The Comic Shop is one of the best comic book stores I've ever been to, including the Lower Forty Eight. Whenever I travel Outside I pine for this place. They've got a little bit of everything here. I do wish that the RPG selection was better though I understand that they need to carry what sells. Of course you can still find some gems boxed away. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable about their stuff and have even taught me some things I didn't know before. Considering that we're in the middle of Alaska the prices are reasonable. Visiting Fairbanks and wife pointed out this comic shop, love brick & mortar LCS and in Alaska, score !!! Glad we stopped, nice selection of comics and easy to look as it is organized pretty well. The store also has gaming supplies and what looked like a gaming room. Each section seems to have its own Rep (subject matter expert), the young lady I spoke to in the comic section was super friendly and knowledgeable. She helped me find (2) books that I have been looking for and at a reasonable price. Came to Alaska and was able to end a long hunt successfully. read more

So I absolutely love the Comics, miniatures, and video game section of this store. It is hands down one of my favorite places to walk around for hours. I go three times a week at minimum for minis and to ask about new board games and video games. Spent hundreds if not thousands from them on just my table top gaming supplies. All of the employees up front are amazing people and really are super helpful. However, the issue is the magic the gathering section in the back. I've been playing magic since the mid 90s and even took in the role of 2nd level judge for a few years in North Carolina. I admit I don't play that much anymore and have all but sold most of my collection. That being said i go in and browse the singles and routinely pick up a card or two my son (15 and just getting started playing) wants for his commander deck. Buying magic cards should be a fun an exciting experience. Opening packs, getting a card you want, or just browsing the stores inventory to see the expensive cards. All this leads me to the employee that is back there most of the time speaking down to magic players. I've heard him downplay and practically degrade multiple people over what they are talking about or a question they ask him. I've seen players looking at a 2-300 dollar card and ask him a question about it where he gives them that elitist attitude he has and that customer walks. It's terrible to see and the whole vibe back there is completely different than the rest of the store. As a store that caters to the local magic crowd you should be trying to get repeat customers, especially when its too easy to just buy online. I fully support my local gaming store, as I been waiting patiently on them to get some Heroquest and hopefully Heroscape game systems in the future, and have been a solid customer for the past five years. I unfortunately can't see myself going to the magic counter anymore to listen to an employee bad mouth customers like that. I will be taking my business for magic related items to another local gaming store and I'll be recommending other players to go there as well. Its a smaller store (for now atleast) but they are upgrading and most of the community i play commander with, 10-15 other players, have all agreed that we won't be going to the comic shop for magic cards anymore. read more

The owner is very disrespectful. I called to discuss helping the kids at the local high school with a business sponsorship and he hung up on me. When I phoned him back later on he told me he's not impressed with my presentation. It's for the kids for crying out loud!!! I gave 100% effort and he would not even listen before hanging up on me. I have visited 100's of LGS's in my 13 years in the military and this is by far the best store I have had the privilege of frequenting. They are proud to be Alaskan, proud to be local, love their military customers and will often carry items if you request them. They give the highest cash and store credit for magic the gathering singles out of any store in AK or buylist online. read more

Ordered a prerelease Dominaria Booster Box, which included an exclusive prerelease card. Showed up to pick up my order and the store was completely out of both. When asked about when I could expect both was told I could pick up my box the same day everyone else can order/buy the cards and would not be receiving my prerelease exclusive card at all. When I asked for a refund since I would not be getting what I paid for, I was told they wouldn't refund the money. So basically I was told I am NOT getting what I paid for, would not be getting my money back, and essentially the entire attitude was they didn't care. I am/was a regular customer, but at this time I am seriously considering never returning to this store again. read more

Good selection and lots of modeling stuff (Warhammer 40,000 etc) but the prices are so-so. Most of the staff is pleasant and knows what they're talking about (especially the female employees!) but there are two other employees that will follow you through the store and if you ask them for help they'll roll their eyes and use a tone that is far from professional. So if I want something and don't want to wait on shipping or if I want to kill an hour and those two employees aren't there I'll go. Otherwise I steer clear. read more

