I imagined these murder mystery dinners to be Sherlock Holmes-esque, dark and mysterious...but instead this was quite the opposite. We came here on a 80's theme 'Til death do us part' series and the setting was straight out of a cheesy, tacky 80's theme prom night and I loved every second of it. The actors are hilarious and quite talented as each would play more than one role. I laughed so much during the entire show. While I would have hated to be one of the chosen ones from the audience to participate in the show, it was really fun and funny to see audience participation. Everyone was a good sport about it and it made it that much more memorable. But, I'm so glad I was out of reach to be called upon. Service was great. Food was edible, but who's there for the food anyway. It was my birthday and they made sure to embarrass me by having everyone sing Happy Birthday to me. (thanks, guys - I hate you). The actors and actresses all put on a great show and allow you to take photos with them at the end. Overall, it was a really fun night and would definitely recommend it.

She turned 85 on May 1, and she stood there singing in high heels while playing guitar for an hour, and then for another 25 minutes she played piano. She sang and told stories and had us sing along a cappella on a few of the songs. She made us all laugh with her jokes and gave us background on several of the songs she sang, especially the ones she wrote. She was amazing, as was the magnificent theater.

Having never been there before, I did not know what to expect. When we arrived early and the small door to the theatre had not yet opened I almost wondered if were we in the correct place. Within 10 minutes a lot of people arrived and the audience filled most of the small but very professional theatre space. I could not have been more impressed. The only reason I gave it 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the parking situation which is a little challenging, especially when the Padres are in town. We happened to park in a paid lot which was a bit sketchy late at night.

It was clear that the whole thing was improvised and zero preparation or effort went into it. There was no set. The puppet kept saying "uhhh what should we do?" And then they would dance. Then "uhhh what about now?" Then dance again. Then they said they were going to tell a story about two con-men on the run and they just ran in front of a looping gif for 10 minutes saying "to the left, to the right, to the left, to the right." No story. The real con-men are the people who charged for this embarrassment.

We sat with a group of High Tech High students from North County and I felt so sorry for them. The play was about half in Spanish and while my group of students laughed during those parts, on the other side of the theater....crickets....LOL! I understood some, not all, because they spoke pretty fast. Luckily one of my students would nudge me to join in, which I guess is cheating. This performance was at the 10th Ave Theater, which I like very much as far as seating and AC. The play was wonderful and something most of my students could relate too. Which is why I really love this theater group. The plays are culturally relevant and what I look out for, for my students. Recently, we watched an adaptation of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. I had to read this novel four times while at SDSU. Each time, I found something new in the novel and when I heard that Mo'olelo and Moxie Theater were collaborating on it, I definitely needed to see it. I first saw a read through and then we attended a matinee, again with HTH...LOL! The set was amazing! All the actors were great! And to see the characters come to life was truly a literati treat! I enjoyed it so much, I went to see it again with friends. Every performance was sold out. i do recommend buying tickets online and then arriving about 5-10 minutes before show time. It's open seating, but they ask people to move in, so we were able to sit at the ends of the aisles. My only complaint was the couple that was sitting next to me. Did they not understand black humor? Or were they afraid to laugh because the story addressed race and social class. I just couldn't understand why they didn't laugh at the very funny scenes. Other than that odd white couple (LOL), it was great to watch. I can't wait to see what they have in store for their season next year!

I felt like I was in New York or something enjoying an off Broadway show. I can't explain it. The show was thought provoking and wow, just amazing. I highly recommend checking this play out. There was true passion and talent here, you can just feel it. Its official, San Diego now has talent. I am excited at knowing I can enjoy my own awesome city instead of traveling away. I…read moredid just that this weekend, first attending the opera #Carmen on Friday night, then attended this play last night. I was intrigued by the synopsis because it mentioned taking place on 9/11, but the storyline goes well beyond that fateful day. The Mercy Seat. First, the theater: a small, intimate area with only 3 rows of seats. I've always enjoyed smaller theaters as you get ThisClose to the actors. Next, the play itself - clearly a unique display of two actors taking us on a roller coaster of emotions through their relationship. Having recently come out of a 6-year tie myself, I was able to relate to both characters and became submerged with the plot. At the end of the show, there is a small gathering area where the actors meet and talk with audience members. I shook hands with Aleks and listened intently how he explained to a small group of women how he mentally prepared for the character of Ben - stating several times how he was an a-hole and had to continuously remind himself of that. As I listened to him, I sensed that male-bashing bias that I've come to hear all too often. It's true that the character of Ben had been in a 3-year relationship with this woman while his wife and children are home. But the woman he is having an affair with is just as guilty. She made the conscientious decision to get involved with a married man who has children. She may be coming to the realization that she wants more, but Ben is not at fault for this. Furthermore, we hear Ben talk about his kids at several points throughout the storyline. So while his mistress (and boss) apparently fulfills certain destinations for Ben within the bedroom, he still loves his kids. I can relate to Ben. I was in a miserable marriage for years but didn't have the spine to leave them because I love my two boys. So from my perspective, Aleks doesn't give Ben enough credit. It takes two to tango, and Ben clearly has more to lose than his mistress. With that said, I would like to congratulate both Aleks and Ray-Anna Ranae on an absolutely brilliant performance. They are wonderful and thought provoking. Exceptional acting and directing. It's an up close and personal experience every time. I love the sets! We also love having several restaurants within walking distance where we can have dinner before the show. It makes for the perfect date night or night out with friends.
