    Organ inside the classroom

I'm on the hunt for a new workout routine so I've been trying different workouts and studios around the city using Classpass. I've taken a reformer pilates class once before and wasn't a fan but that was years ago so I figured why not give it another go. This studio is conveniently located to me and they had plenty of class times. I came in early to get a refresher on the reformer machine. The instructor introduced herself and was friendly and welcoming. She taught a great class that was very challenging and worked out the whole body. I'm sore today but in a good way! As many other reviews have mentioned, the studio itself is converted from an old church - super cool! Loved that they kept the original organ and stained windows. The high ceilings make it feel airy and open even though it is an intimate setting with only 12 reformers. They had AC blasting and I appreciated the airflow because, despite the slow movements and low-impact workout design, I worked up a good sweat! There are plenty of lockers to store your belongings, a restroom, and 2 changing rooms for your convenience. If you're new, I recommend coming in early to get a rundown of the machine and also secure a good spot. Get one closest to the mirror (the front of the class) so that when you do moves facing the back, there are people to follow along. You can wear grippy socks or go barefoot.

The class wasn't as "inviting" as I'd hoped it would be, but I enjoyed the workout. This is my second time doing Pilates with Core40. The first time was about 3 years ago at the now closed Hayes Valley location. I took a Foundation class there (posted picture of my old review) and I enjoyed it and have wanted to get back into it every since. This time, I jumped right into it and just picked a class that fit with the time I wanted to work out. I invited two friends to join me and when we arrived we were greeted by the hostess at the top of the stairs. She was the sweetest and got us signed in right away. We found our machines, put our things away in the lockers and got ready for the class. Jackie was our instructor and she seemed a bit irritated that we were new. She sped through her introduction of the machine and how to work it and even apologized to the class, despite us arriving the 10 minutes early they requested for new people. Despite all of that, the class was amazing and I left feeling muscles I didn't know I had upon entering. She walked around and helped us adjust to ensure our form was correct, gave very clear instructions, and even gave in-the-moment demonstrations on the stage. I didn't like that she didn't check on us at the end of the class to see if we enjoyed it or would return or anything. I think she may have just been having a bad day, but it was not a good first impression and reintroduction into the company or workout. First class with Core40 is like 99 cent so there is no reason you shouldn't give it a try. They had grippy socks at the check in for sale for $7 (amazing price) if you need them. Thankfully Core40 gives you the opinion to use them or not. The fitness center is located in a former Church (it still has the organ piano is on the stage and the frosted glass windows) so if you have to curse to get through your workouts, you may want to pass. Lol. I'm very excited about getting into Pilates and want to try it weekly. The hostess recommended we try Paige's class (I think that's her name), but we don't live close to chance another unwelcoming experience. I'm going to try a different company before returning. Nevertheless, it was a great workout.

So excited that the 4th Core40 SF studio has opened up. This one is housed in a former church, and I love how they've kept a lot of the old church decor. The layout of the megaformers are well spaced and are just side by side in two rows here. Same great workout that we all know and love as the other studios. Parking can be hit or miss in the area. Welcome to Noe/Mission Core40! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for hopefully a future location in the Sunset area or Peninsula. Viva la lagree!

I tried out the Newbie unlimited pass, and was going about 3-4 times a week. What I love about this studio is that they seem to have instructors that are more invested with each of its clients. For instance, the instructors call out participants by name saying how great they are doing in a move. I also like how some instructors incorporate arm weights into the class, which look tiny, but are quite strenuous. My favorite instructors are Corri, Ina, Ariel, and Mara. After being here for a few months, I'd say 90% of the instructors are good, and you will get a good workout in. Some things I don't like about the studio are the booking options for the classes. By first glance, it looks impossible to book a class, as the options are almost always "waitlist only." I am pulled off the waitlist about 80% of the time, but not always. I always feel like in general, it's annoying to be put on a waitlist, instead of being confirmed right away. In addition, if I could change the membership options, what I would change is the options for classes per month. It skips from 8 classes/month to 12 classes/month, which is a big jump. Wish there was an option in between to choose from. Another bummer is the mirrors in the class. 80% of the reformer machines have mirrors on all sides, but there are a few spots that don't have many options, so it's hard to see yourself in the mirror to correct yourself. The parking is really easy in this area, which is amazing. Even in broad daylight, the residential parking a block down and over are free for 2-4 hours! Love that! In general, I really love this studio and would recommend if you want to try Reformer pilates.

I did 2 morning classes which worked out perfectly for my schedule and the parking outside (street cleaning so be aware of the days, also no meter paying until 9AM). The studio is very well setup, spacious and clean with good ventilation/ac. Reformers are staggered with lots of mirror around and motivational words up top (love that!). I appreciate the little baskets each reformer has for our personal items, such as smart way to keep out things in one place, next to us! Very high 4 stars rating, only things that brings it down is its soo pricey for a membership or per session... but that's a Pilates reformer class anywhere you go. Nevertheless, definitely worth the try and I just may be back every once in a while!

Pilates was suggested from my rheumatologist and my physical therapist. Started with some entry level group classes and found i loved them but also knew I need more 1 on 1 to ensure I was doing everything correctly for my EDS issues. Met Ramlah and now work with her 2-3 days per week when I am in the city. Only disappointing thing about this particular facility is they don't have a lot of formation classes, which are the ones you take in the beginning. Fortunately, I'm in a place where I am able to pay for privates, but I don't know if this is the place to come and learn in a group environment as they have so few classes. I found a couple of studios in my area that do offer them and will continue with privates but take some groups elsewhere that offer entry level classes the focus on form. ]

One change is that they have been sold to some sort of corporation. A few of the really good instructors left. Second they randomly started changing the classes. A few weeks ago I signed up for a reformer class that mysteriously got changed to a "power" class (much harder, maybe better for me but definitely not what I signed up for). This was the third or fourth time classes had been shifted without notifying the participants. The instructor said she just found out as well. Why? No idea. Also frustrating is that despite the fact I have come here for years there has never been any kind of thank you for your loyalty, hey it's your birthday here's a free class, here's a discount, nothing. It was a small studio that has now become a chain, so the vibe has shifted for sure. I wish them the best and thank them for all of the great classes I've had in the past but it's time to move on.

My only wish was that I had found this studio earlier when I lived just a block or two away, I would have been here all the time. I took Jen's class -- she's the owner -- and it's nice to find someone who is so nice, passionate and involved in her business. The space is small but has 5-6 reformers, some other equipment and one bathroom. Note that there's no separate changing area other than the one bathroom so if you're going to cut it close to the class, it may be best to change at home. The reformer class was excellent and was focus and controlled and I got a good workout in. Jen took the time to explain everything and made sure we were doing the moves correctly. Even though I didn't really sweat in the class, I did feel a little sore in my abs the next day and still got a god workout in. Would highly recommend this place if you like pilates classes like Body Chemistry in the Mission or Mercury Fitness in the Marina. These are the kinds of pilates studios I love to find and frequent. I don't really love the BodyRok or Core40 classes as much since they go too fast, seem very repetitive in the movements/exercises, and don't focus on form. These kind of classes are more of the opposite. 5 stars. Looking forward to taking another class here next time I'm back in San Francisco.