I have been a patron of the Comic Shop for as long as I remember. With its unique atmosphere that even the most casual geek can't help but love, it is a great place to find anything you might need that you aren't quite willing to wait to ship from online. The Comic Shop has friendly, knowledgeable staff that are willing to help you find what you are looking for in their vast stock of games, manga, anime, memorabilia, comics, cards, plushies, posters, cosplay items, dice, Warhammer and other assorted figures, candy, and weapons, not to mention the random collectables they get in for limited amounts of time. I go to the comic shop frequently, but one visit that sticks out in my mind is when I took my friend there for the first time. My friend lived within 5 min of the Comic Shop, but had never been there. I thought this was an outrage as her family are superhero geeks. When she went in, she was, if anything, mad at herself for not going sooner. We went around the entire store and spent close to 45 minutes in there. After a while, we went to check out with our finds of a Hetalia wallet and Cactaur cellphone charm. We spent $25 in total and had a rant with the cashier about twilight 'graphic novels'. It was fun and my friend had a great time. When you first walk in, you are met with a view of a plethora of wall scrolls hanging from the ceiling, a wall of manga and a display of plushies, anime inspired bags, and general cosplay items. Further down the row are the arrays of Dr. Who, Pokémon, and Final Fantasy figures. To the left, there are shelves containing games of the non-electric kind. They have D&D sets, Warhammer boards, card games of differing notoriety, novelty games, and just plain old board games. There are also anime displays containing a host of anime from Japan, China and Korea. In the back of the store, there are multiple racks and shelves containing comic books of just about any kind, including Marvel, D.C., and independent comics. The racks are shoved to the sides on the weekends for differing free play or tournaments for the games they sell. Most of the tournaments or free play I have heard about are Warhammer, Magic, the occasional D&D, and back in the day, Pokémon. In the middle of the store, there is a central display containing cards, wallets, belt buckles, cosplay jewelry, kunai, shuriken, and assorted video games and systems. The surrounding shelves contain card holders and collectables of various sorts. There are chains of plushies hanging from the ceiling around the center display. There is also a small display to the side holding video game system accessories. To the far right of the store, the supplies of Warhammer, D&D, and other games of similar nature are held. There is a dice display as you walk into the section, which is host to percentiles, d-6 through d-30, a diverse array of dice bags, and novelty dice. There are various shelves containing D.C. comics, Munchkin, and Magic as well. The front counter contains mini displays of candy of differing nationalities, DVDs, Japanese CDs, movie and games soundtracks, books, and small collectables. Behind the counter are specialty energy drinks, costumes and weapons. They have several different kinds of weapons. They have Axes, staffs, Swords, daggers, maces, and gauntlets. The prices at the Comic Shop are about average. There are some things that are slightly above the price online or in the states, but if you factor in shipping, most is the same or cheaper. The Comic Shop is located in the mall by the Mayflower Buffet, right next to Kinko's, so it is a pretty easy location to get to. Go check it out! read more

Fantastic store. Knowledgeable staff. I've probably seen about 8 decent gaming/comic stores in the last three years in various cities, and this is my favorite by far. There's just a wide range of things to purchase, and I invariably can find something to spend my money on. Also, regarding the comments another reviewer made on the "owner" of the store. The "owner" of the store doesn't come to Fairbanks often, so I am assuming he is speaking of the manager. The manager is a very reasonable guy who has always provided excellent customer service in my experience. He's friendly, if a bit gruff, and he actually cares about his patrons. If he told someone he's not impressed with their presentation, then that person likely did a really, really bad job because I know that same manager has helped out multiple local charities and schools over the years. read more

I really, really, REALLY love this place. It's like a piece of heaven for me..! They have all the manga, merchandise, and comics you can imagine. So far, all the series that I haven't been able to find in Barnes and Noble, I was able to find at this store. Also, they often have big sales that allow me to buy more stuff..! Haha. I managed to get a Hetalia wall scroll for $9.99; it was such a good deal I almost felt wrong for taking it. My only nitpick would have to be how silent it always is. I think something that could improve the atmosphere would be maybe some music playing (A custom playlist of Vocaloid, mixed in with some mild rock would fit) . Also, a couple of times I had to wait for anyone to come to the counter. Great store, I will definitely be coming here again (to blow all of my free money) ! read more

I was in Fairbanks for a week on a business trip and found this gem of a comic shop. It is pretty impressive for such a remote location. It has everything from comics to rpg and table top games. You could even find 2nd edition AD&D books. They had an extremely large selection of Warhammer miniatures. The staff was extremely friendly and very personable. read more

