Imagine the joy of finding that one-of-a-kind art deco lamp that goes with your place so perfectly you couldn't have designed something so perfect: I'm going for a blue peacock art deco theme. Just think how hard. It is to get the stars to align for this. A gorgeous art deco, petite, ceramic, art deco lamp. The seller had great reviews, , I paid $396.00 for it to ship from the Netherlands. No big deal I thought, my dad can easily rewire it and put a nice long cord on it. I was practically giggly when it arrived but but that quickly changed. It arrived broken and missing its head. My giggles quickly turned to tears. I messaged the seller. She felt terrible, my poor little lamp probably got manhandled in customs and lost the head. The seller felt terrible, she actually refunded all my money including shipping. That was a lovely gesture. I was determined to get the head restored. As I do with all projects I need done I ask Yelp. As always, Yelp did not let me down. As I recall, Jason at The Conservation Lab didn't reply to my quote request, I tracked him down. One art restorer quoted me $1000.00. Jason quoted me $275.00. I said yes immediately. I had actually poked around on his website and was really impressed with the quality of his work. Quite frankly I was shocked that an artist of his caliber was only charging me $275.00 for such a difficult job as recreating a ceramic head for my peacock lamp. But I'm grateful that someone like him is making art restoration accessible to people like me. I gifted him with a charcoal drawing I did. It took him about a month. This job was no small task. He sent me photos of the finished product. I was thrilled. It looked gorgeous. My dad picked it up to rewire it from EU wiring is USA wiring. As the photos show, this Art Deco original Erté bronze double-sided vanity table mirror was damaged in shipping. I went in search of an art restorer and found the best possible person (and conservation lab) in Portland, Jason Jones. Repairing this multi-decade anticipated Erté piece was not easy. The replacement mirrors had to be precisely cut, polished and drilled to reset to the polycarbonate base as well as the polycarbonate vertical section to accommodate the 45° articulated bronze and mirror. This is a very heavy item. Jason was unflinching in his agreement to take in this piece and his confidence in restoring it to its original splendor was all I needed to know. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of working with Jason at the Conservation Lab. My favorite piece in particular is a full restoration of a 100+ year old Masonic Charter and custom frame. His meticulous hands were able to safely unroll it from the previous improper storage, and bring it back to its original shape. The gold leaf was repaired and staining was removed. Jason's ability to repair or restore artwork is in itself a work of art. He faced two steep challenges when I found him through a simple Google search, distraught that two beloved pieces of artwork that my 95-year-old father made were damaged when FedEx packed and shipped them from Boynton Beach, Fla., to my home in Portland, Ore. One was not only smoothing out cracks across a unique hybrid sculpture painting in honor of 9/11 encased in a lovely gold frame, but also reinforce the back of the piece. I didn't realize there was severe damage until he pointed it out. When he explained what it would entail, I was stunned to learn how weakened the link between plaster and plywood was and that it was a miracle it didn't fall to the ground years before while adorning my parents' foyer. The second task was also enormous, though in a different way. He had to reconstruct the head of a rotund man sporting a dark green blazer that my Dad warmly dubbed the "Bon Vivant." In attempting to describe what the face and head looked like, I referenced popular singer Robert Goulet as a creative marker. I was hoping the finished result would at least match the large body. Jason completely exceeded my expectations on both projects! He's truly gifted, and I would highly recommend that anyone who needs their artwork repaired or restored in some way hire him on the spot. read more

We have now used Jason for 3 western-style (seamless) porcelain repairs. His work has been so good that, when we pass the repaired pieces, we both always say "Wow, I can't believe he did such a great job!" Our first repair was a large statue of white porcelain Guanyin (Kanon in Japanese) which had broken fingers. After we met and I paid half up front (quite normal, the fee was less than many East coast shops), soon enough Jason wrote to tell me that the remaining fingers were poorly made replacements (my eyesight is bad, so...). So glad he caught that! Next, he sent us photos of a mockup of how new fingers would look. We saw some need for changes and sent him a drawing of what we felt would be right. For the end product, he made some minor adjustments from our design based on how the stubs of the existing fingers were angled, so as to keep as much consistency with the original look as possible. In the end, looking at the piece, it is perfect, absolutely stunning! Note that Jason uses hexatal in his porcelain repairs, which is great because this chemical fuses porcelain like new (or better), and has the refractive index of glass, so it does not show at all, even under a black light. Jason himself is a wonderful and jocular person and I really love working with him. He is tremendously flexible and shares our respect and honor for works of art that have lived and will now live well beyond us. We are so happy to have found someone local, so we don't have to ship to the East Coast, who does fantastic work! We are using him now for kintsugi on another piece, and even a bronze repair. Can't wait to see the results! One note, if you are not accustomed to working with artists and restorers, I would caution you to be patient. Good work takes time and is not easily estimated. As the work progresses, some things are easier, some harder than originally expected. I recently got a 6 week estimate on kintsugi being done in New York and didn't actually get the piece back until a year later! Jason did an outstanding job on the ceramic figure I brought in. The piece is a fiddler and this particular piece plays music. It was given to my wife from her grandfather, so it was very important to her. The music had never really worked when she received it. When she and I had moved to Salem, the piece had broken and that saddened my wife. I am a collector and dealer in fine antique oriental porcelains and ceramics. I presented Jason with 2 pieces of antique Japanese satsuma ware that were of very high quality. Each had a specific challenge - the coffee pot needed a chip repaired in the spout, and the trumpet vase had major discolorication (suspect they left flowers in too long which turned the water and subsequently the vase, black). The challenge with satsuma ware is that the surface has a fine crackling in the glaze that is characteristic, but random and hard to replicate. Jason did an excellent job mimicking the surrounding glaze characteristics with creative application of very tiny dots of color.....the overall apearance was perfect and he did a great job matching the irregular surface of the surrounding clay body. The discolored piece was very challenging to determine the right chemical solution that would cleanse the dark areas without affecting the glazes and gold overlay. He asked for a bit more time to get it right (not a problem - quality takes time) and the result was amazing. Prices were very reasonable and Jason was great to work with. Restoration is an art form in its own right. I will bring him more work and am relieved to find a great service to support my business needs. Highly recommend! read more

I bought a piece of old Japanese pottery with the kintsugi manner of repair for my husbands 70th birthday. It arrived from Japan in pieces, Jason Jones repaired it using the kintsugi manner of repair. His work made the piece even more special than it was. I couldn't find anyone else who could help me with this piece. Kintsugi uses gold solder to repair the broken pieces, it is quite intricate and symbolic for being strong in the broken places. Jason Jones was easy to do business with, but more importantly he is quite an artisan. read more

Jason repaired a decorative plate that had fallen off the wall and shattered into four pieces. It was complicated work, since the body of the plate was terra cotta, there was a blue baked glaze, and sand borders. He did a fantastic job. He clearly explained the work he would do and the areas where the glue and margins would be visible. You can hardly see the borders of the break unless you know exactly where to look. I had a great experience with Jason Jones of Jones Sculpture Studio, after doing lots of research and reading online reviews, I settled on hiring him. My girlfriend had a multi-colored ceramic sculpture she made in Art school, and was very sentimental to her. At some point it got dropped and was broken in half, and she kept it in a box for many years. I brought the pieces to Jason, and I was immediately impressed by his demeanor, knowledge of sculpture and art repair, as well as his immense studio space filled with repairs in progress and his original works (which are pretty amazing!). He quoted a fair price and had it repaired and ready to go in 3 days, just in time to put under the Christmas tree. Jason was able to put the sculpture pieces back together and color match, so well that you would never know it was ever broken.
