So I had the dreaded, anxiety producing, melt-down experience of the "Blue Screen" on my laptop this week. I wasn't sure where to go so I turned to the trusted Yelp community and thank goodness I did! I decided to go with The Computer Cellar for the win and was very pleased. While I was hoping for an easy fix, it wound up to be a bit more serious. BUT, Chloe and Gabriel are angels, they were so calm, genuine, and trustworthy that it made the process bearable (that and some wine! I'm not going to lie!). It was New Year's Eve and they didn't want me to have to wait until today to get my computer back so Gabriel saved the day and fixed the laptop before closing. Ok, so if you need ANY diagnostic help with your computer (in my case it was a pc) these guys are as far as I'm concerned the best. They remind me of two guys in their garage who don't much care about appearances but are tremendously knowledgeable. Wow this group is the best! Gabriel and the Computer Cellar team saved me hours of frustration. I brought them my high-end gaming PC that had been crashing to blue screen. I tried everything to fix it, including a full wipe and no luck. I was at my wits end. I'm embarrassed to admit that I don't remember the guy's names who helped me when my 2000's era MacBook Pro stopped restarting, but they were both very friendly and competent! One of them restarted my computer off a memory stick, and I gave him permission to erase everything on my computer, believing I had backed it all up through Time Machine. When I brought my portable hard drive that I believed had my backups on it, they discovered that I had been mistaken, and no backups existed! But again, the main guy was polite and friendly, and didn't make me feel stupid about it. I took my, now completely reset laptop from their shop feeling thankful, and grateful, that at least my computer was working again! read more

These good folks were completely up-front and pressure-free about options and cost, communicated updates on my repair via text, and to my surprise, had my laptop fixed within 24 hours and at a fraction of what it would have cost at an Apple store. They don't do appointments, so I just walked in, talked with somebody immediately, and we had it all figured out in a few minutes. They clearly run a tight ship. Last week, I took my laptop to this company on 9th street without an appointment and I was greeted quickly by a very knowlegeable technician who walked me through a number of options available for my almost 2 year old labtop which had a broken case and also had come loose from the hinges with all sorts of exposed wires. It really looked bad. Three house later my computer was fixed and now is much more solid. The technician discussed the issue with my super thin case and reinforced it for me. Hopefully I will be able to keep this laptop for a few more years. The price was reasonable; the repair was excellent. The whole experience was simply terrific. They have a customer for life! I've never needed to take my computer for a repair until now. This place is a lifesaver. For background, the manufacturer of my computer quoted a 7-10 business day diagnostic timeline with a high fee. I found this business online; called them and spoke to them without a wait time; they gave me an estimate of cost and timeline and what they suspected the computer issue was. I brought my computer to them and within four hours I had my computer back in my arms fixed and with a bill that I could swallow. They were SO nice and helpful. They're great with COVID precautions. They have a great turnaround time and cost estimates. I hope I never have computer issues again, but if I do, I plan to use this business. read more

My laptop was making a loud whirring noise and I went on "Nextdoor" to get recommendations for repairs. Several people recommended The Computer Cellar and so I took it there. Gabriel opened it up, diagnosed it as the fan, ordered the part and let me keep my laptop until the part arrived. I was out of there in 10 minutes. He called 2 days later to say that the part was in. I went back, he installed the part, deleted some malware and AVG (which I apparently never should have agreed to have installed because he says that my Microsoft has its own anti-virus already). I was again out of there in 10 minutes. A really pleasant person to deal with and TERRIFIC service! They will be my go-to for all things computer related from now on! read more

