I visited not to long ago, a few weeks, I searched all over for an oddities shop, and came across this one, after deciding to buy a way over priced raccoon skull (60$) I asked them to wrap it, they did and I brought it home. The next morning I opened the tissue paper and multiple beetles (see photo) came out of the skull, I brought it outside and found multiple of those black little bugs crawling in it. I then realized that there was still a significant amount of tissue inside the skull. I had to soak it in degreaser, and then after I took it out of that, I noticed the jaw bone was cracked in half, and I just assumed I had broken it. Well today, I pulled it out of the peroxide it was soaking in, and to my surprise there was hot glue left over on one side of the jaw bone and a small amount on the other, so not only did I buy a beetle infested over priced skull, but I was sold a broken one that I was told was "in one piece" I did reach out over Instagram, just saying that they should check there other things. And I got no reply. I wasn't going to write a review until today when I saw the glue. Please don't purchase things from this shop. read more

Absolutely beautiful shop in the heart of Salem. Loads of herbs and extremely well priced gems, even a section for bones! What I really like is that everything is simple, not gimmicky at all like many of the other shops. Truly a little haven. The only thing I didn't like was how rude the older woman was, she treated me as if I was another nuisance tourist, despite actually living in the city. She took about 10 minutes to check out the girl in front of me who certainly "looked" the part of living in Salem. The younger worker was an absolute doll though! read more

This is my absolute favorite store in salem and possibly the whole world. I can't recommend it enough. I always say it's the most authentic shop in town, because it really is. The family that runs it is so sweet and you can tell their heart is in the business. I actually love that you can't use your phone in there- you get to appreciate everything without hearing anyone loudly talking in the phone.... or any distractions in general. they have some of the coolest stuff there- amazing sage as always, but you'll find random things like a chicken leg holding an amethyst (which i of course purchased) the store is super tiny but you could spend hours inside of it. if you want to spend money on a keepsake to remember your time in Salem spend it here!! Not to mention that they have the best prices on crystals in town! $1 each whereas the village silversmith charges upwards of $5 for the same size. I liked their products. They had a nice collection of spells and dried flowers, a tarot reader (who wasn't there when I went today, but I've seen them there before) and a few crystals and books. It's quite authentic and they don't allow photos which is cool. It's the kind of place you want to photograph so it's frustrating but entirely understandable. The real reason I'm docking points is attitude. Rude rude rude. Everytime I've been in there they are all attitude. Won't help me and this time didn't have what I was looking for (flash paper for spells and moon ceremonies). The woman didn't even look up once and I addressed her to ask a question and she mumbled an answer. After my third time there(today) I don't think I'll be back anytime soon. read more

I love this place in person you guys, and I love ordering online. We stop there every time we are in MA to drop off and pick up our college student, and I am in need of some assistance with good fortune, so I ordered items last week. They arrived very quickly, so carefully packed, and were even better than I expected. The lovely shop owners even included a beautiful little gift for ordering. There have been a lot of new businesses on Essex Street recently, but The Coven's Cottage is my next favorite new place to go to. When you've lived in Salem for four years, it's really hard to find anything unique and interesting. The family of witches who own Coven's Cottage have actually brought new life to a street that can quickly become wall paper for locals. I have no doubt they will stand the test of time. The major selling point for me is their stones. If you're looking for stones, like Adventurine and Quartz, then go no further because they have a vast selection for a dollar a piece. Because of this, I will definitely be seeking out the Coven's Cottage when I'm crafting new magick bags and bottles. read more

