Their weekly menu changes, so it's best to ask for a recommendation. For some pocket change (about $4), I was able to get a chorizo and a crab empanada. Perfect hangover food, and there's a bench by the deli on the corner for you to loiter around and eat deliciously unhealthy fried wares.

This weekend, after a long walk around Brooklyn, I ventured back into my neighborhood (Carroll…read moreGardens) feeling in need of refreshment. I was craving a fresh watermelon juice from the Red Hook food trucks. Alas, it was too late; they were already closed. Besides, I was hoping for something closer to Smith Street where I found myself wandering. Then, I remembered the empanada lady! I only had to walk two more blocks before I was marveling at the items on her chalkboard. I ended up purchasing a homemade lemonade and ceviche for a grand total of $4(!). Both were served up quickly and with a smile. The lemonade hit the spot, especially since it was not too sweet like most lemonades tend to be. It also seemed to be mixed with some lime and, perhaps, mint. I felt like I was drinking a cocktail; I swear there was rum in it ;) The ceviche was also like a cocktail of sorts, served in a clear cup with a cocktail umbrella and garnished with plantain-encrusted calamari. The fruit, veggies, and seafood were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly blended. I wish I could tell you more about the components of this delightful meal, but I scarfed it down too quickly. Anyway, the empanada lady never disappoints. I have gotten her empanadas, pork dishes, and tamales and have always been satisfied. Soon, I hope to try her stuffed avocado. I particularly recommend visiting her stand after a long day of stoop sale shopping, when you have just a few stray dollars floating around in your wallet. That's all you will need!
