Any direction you drive to Pittsboro from you cross beautiful country side, forests, hills and rivers, and coming from the East, (Apex, Cary, Holly Springs, Fuquay Varina), you're in real luck, you get to cross over Jordan Lake twice. Pittsboro retains its small town USA feel, and the Joyful Jewel is just across the street from the historic Chatham County Courthouse which houses a historical museum open 2 - 3 times a week. But the Joyful Jewel is open 7 days a week. I have visited hundreds of times over the 12 years I have been living in central North Carolina because I so enjoy walking about the store, as if it were a museum, and taking in the colors, imagination, creativity and inspiration. Artists take turns in the store, so you get to meet an artist whose work is there. Mariah Wheeler is the owner, with her husband DG Chandler. Both are jewelers, but work in other forms as well. The affordability of art and fine crafts is one of the best discoveries for me, making a visit to the Joyful Jewel even better than a museum, since I may be able to take home the piece of art that really speaks to me. And if you're looking to learn more about local artists, Mariah is very well connected, not only to artist who paint, and potters, and glass artists, but also local writers, poets and musicians. It is locally owned and was founded in 1968, when Sid and Pat Oakley converted a former tobacco field into the site. It started small with one building and has since grown over time to many more. Two studios are used for glassblowing, and five studios are for pottery, including a kiln. The gallery is 4,000 Square feet, so there is a lot to see! When you come here, you will pick up on the creative vibe and community that develops as artists support each other. The location is pretty great too as you are away from the hustle and bustle and can just relax in nature whether you are strolling through the garden or just walking to the front door of the gallery. Sometimes when you visit, you can watch the artists work as they create their masterpieces of pottery or glass. The studios allow the public to watch at a safe distance. I like the variety of genres here, as you will find glass, wood, pottery, metal, jewelry, felt and more. Many events and festivals happen throughout the year. The National Tea Pot Show is currently going on through the summer, and it happens once every three years, so it is worth checking out. Pottery and Glass Festivals happen at other times of the year. The Cupful Exhibit is another favorite, featuring creatively designed homemade mugs. The Glass Egg Festival is unique in that the 55 blown-glass, unique eggs are auctioned each year for charity. The employees are always friendly when I've been here to browse or shop, and they help you find what you are looking for. They have a rewards program where, after you spend a certain amount, you get a discount and 20% off an item in your birthday month. The older woman BURST out of the back room and started LOUDLY telling everyone in the shop that she had been in a meeting and started asking people how she could help them. She took over helping me and talked super fast and really loud and kept telling me it would take a long time to restring the bracelet and she acted like I was a huge inconvenience. I kept saying not to worry about it and I would look around the shop some more. She would not allow that. She was beyond worried about it. She was so abrasive. She kept commanding the young guy to go in the back room and look for some special bowl of beads. He went back twice but could not find what she was asking for. He looked terrified to tell her that he could not find her special bowl. Why didn't she just go get it herself? Why would she not allow me to look around the store? Why is she so loud and abrasive? She finally went to the back room to search for her special bowl and my friends and I bolted out of the store so fast. When we were passing through the threshold of the door to outside I could hear the woman YELLING from the back room for us not to leave!!