Nice place with a lot of goods for a true practitioner, and help for the beginner. The employee roaming the store was very overzealous in stating there was no cell phone usage to my son, which I totally get in October when I'm normally there. Definitely a cool store, but I think that they smelled that I was an atheist because no one offered to help me. Meanwhile, the couple shopping for rabbit pelts and talking about charms got loads of help. I loved that they had lots of herbs and hanging flowers though I think what I planned to use them for and what they were intended for may have not been the same thing. I would have hung the dried peonies near my bed because they were pretty, and not realizing that they were meant to attract ghosts (hypothetical, of course.) Also, I wanted to get my first psychic reading here because it looked the least kitchy of all the stores in Salem offering it, but apparently people aren't in the market for a psychic reading at 11am on a Sunday because no one was there to do it. Went there for the first time several years ago with a friend of mine. I was going through a fresh break up and was probably very obviously in emotional distress. The lady working at the time (I'm assuming the owner?) asked me if I was okay and my friend mentioned to her that I was having issues with love. This woman without a second hesitation walks away, grab something from another little area, and hands me a huge rose quartz. I'm not talking a little stone, it was a BIG chonk of a thing! She then tells me this will help me, and gives me the biggest smile. I'm pretty sure she told me how she may have gone through similar heartbreak a while back but she was very happy now (she was married and pregnant!). I still have that rose quartz, and since that day I have returned several times only to be met with the same kindness and generosity with every single employee there. This is my favorite store anywhere in the entire world. If you are looking for an authentic witch shop and not a gimmicky store, this is where you ought to go. It is a small store, but filled to the brim with everything a witch needs. Altar items, herbs, teas, dried flowers, poppets, books, oils and more. They are priced reasonably and the staff is very knowledgeable. Be prepared for a wait because there is limited space and they can only fit a certain amount of folks in the store at a time. This is one of my favorite places in Salem. I visited last year around this time and fell in love and have ordered online in between my latest visit to Salem last week. Both times I have been in there typically during the weekday hours and it's so nice to just be able to walk around in circles at look at everything. There is A LOT to look at and admire. The place is filled top to bottom with all the items a witchy heart could desire. Aesthetically it's beautiful and truly a sight to take in. Definitely leans toward Norse mythology. The ultra Earthy Pagan inspired vibes are palpable. You do feel like you've walked into a healers apothecary/cottage. And that is absolutely a design talent to have much respect for so I understand the no photo policy, especially with all the artwork and attention to detail in there. Although I have to admit it's bittersweet not being able to take a picture because it's so beautiful! As far as customer service goes, I personally don't like a ton of attention when I'm shopping. A simple hello will do it for me. And so here I found that I wasn't hounded left and right being asked if I needed help nor did I feel pressure to get in and out quickly. I found the staff and I'm assuming the owners kind when I did interact with them at check out. The second time we came in last week (I bought little gifts for friends that I can't wait to give!) the gentleman at the counter did ask us if we were local and chitchatted a bit with us. We aren't local so I told him I've ordered online in between my visits and he thanked me for that. I know what it's like to work in a tourist town in a very unique boutique situation so I'm aware how hectic and energetic things can be in a small place like that with mostly transient customers and how frustrating that can be as a business owner. But what I found as a customer, The thing that's lovely about being as niched as they are, typically the tourists that love it and get it stay, and the ones that don't are quickly out which means it returns quickly to a place you are free to move about and check out what you'd like. They have done such a beautiful job of creating an experience for everyone who steps inside which is not easy to do. The products (herbs, crystals, candles) are lovely and good quality. The books are unique and specific. The bones and pelts they carry are also lovely. The engraved bones are well done. The jewelry is very pretty and well crafted (my boyfriend purchased a Rune necklace that was awesome!) The dried herbs that hang from the ceiling smell and look lovely. The art they carry is so intricate it's amazing. The divination tools and altar adornments are equally as excellent. I truly love this shop. It's one of those places that leave an impression on you and like I said that's a hard thing to do so I'm appreciate the hard work that must take! The prices are pretty reasonable too. I think I spent almost $100 this past week there and left with several bags of herbs, several votive candles, a bison horn, a abalone shell, crystals, and parchment paper rolls. Which I find just great for me and I'm glad to support an excellent small business like this Overall I find this shop to be well worth a visit (or a few) if you're in Salem and want something authentic instead of the same regurgitated tourist traps. Stroll around, take in the intoxicating blend of smells from their incense and their candles, and then get ready for a reading with Demetrius. And I do mean get ready. I would think that most of my readers may be on the skeptical side when it comes to psychic readings, tarot cards, or mediums. Good. Bring that skepticism with you and then prepare for an awe-inspiring experience. This wonderful location of course still gets 5 stars from me - but I just wanted to provide a note to the owners after my most recent visit in November 2015. I brought my boyfriend in with me, sincerely excited to show him this beautiful store and thankful to be in after the crazy October tourist season, and I was so disappointed and disheartened by the rude and dismissive nature of the woman at the counter. The gentleman owner and his son who helped me during my first visit were not present when I came back, but were incredibly kind and welcoming and knowledgeable. I did not feel welcomed at all when I came back to visit and felt like I was not wanted there - another one of the "crazy tourists". I was really bummed after being so excited to share this wonderful shop with someone else. It also made me worried about purchasing from the store. I do hope this can be remedied, and do hope it was perhaps just a bad time. I didn't want to comment until I saw the other reviews mentioning the same, and do want the wonderful family that works here to know that your loyal customers love love LOVE your shop and want to help your business and work succeed in any way we can! :) read more

This was by far the best shop we stopped into. It was just gorgeous and had TONS of stuff. It reminded me of a wise womans cottage essentially. Herbs and flowers in bunches hung upside down, drying from the ceiling. You walk in and in the middle is a huge table with all kinds of herbs in packets as well as tied dry herbs. I found sooo many things that the other shops didnt have. I found alot of great books. Books are a HUGE thing for me. I love me a good book and there were sections for any of your religious preference. We liked the druid, celtic, and viking sections. Not to mention the herb/gardening books. I have been visiting Salem since I was 20 years old, 30 years of seeing all that Salem has to offer. I don't know how exactly to explain Coven's Cottage and do it justice, but I will do my best to put into words how I feel every time I visit. Walking through the door can best be explained as stepping into nature and in a way, stepping back in time. It's a feeling of peace, power and something mysterious. It is a wonderful "old world" shop that truly captures the vibe of all that is Salem, in my opinion. Coven's Cottage is a family owned and run store. You can see that they put their heart and soul into everything about and in the place. They are wonderful people that truly live the life. There is only one thing negative that I can say about the store, it's that I spend entirely too much money every time I enter it because there are so many awesome things to buy :-). read more

It was my first time in Salem and we went into a couple stores because I thought it would be fun to see a psychic/tarot card reader. Well, most of the places were cheesy looking but the Coven's Cottage looked more authentic. It was $35 for a 15 min reading so my boyfriend and I each had a reading by Demetrius. I won't get into details about the reading but he was amazing! I plan on going back to ask him if he does parties.
