this seems too much to ask in Edmonton. NXT Roasters used to roast sensational tasting beans, but somethin's up over there and there's nothing remarkable about their coffees any longer, sadly. Anyway, the Colombian (not Columbian) coffees are pretty awful. The after-taste was so bitter and sour that it turns my stomach to think of it. I just want tasty coffee, like NXT used to roast/sell. :( read more
