I really wanted to like Common Good Community Cafe/Resturant because I appreciate its social mission. Unfortunately, my experience left me feeling unwelcome. Upon a past visit a woman in a leadership role, who had a British accent, asked if I would volunteer to make popovers. I politely declined and explained that I was on vacation and preferred to support the café as a donating customer. Her response surprised me. She immediately went into a rant about millionaires, suggested I look at the multimillion-dollar homes up the street, and seemed to make assumptions about me and why I wasn't volunteering. I'm not a millionaire, but more importantly, I don't think anyone should have to explain or defend why they choose to be a patron rather than a volunteer. You can have a wonderful social mission while still treating visitors with dignity, kindness, and respect. The interaction was odd, unnecessarily aggressive, and really turned me off to the place. For a very different experience, we enjoyed Clark Point Café across the street--the food was excellent, and the people were genuinely warm and friendly. read more

What a wonderful asset to the Southwest Harbor community - a truly special place! They have a great mission and are so kind. Visited on a Thursday morning and enjoyed excellent coffee, oatmeal, and popovers with berry jam and brown sugar, all while listening to live music played beautifully under the tent outside. The space is peaceful and surrounded by flowers, and they provide such a welcoming environment for folks of all walks of life. Breakfast is a "pay what you can" situation, and they have a donation box as you enter. The donations are used to support soup and meal efforts for the local community in the off-season, when budgets and resources are much tighter. I SO strongly recommend visiting and supporting their work by way of enjoying tasty food and good company. Plus, much less crowded than another highly trafficked popover destination on the island! read more

This is a place that serves the best popovers on the island,yes, better than Jordon's Pond. Also coffee, tea, homemade jam, butter, and the best oatmeal. This is a fundraiser for their soup kitchen. Open Wednesday -Sunday 7:30-11:30. Donations are greatly appreciated. They supply food all winter long to those in need. If you want something made with love, come to the Common Good Soup Kitchen. They have popovers, a New England staple, Friday- Sunday at 7:30am- around noon I think. The lady gets up at 5am every morning to make these popovers and you can taste and feel that in each popover. They had the best maple bacon butter for it as well as some strawberry and blueberry jams. They ask $5 donation per popover and it's worth it. They also do ukele performances on the weekend there (I think Sunday but not sure). The staff are so incredible there. read more

Had a chance to stop here before leaving ME and on their last weekend of the season! The best concept ever (as posted in pictures below) everything is donation based to help the locals who might not be able to make ends meat after tourist season is over. Popovers were DELICIOUS! The common good kitchen, café is unique, and they feature music on Sunday morning of local musicians. The majority of these are ukulele players. I love the whole story behind it meager beginnings and the fruition of having the seawall dining room before it went its way. Then they ended up in town with the post office a couple doors down. It's just a happy, joyful place and low-key with mainly volunteers, putting the popovers and the juice and oatmeal out there for folks to share in. Make sure if you go to Southwest you plan on going and experiencing that special place! I live off the island about 40 minutes away but I am going to plan on being there on a Sunday morning so I can sing along with some great tunes the musical group chooses to play.and read more

I can't rave enough about this breakfast restaurant located in Southwest Harbor for many reasons, here are a few. 1. This isn't a For-Profit restaurant but a community based kitchen with multiple volunteers who have mastered the art of making delicious popovers. All the food here is free, but donations are expected unless you are in need and down on your luck. The money they collect over the busy season is then used to feed many local families who may not have the means to do so. 2. The popovers here were amazing. We were originally going to buy some while in Acadia but decided to hold off once we saw the flyer for this restaurant at our camp site. Thankfully we did, the popovers were fresh out of the oven, the volunteer staff was incredible and the outdoor dining was a great start to our morning. In the end, if you are in the area you need to stop here. The food is great and the cause is even better! read more

Executive Director Laurie Ward was extremely aggressive, rude and racist. We were the only group in line, and she remarked to my wife who is a person of color, "We have oatmeal if you know what that is." She then continued her aggressive and racist behavior until we left. read more

I absolutely love coming here while staying in southwest harbor. It is open 7 days a week and we have been lucky enough this year to come while it is a little bit warmer. Last year we came at the end of June and had to sit inside because of the cold. This year we came the first week in July and it has been just warm enough to sit outside and enjoy the nice weather. We heard about this place from the locals and we decided to try it last year. It is not some place you would normally find as a breakfast joint. They are a not for profit eatery that serves only popovers and porridge (oatmeal). All payment is donation only. So if you don't like either of those, this place is not for you. I saw a sign that said two popovers and a drink go for $10 around town. So if you don't know how much to give that is an idea of how much. The pop overs are truly amazing!! Nice and light with a crunchy outside. Just enough softness inside. They have cinnamon butter and walnut maple butter if you don't want plain butter. They also have strawberry and blueberry jam to go on it. They have a porridge that is out of this world. It's amazing because they make it in a double boiler. They have toppings for it like nuts, raisins, syrup, honey, sugar if you are into that. They also have coffee, juice, and water. You serve yourself and can back for more food, just make sure you can finish it. You are also responsible for picking up your own dishes. It's such a neat place so if you are ever in the area you have to check it out! Just make sure to get there before 11:30 am since they close then. read more