Ive been going the comic shop ever since early elementary school for everything from trading cards, posters, candy, drinks, or that random specialty board game me and your friends wanted. Its employees are great people, and they know everything in their store. If you ever have a question about anything you can find, they can help you no problem. They host tournaments almost daily, and there are always rewards and never any cost, so don't worry about not having the entry money. Its also a great place to meet friends. I have made plenty of important friends from going to the comic shop. They have tables to play matches against friends for any game, and its a comfortable area to play. The comic shop as a huge selection of products. The comic section is vast and expands a number of isles all around the store. They have classic Japanese manga and every superhero you grew up with. They have a retro game section, with n64, super nintendo, NES, and dreamcast products along with a number of others. The comic shop can really cover a number of areas. Their candy section is wonderful, with a number of rare snacks you loved from your childhood, or snacks from other areas of the world you cant even pronounce. The comic shop aslo specializes in trading card games, and they carry every popular game and stay up to date with them. The tournaments for these trading card games have huge showings and there is tons of bartering, trading and friendships made. The comic shop also has plenty of specialty items, like ancient weapons such as swords, nunchucks, throwing knives and maces. They have plushies, action figures, board games, and dice. Every locale needs a location for their socially outcast individuals and hipsters to hang out. For Fairbanks, Alaska that place is The Comic Shop. It should be noted that this is "The" Comic Shop, as in the only one within a reasonable driving distance. That being said, it is an excellent nerd shop which carries everything from Magic: the Gathering to Warhammer 40k. They also have a very healthy selection manga and comics. I will agree with the other reviewers of this fine establishment that the prices at The Comic Shop are very reasonable once you take into account the shipping fees that make everything in Alaska seem unreasonably expensive. The workers are kind and do their best to help you find whatever you are looking for. The debatably best part of The Comic Shop though, is its clientele. My girlfriend, beloved goddess of dice and d-pads, and I were in The Comic Shop one afternoon to peruse the wares. As we walked around the store we started to people watch. We moved to the center portion of the rear of the store where they keep the indie comics and made it look like we were debating what to purchase. This area gives a very good view of the entrance and we were able to watch all sorts of people walk into the shop. We observed garden variety nerds, otaku girls, parents bringing in children to buy the newest Pokemon merchandise, and, most memorable of all, a gentleman dressed as Captain America. This was not a pushover either, he even had Cap's shield. My girlfriend and I suppressed our giddy sniggers of nerdy delight long enough to reposition ourselves so our grins wouldn't be noticed. For those of you who don't know, Captain America is a Marvel Comics character who has been fairly important to one of their more signature story series; The Avengers. It was strange to watch this iconic Marvel character move straight towards the DC comics section and start browsing the Batman comics. We were not the only ones in the store to notice this blasphemy. One of the players in the gaming area of the store also noticed and walked over to the Captain. He gently tapped the costumed customer and the shoulder and patiently waited for him to look away from the Joker comic he was reading. Mr. Gamer asked him what he was doing in the DC comics area when he should clearly be in the Marvel area reading about the triumphs and adventures of his cohorts and enemies. To this Captain America replied that it would be too self-centered, and therefore un-American of him to read only about people he knew. Using his wit, Mr. Gamer replied that being American involves a whole lot of being self-centered. Their discourse ended there. Eventually Captain America left and my girlfriend and I were able to let out the laughter we had been holding in since his conversation. The Comic Shop is indeed a wonderful place full of wonderful people and a good variety of merchandise. As far as negatives are concerned, the only thing that comes to mind is that it can feel cramped in their when gaming is going on. This store could definitely benefit from moving to a larger location. I give The Comic Shop a four out of five for affordable prices, varied merchandise, and knowledgeable and caring staff. This is my little place to scape the world were I feel great and don't feel like a total looser. The only thing I dont like is some items are very over priced so I end up buying online but always get my plushies here and my comics and manga and even dvds or figures of I find the price good. I enjoy the environment the staff is super friendly and makes me laugh. They feel like friends more than strangers sometimes. The most bad experience I had was going to a magic tournament cuz it actually smelled so bad!! I had to leave the room. Never went back to that room again. But I go to the comic shop ones or twice a week and I like just walking around and probably buy something every pay day . read more

I'm surprised how awesome this place is for being in the middle of Alaska. This store beats out a fair amount of other comic shops from back home in Seattle. I visited the store out of curiosity more than anything else, and found the staff to be extremely helpful and welcoming even though I didn't know much about comics. This is a bit of a belated review. I grew up in Fairbanks. I met my best friend Torg up on the University of Alaska campus. He was getting chased by a couple of kids who desisted once I threatened to pound them. We bonded over comics. We read them all: Harvey, Gold Key, Archie, Warren and, of course, DC and Marvel. When the Comic Shop opened, we were there that first Saturday. It was awesome. The two owners had a dog who ruled the floor. I can't remember if it was a bulldog or something else. But he/she was chill. Super relaxed. I think we went there for hours every Saturday. In the winter, there wasn't much else to do in Fairbanks. Gets a bit cold up there. So we'd collect our funds and go through the new titles and the old ones. The older books were right by the door so when we'd be perusing, a cloud of frost washed over us anytime a patron entered or left. Torg and I always left with a stack of books. I was bound and determined to get all the Journey into Mystery Thors and early Iron Mans. I think he was paired with Doctor Strange too. Of course, we were infants then. Tiny babies. So we still hankered for Richie Rich, Little Lotta, Little Dot, Hot Stuff and Casper the Friendly Ghost. We were regulars. We'd get the nod. "Hey," we'd say without saying it. And I forget which of the partners took interest in our music tastes, but they assisted there. Eventually, we started looking through the records. I loved the Grateful Dead's cover art but hated the music. I remember being introduced to Led Zep's Presence and thinking, "What the hell?" They'd say, "Paul McCartney's Wings is way better than Elton John." I said, "But Island Girl ... ?" I got back a look of disgust. We took that seriously. The Comic Shop was our refuge. Far more than the geeks on "The Big Bang Theory." This was quasi religious. I lived about 14 miles from the store. I'd ride my bike there. No sweat. Just to go to the store. I barely had two quarters to rub together but the guys who ran the shop would say, "We'll trade. What have you got?" Turns out I had a stack of Sgt. Rocks that kept me in comics for some time. I have not been there for years. I went back while on assignment for a newspaper I worked for back in the 1980s. Feelings of nostalgia swept through me. I bought some titles. It wasn't the same. The faces behind the counter had changed. But the spirit remained. I suspect as I read some of the reviews that the shop's essence remains strong. It's a long legacy of community service.