The Computer Cellar is a great starting point for any issues that may initially arise with your software or hardware. When you come in, you are quickly greeted by the staff who try their best to get to you as soon as they can. If you're unsure of what the problem is, the staff works hard to quickly diagnose the issue and offer possible solutions. What's arguably the best part about this is that they are completely candid when it comes to their ability to perform a job. I recently brought in a corrupted hard drive that needed recovery and after a few diagnostics, they were honest in that the likelihood of the issue being resolved in-house would be quite low, but were quick to offer next-best steps, specialty center information and discount, and further proactive measures to prevent any potential issues in the future with my hardware. I reached out to them both on the phone and in person and was met with the same high quality of service and respect. Long overdue review, but these guys are amazing. I had a MacBook failure just days before I was due to move across the country. Out of nowhere, flashing a trackpad and mouse on the screen, refusing to turn on. I talked to tech support at my company, who had no idea and recommended we do a full reset on the computer. I checked out Yelp and came here out of desperation, and couldn't have been happier. They quickly sorted out that the laptop was no longer recognizing the keyboard and trackpad, but that the computer worked perfectly if you just plugged external options in. They took the laptop apart and looked everything over, ended up deciding that it was likely to be a failure of the touchpad interconnect cable, though as I was at this point leaving the next day, I couldn't wait for it to arrive. They told me that Apple had never recognized this as a real MacBook issue and that they would likely recommend a large hardware replacement for hundreds of dollars. This small piece was, thankfully, super cheap. I couldn't wait for the part, but asked what I owed them for the diagnosis. Their response was that they'd learned something new, and hadn't been able to fully fix it for me. So they charged nothing, and sent me on my way with the part number so that I could get it repaired at my new location. Such nice people, took the time to clearly explain everything, were clearly not out to take advantage (the opposite!), and had nice and clear coronavirus procedures. An awesome resource in the Ninth Street neighborhood. Though I haven't used their computer repair service, I have twice taken advantage of their e-cycling program, getting broken monitors and computers, outdated printers, and even thermostats off my hands and out of my house. Computer Cellar picks apart the donated items for pieces that can be salvaged or repurposed, and has the rest picked up by Triangle Ecycling who then refurbishes or recycles the remains -- they have a zero landfill policy. Their hours can be a bit tricky if you work a 9-5, but they are open on Saturday and til 6:30 on Wednesday. Find them by entering the door in the Couch building, to the right of Market Street Coffee and heading downstairs, down a hallway on the left. The folks have always been very friendly, and very willing to accept my would-be trash. One hopes their electronics won't fritz out often, but if they do, I'll be back again! read more

There is such a feeling of vulnerability for me when my computer has a problem. I am a professor, researcher and statistician and my work relies on the computer. These guys really did the most to make a stressful situation less so. On Saturday, my laptop black screened while I was working on an important project. I called the computer cellar and asked if they could save some of my data. Gabe was able to diagnose the issue within 5 minutes (motherboard failure on a Dell XPS 13 i7 7th gen, a common problem with these models), and assured me the data was retrievable. I picked up my backup drive and they transferred the system files I needed - in total it took 30 minutes tops. The bummer part was I needed to purchase a new laptop ASAP, but Gabe made some helpful recommendations with what was in stock at local stores. I enjoyed talking with the other of the employees on a slow Saturday and I will definitely be returning with any future computer issues. Shout out to Gabe for saving my day! read more

In a summary, you can buy a new computer anywhere in the triangle area, but if you need to repair it, the only place I suggest you is The Computer Cellar. I rarely left a review for a service before. But this time, I must write a review for The Computer Cellar. Last night, my Macbook pro suddenly got black on the screen and could show anything. It is really a nightmare when you work on it everyday. Before I went there, I had an appointment with Apple's official repair center this morning. They asked much money for diagnostic and cannot repair it today. That's really unreasonable. I also went to other computer repair center, they just said I need to change the screen without careful checking and diagnostics. When I arrived at The Computer Cellar, Simon gave me a warm welcome and then Gabriel carefully checked my Macbook. He is really professional and within 10 minutes, he found the problem, which is a small problem and I don't need to replace my screen, which costs huge. Finally Gabriel repaired it well within another 10 minutes and returned me a well-working Macbook. They really makes me happy for the rest of the day since I can use it now and save much money. Trust me, they are all professional and will carefully check the problem of your computer and will give you the most reasonable price in the whole triangle area. I have nothing but praise for The Computer Cellar, and more specifically the owner Daryn. My husband recently had to move his dental practice to a new location. This was a huuuuuge project. The new space had to be wired for networked computers in each exam room and office, each exam room had to have new monitors attached to arms coming down out of the ceiling, the digital panoramic x-ray machine had to have special wiring, we needed a new control center where everything hooked into the office server, etc, etc, etc ... and Daryn handled it all. He came to the office early, he stayed late, he went above and beyond to make sure everything was done properly and in a timely manner. He got us signed up for an e-fax service (no more junk faxes wasting my ink and paper!) and helped us in our unnecessarily long and convoluted quest to cut ties with Frontier and get our phone / internet / cable tv through TWC ... and keep our old phone numbers! Daryn handled it all beautifully with a lot of know-how and humor. Again, I have nothing but praise for Daryn and his team. They absolutely deserve every five star rating! read more

I recently had a bad experience with the Computer Cellar when I brought my iMac in to get a new hard drive. They replaced the drive, but afterwards the fan would run at top speed all the time. I emailed a number of times about the issue but they simply stopped returning the email thread. Finally I took it to the apple store and they were able to figure out that the LCD proximity sensor got unplugged during the hard drive repair. They also told me that my computer, "was obviously not handled with care" and that a number of screws were stripped and the LCD screen was scratched. So, bad repair service was coupled with bad customer service. Not a good way to run a small business. Mac users - you might save yourself a few bucks by going here, but in the long run, it could cost you more. read more

Dropped an external hard drive, complete with un-backed-up photos of our honeymoon, and it quickly refused to show up, spun wildly, and threatened to ruin any memories we had of the trip.
