We were quoted 13K, which we agreed upon. That amount was surpassed greatly. It was evident that copy and paste was used for the majority of legal documents. The work was not done by a lawyer, but a legal assistant. There were spelling errors, delays, poor communication and failure to mail documents. On one invoice was a 30 minute charge to mail a letter. Maybe they walked to the mailbox??? The final straw was this letter. There is no more money in the estate. Fitzwater received over $20,000 for the guardianship and simple probate. They were paid from the estate. The conversation with Jonathon today involved him telling my husband that Oregon Law states that legal fees were to be paid before other creditors. My husband was NEVER informed of this law and paid outstanding medical bills with the little amount that was left in the estate. Jonathon also stated that "he talked with the partners about waiving the unpaid invoice and they declined". Unreal, the firm got over 20K for the "work" in the case. Do not hire them unless you have unlimited funds.

My experience with Carolyn Janzen at Rugged Law was severely disappointing…read more I retained Ms. Janzen for a family law matter and terminated the representation in less than 48 hours because I lost confidence in the representation I was receiving. One of my primary concerns was that my $14,000 retainer check was deposited before I ever signed an engagement agreement or fee agreement. That immediately raised concerns for me. After ending the representation, I was charged over $1,000 for what I believe amounted to approximately one meeting and photocopying of my documents. I disputed the charges, requested that the invoice be revised, and attempted to resolve the matter directly. I was unable to reach a resolution, so I filed a complaint and fee dispute with the Oregon State Bar. My understanding is that the firm chose not to participate in the fee dispute process. I also became uncomfortable with the repeated discussions about the firm's use of AI in legal work and ultimately decided this firm was not the right fit for me. I cannot recommend this firm based on my experience. I encourage anyone considering hiring Rugged Law to carefully review the fee agreement before paying a retainer, ask detailed questions about billing practices, and make sure they are completely comfortable with the representation before proceeding.

With no response still as of today and several attempts to call in to try and schedule with no return calls back I can see why prior reviews with the same experience are apparent. More so I continued to try to make a consultation appointment yet again this morning and spoke with the receptionist who let me know KYLE was the only one who could schedule the consultation and he was unavailable. It wasn't until informed the receptionist of my frustration and experience with no follow up from KYLE and I wanted to speak with his higher up that he was instantly available. He reassured me he had emailed me yesterday from our first initial conversation a week a go and deemed himself that should have sufficed in lieu of not returning any calls prior that week with my time sensitive issue. After I let him know of his poorly conducted attempt to contact me back he then let me know non of the attorney's were available or could take my case. His exact words were "no one is available until after the new year". I understand completely that the firm has many cases as they came highly recommended but as a smaller firm it should not take over a week to get a response from a schedule coordinator to let a possible future client that all the attorney's are unavailable until after New Years. Really?? After calling KYLE on his lack there of his demeanor completely changed and I asked to be re routed to the front desk. Instead of being professional he asked why and why did I need to talk to the receptionist. I let him know that I wasn't going to continue the conversation with him and would like to speak with the front desk. This is when he informed me that he was the Office Manager and anything that needed to be left with the front desk he could be made aware of. Interesting how if you a not even a client but a prospective and that's how you are treated then how actual clients are treated. All in all I believe this was a way letting me know to dodge this firm like a bullet.
